  • Title: Alumni Placement - Master in Finance - Barcelona GSE
Descriptive info: » Alumni Outlook.. The Finance Program provided me with strong theoretical foundations on which to base my PhD research.. The program benefits from excellent links with renowned institutions and frequent visits by distinguished financial researchers.. Benjamin Golez 06.. PhD Student.. UPF (GPEFM).. Alumni Outlook.. Class of 2013.. Manuel Litz.. Business Analyst.. BearingPoint Finance/Risk/Compliance.. (Vienna).. After the theoretical training at Barcelona GSE I chose to take on a more practical approach to Finance.. Working as a Business Analyst for BearingPoint, I have already gotten valuable hands-on experience on various projects.. Everyday day is different from the last, but this is part of the management consulting business.. The diverse tasks range from PMO activities to analyzing and structuring deliverables for which I am in the lead, conducting workshops and communicating with the client s management.. An efficient and sound communication is key to most activities.. Currently, a lot of projects deal with regulatory reporting and regulatory changes (e.. g.. EBA frameworks) within the financial services industry.. I have requested to take on more risk projects in the next months (for example looking at liquidity risk which I researched and wrote on for the Barcelona GSE Master Project together with our Master Project team).. Moreover, I will participate in the practice development for operational risk.. This is an exciting and enriching environment with a lot of growth potential and I have learned a lot so far till this day.. For my daily work, I found the Risk Management, Financial Econometrics as well as the FIM Systemic Risk courses the most useful and enriching.. Moreover, I think that the workload and rigorous analytical training experience at Barcelona GSE prepared me well to take on any endeavor in my future.. Class of 2012.. Luiz Octavio Casarin.. Senior Financial Analyst.. LLX Logística S.. A.. (Rio de Janeiro).. LLX is a pre-operational logistics company that is currently developing the Açu Superport, the largest port infrastructure investment in the Americas.. My main responsibilities are related to ensuring the creation of value for the company.. I have been performing the financial valuation of projects that will be installed at the port.. I have developed a risk assessment model for our valuations and business plan.. I can say I have been applying on a daily basis the corporate finance theory I learned at the Barcelona GSE.. I have been facing problems in the real world that are similar to the ones we discussed in class and problem sets.. Discussions like the advantages and disadvantages of contracting debt, the minimization of the tax burden or finding an optimal capital structure have appeared in my work environment.. Furthermore, recently a new partner announced an increase of capital to LLX and the concepts of mergers and acquisitions and take overs have emerged.. In general I sometimes can picture myself discussing with my peers at LLX in the same way I discussed with my friends at the library trying to solve problem sets.. The technique of making the students find out the solutions discussing in small groups seems to be very adequate to simulate what I found in my work environment.. The year at Barcelona GSE was very intense and required hard work, but looking back it feels like it was all worth it.. Wischiro Keo.. Zurich Cantonal Bank.. (Zurich).. The most practical classes for my work with almost direct application are all classes which emphasized programming and scripting in statistical packages and the use of Excel (namely: Statistics and Econometrics, Continuous-Time Finance, Empirical Finance and Financial Risk Forecasting).. The programming concepts I learned with STATA or MATLAB have given me an edge in learning to use other tools in a timely manner.. To be honest, before the year at Barcelona GSE, I couldn t have done my current job that efficiently!.. Eye on Alumni Feature.. Ariadna Vidal.. Trainee.. European Central Bank.. After graduating from the Barcelona GSE, I started a traineeship in the ECB s International and European Relations Division.. The majority of the time I am working on a paper about global bond issuances which will be submitted to the ECB s Working Paper Series, but I also often receive other requests for internal notes and reports which involve coding and analysing data.. The Master degree in Finance at Barcelona GSE gave me the theoretical and analytical background for doing research work.. Class of 2011.. Miroslav Josic.. Economist / Analyst.. Croatian National Bank.. (Zagreb).. In my daily work at the Croatian National Bank, I am using skills from many of the Finance master courses.. First of all, Econometrics and Statistics, which, although it was intensive on many occasions, now, I am so grateful for it, especially Time Series.. Of  ...   I m currently working for Statoil ASA as part of their Corporate Graduate Programme.. It s a three year rotational program where I get to work in different business units in Norway or outside Norway.. After the fourth year, I choose which business area or unit I like, depending on my interests and career path.. For my first rotation, I am currently based at the head office in Stavanger, Norway under the Natural Gas - Strategy and Anaylsis - Economic Analysis business unit where we handle different projects related to natural gas all over Europe.. Class of 2009.. Federico M.. Gómez Vega.. Reporting Analyst.. Ternium.. (Argentina).. I am Reporting Analyst in the Finance and Management Department of Ternium, a leading steel company in Latin America.. Basically, my Department is in charge of the consolidation and analysis of the financial and operating information of the whole group, in order to present it to the chief executives for essential decision-making.. Furthermore, we conduct the management control of the group.. In particular, I am focused on the control, compilation, analysis, and presentation of financial information such as derivatives valuation and results.. Lluís Mateo.. Project Engineer / Assistant Projects Manager.. ThyssenKrupp Elevator UAE.. I joined the company in January 2010 and stayed three months in Madrid for theoretical training (called TK Seed campus) with other graduates recruited from all over the world.. After the training I was sent to Dubai, where my main responsibilities are to guarantee and control a smooth execution of the assigned projects.. Meaning, coordinate with factories, client and other departments of the company, to ensure a correct and on-time installation of our systems.. But also to control and monitor all the costs and variations of the projects in order to remain within the allocated budget.. Eye on Alumni Feature.. Giorgio Rivero.. SEAT Pagine Gialle.. I m a Senior Analyst in the Finance Department in Seat Pagine Gialle (Italian Yellow Pages).. In my office our job is mainly to prepare the financial reports and forecasts of all the Group companies, to monitor the dynamics and the criticalities of the debt and of the financial derivatives designed to hedge against the currency and interest rate risks and to provide all the financial information needed by our stakeholders, external analysts and rating agencies.. Wolf von Rotberg.. Economic Analyst.. Deutsche Bank.. For my interview presentation for Deutsche Bank, I used one of the value-at-risk models we developed in class during the Finance master degree, and I adjusted it in order to estimate potential capital shortfalls at domestic banks and their fiscal impact on the sovereign.. Class of 2008.. Alessandro Panozzo.. Consultant.. Accenture.. (Italy).. After having obtained a degree in Economics and Finance, I started worked for Accenture (Financial Services) as Business Analyst in risk management and Basel II projects (especially operational risk) across Italy.. In 2007 I decided to deepen my economic and financial knowledge by attending the Barcelona GSE s master program in Finance.. This sabbatical year was for me a great opportunity to extend my studies in the fields of finance, investments and business in an extremely multicultural environment and, last but not least, staying in an unforgettable city like Barcelona!.. Once I came back to Accenture, I could apply what I d learned to several areas of my work as a professional consultant:.. Comparison with international students has improved my soft skills during business meetings and for the organization of complex activities involving many people.. Financial training helped me in the analysis of specific aspects of operational, liquidity and interest rate risks.. Teaching, professional activities, and the latest research from the Health Economics and Policy Program directors.. Letter from the Directors.. Dear Prospective Participant,.. It is our pleasure to introduce to you the new master program in Health Economics and Policy with classes starting in the fall of 2011.. Barcelona has a well known critical mass of researchers and practitioners in the field that ensure the most successful training and career prospect.. One nice feature about health economics is that it makes the task of motivating the program an easy one.. It is obvious that there is a growing need of experts with a solid training in all aspects related to this fast evolving sector.. Indeed, most countries around the world are trying to come up with new systems to strike the correct balance between efficiency (the quantity versus quality tradeoff) and equity.. The health sector is witnessing technological advances whose implementation may be well  ...   reforms that we are witnessing in the last decade.. Also, the issue of individual responsibility (lifestyles, preventive behavior) and therefore incentives is becoming ever so poignant.. Health is indeed one of the main components of our welfare, but old recipes have become obsolete.. These issues, we are sure, should spur the curiosity of any individual concerned with the well-being of our society.. We have set up a program that combines analytical rigor and a deep knowledge of the interface of economics and medicine.. • Title: Master Degree - Health Economics and Policy - Barcelona GSE
Descriptive info: Master Program Description.. There is no doubt that the health status of the population is one of the main indicators of a nation s wellbeing.. In terms of policy, it is hard to find a sector with a more intense regulatory activity and reform, and more so in the last two decades.. Prompted by the ever rising costs of healthcare, governments are seeking to introduce incentives for cost containment while avoiding both limitations in the access to healthcare and reductions in its quality.. Insurance and equity criteria contribute to making the tradeoff between quality and cost more complex than in other areas of our economy.. All stakeholders, be health agencies in governments, healthcare suppliers, or taxpayers, are seeking professionals with a good command of analytic techniques and a deep knowledge of the institutional background.. This is the training that this new master aims to give to its students.. We are joining forces with two other related master programs under the umbrella of the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, namely, the Competition and Market Regulation Program and the Economics of Science and Innovation Program.. This gives our studies a comparative advantage over existing alternatives, which is expressed in a wider perspective of the healthcare sector.. Another of our aims  ...   we aim to endow students with the analytical capacity oriented towards decision-making in all aspects of the healthcare sector..
