Descriptive info: by Joe Weidner | July 11, 2013.. Keith Lander, chairman of the AFSCME chapter of Local 101 (Council 8) representing full-time employees of the Stillwater Center, speaks against state and federal budget cuts at a recent press conference.. (Photo by Joe Weidner, AFSCME Council 8).. Keith Lander knows first-hand about the human toll of state budget cuts in Ohio.. A maintenance/custodial employee at Dayton s.. Stillwater Center.. , a home for mentally and physically disabled children and adults, he worried that Gov.. John Kasich s budget creates too much uncertainty for the families of those who have loved ones at the center.. More than worry, Lander spoke up about his concerns at a recent press conference conducted by.. Lander, chairman of the AFSCME Local 101 (.. The 24-year employee explained that Kasich s proposed budget (.. which has since been approved.. ), and the.. federal sequester.. , would harm Ohioans, especially those who are cared for at the Stillwater Center, which Montgomery County owns and operates.. It is currently licensed to provide residential services to 98 individuals.. • Title: AFSCME | Pennsylvania Supreme Court Denies Mayor Nutter’s Request to Impose Contract Terms
Descriptive info: by Pablo Ros | June 11, 2013.. Back in February.. , Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter went full Scott Walker when he tried to take away city employees collective bargaining rights by asking the state Supreme Court to impose his terms of a contract.. It was a dirty trick borrowed from the playbook of Wisconsin s anti-worker governor, but one that has come to be expected from Philadelphia s Mayor 1 Percent.. But.. last week.. , the highest court in Pennsylvania blocked Nutter s plan.. By an overwhelming majority, the judges denied Nutter s request to fast-track his case, which would let him impose contract terms on blue-collar city employees who are members of.. AFSCME  ...   This is a victory for.. all public employees in Pennsylvania.. , whose collective bargaining rights have been reaffirmed.. It means public employees have a voice at the table and the right to decide on the terms of their contracts, and that right cannot be arbitrarily taken away.. It s now up to Mayor Nutter to sit down at the table with city employees and bargain in good faith.. If he wishes to learn anything from this experience, it should be that pursuing the case through the courts will get him nowhere he needs to go back to the bargaining table.. Descriptive info: by Pablo Ros | June 05, 2013.. The U.. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit on Friday.. ruled in favor of 2,800 Connecticut state employees.. , 700 of whom are AFSCME members, who were illegally fired in 2003 based on their union membership.. In late 2002, former Connecticut Gov.. John G.. Rowland and his budget director, Marc Ryan, asked a coalition of state workers, including the AFSCME members, to make $450 million in long-term concessions under existing collective bargaining agreements.. They targeted unionized employees only and threatened to fire many of them should they refuse to meet their demands.. The unions made an alternative proposal and bargained in good faith.. And we stood by our members.. But the Rowland administration fired 2,800 unionized employees.. The workers were targeted because of  ...   they agreed to proposed concessions.. This illegal and immoral act disrupted thousands of lives.. AFSCME fought hard for 10 years.. on behalf of our members, and we re elated about the U.. Court of Appeals decision, which is an unequivocal defense of union members constitutional rights, said Salvatore Luciano, executive director of Council 4, also an AFSCME International vice president.. We urge that fair compensation be given to the Connecticut employees who were illegally fired.. Now a U.. • Title: AFSCME | California Budget Cuts Leave Court System Decimated
Descriptive info: by Pablo Ros | May 24, 2013.. California s budget crisis has decimated its court system in the last several years.. Cuts of more than 30 percent have left courts across the state and particularly in Los Angeles County.. understaffed and unable to meet the legal needs of citizens.. With more cuts proposed by Gov.. Jerry Brown, court employees and residents are voicing concerns that the wheels of justice may be grinding to a halt.. Judicial services have been cut to the bone, said Sharis Peters, a family law mediator in Los Angeles Superior Court and member of AFSCME Local 276 who spoke recently at a town hall meeting to demand that Governor Brown restore funding to the court system.. Residents are being forced to wait much longer to have their issues resolved in court.. A father who files for help in a custody matter may have to wait six months or more before he has an initial court hearing.. Gwendolyn Jones, a Los Angeles Superior Court Clerk and president of.. AFSCME Local 575.. , warned that  ...   Chief Justice, Tani Cantil-Sakauye, also protested the cuts, saying courts are unable to provide fundamental services or protect the rights of Californians, and that, By marginalizing the courts, California strikes a blow against justice.. Yet despite the dire circumstances, the state s courts this year are asked to trim another $350 million from their budgets, making it practically impossible to offer fair and timely justice to citizens on cases that will affect everyone.. In fact, further layoffs will mean more than half of civil courtrooms will be shut down permanently; civil cases such as divorce proceedings and lawsuits will take more than four years to wrap up; and delays in hearings will mean children in foster care will be left separated from parents for longer periods of time.. These are just some of the awful consequences.. That s why AFSCME stands with our sisters and brothers in California to demand an end to cuts and layoffs in the court system..
