Descriptive info: 3/15/2012.. AEM urges Congressional action on Russian trade.. With Russia joining the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the coming months, Congress must act by granting Russia Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) in order for U.. workers and businesses to benefit from Russia s agreement to lower overall tariff rates, enhance intellectual property enforcement and diminish technical barriers to trade.. If Congress does not grant Russian PNTR in the coming months, U.. equipment manufacturers will be at a significant economic disadvantage in the Russian marketplace, stated the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM).. With critical transportation infrastructure and a vast agricultural sector in need of modernization, Russia will remain a vital market for agricultural and construction equipment, noted AEM.. As background, upon Russia s entry into the WTO, all member states will economically benefit by having most-favored-nation (MFN) status with Russia.. except.. , that is, the United States, unless Congress repeals the outdated and no longer applicable 1974 Jackson-Vanik amendment, which prevents the U.. from granting Russia Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR).. • Title: AEM | Newsroom - News Releases -- AEM op-ed piece pushes "Good Roads Are Good for the Economy" message to North Carolina
Descriptive info: AEM op-ed piece pushes "Good Roads Are Good for the Economy" message to North Carolina.. TIming coincides with World of Asphalt and AGG1 shows in Charlotte.. As part of AEM's grassroots advocacy, an AEM op-ed piece appears in the "Charlotte Observer" newspaper calling attention to North Carolina's infrastructure needs; it coincides with the current run in Charlotte of the World of Asphalt and AGG1 shows.. The op-ed, by AEM President Dennis Slater, appeared in the March 15, 2012 print edition and.. online.. Here is the op-ed piece:.. This week in Charlotte the people who design, engineer, and construct roads and other infrastructure all across the country are here for the World of Asphalt Show Conference and AGG1 Aggregates Forum Expo, While these events might not attract the same media attention and secret service protection as that other national gathering coming to Charlotte this summer, the asphalt and aggregates industries represented have an enormous impact on our daily lives.. Consider that almost everyone reading this paper will start up their car at some point today and hit the road to go somewhere: to school, to drop the kids off at soccer practice, to deliver products and of course to get to work on time.. Whatever has you on the move, it s a solid road network that allows you to get there quickly and safely.. But with our rapid national growth and ever-shifting national priorities, we are falling dangerously behind in our efforts to maintain and modernize our transportation infrastructure.. North Carolina s prime position on the eastern seaboard has long been touted as a selling point to attract new business and new residents, but now even forward-looking states like this one are seeing cracks in the economic highway.. Twenty-six percent of North Carolina s major roads are rated in poor or mediocre condition, costing every citizen, on average, an extra $241 in gas and repairs every year.. Focus on safety, and the  ...   investment, our competitors in Europe, China, India and South America are betting on their futures, investing decisively to build ports and modernize their roads and bridges to support their growing economies.. And it s not to promote tourism; it s so ships can bring parts to their shores, and trucks and rail cars can quickly move those parts to their factories, where their workers can assemble the products Americans and others want to buy.. Only by investing in the repair and modernization of our national transportation infrastructure can we hope to keep pace with those who are systematically working to claim the jobs Americans need so badly and can do so well.. Even in these lean times, all states owe it to their people to prioritize and invest in local road projects that allow commuters to move to work quickly and keep commerce flowing.. Our federal government should do the same.. Congress must pass the long-overdue highway bill so businesses in Charlotte and across the U.. can make long-term plans about shipping routes and how and where to expand.. Consider that North Carolina moves 364 billion dollars in products every year and 86 percent of those products are moved along the state s highways.. And the growing gridlock of red tail lights? That s because vehicle travel in North Carolina is up 105 percent in the last 20 years alone.. Most North Carolinians have watched an amazing evolution in their lifetimes.. They ve seen over the last 30 years how Southern cities have grown and emerged as economic powerhouses based not solely on agriculture but on commerce, banking and manufacturing.. We can keep that business momentum going and also help jumpstart the national economy by rebuilding and modernizing America s roads and highways.. The men and women at the Charlotte Convention Center this week know that.. When that other convention comes to town this summer, you might want to tell them that, too..

AEM and its more than 870 member companies, their tens of thousands of employees, and the national grassroots I Make America campaign thank the U.. Senate for working together in a bipartisan way to pass this critical two-year reauthorization of the highway bill.. Passed by a resounding bipartisan vote of 74 to 22, S.. 1813 reforms the way highway programs  ...   chair of the Environment and Public Works Committee, and Sen.. James Inhofe, the committee s ranking Republican, for their persistence, dedication and commitment to the spirit of bipartisan cooperation that has resulted in this well-crafted legislation.. There is no single piece of legislation pending before Congress that will do more to immediately create American jobs and sharpen our global competitiveness.. Now that the Senate has acted so decisively and by such a wide bipartisan margin, the finish line is in sight, and AEM calls on the House to move immediately to the highway bill when it returns to session next week..
