  • Title: GSE Student Spotlight: The Formula For Success From an Academic Star - Barcelona GSE
Descriptive info: FAQ.. News.. Events.. Home.. News47.. Admissions.. Student Resources.. News & Media.. 18/01/2008.. GSE Student Spotlight: The Formula For Success From an Academic Star.. Hard work, diverse interests, and a passion for economics are three elements that have been key in Barcelona GSE student Toni Ahnert s academic success.. A student in the Class of 2008.. Msc in Economics.. program, Toni possesses an extensive background in economics, aspirations to continue his study in a PhD program, and involvement in a variety of hobbies and interests.. He graduated from the Msc in Economics at the University of Essex, and holds the school s record for best examination result in the past decade.. Adding to his accolades, he earned the best ever degree result in the Vordiplom in Business Administration and Economics at the University of Jena, where he completed his Bachelor s degree.. While applying to graduate programs in economics last year, he took courses in Macro, Finance, and Quantitative Methods in the Msc and PhD program at Humboldt University Berlin.. He eventually chose the Barcelona GSE Msc in Economics because of it s reputation, location, and quality.. The GSE Challenge.. Toni s experiences at the University of Essex and HU Berlin helped prepare him for the challenges of the Barcelona GSE by, he says, giving me the opportunity to take a wide variety of courses at a graduate level that prepared me for the level and equally important the pace of the GSE s research-orientated courses.. Says Toni of his academic achievements, I always try to take my responsibilities seriously.. I study continuously for the courses I m taking.. As a result he has been able excel academically and to stay near the top of his programs.. So far, he says, the Barcelona GSE has exceeded his expectations.. The courses have been intensive and rewarding, he says.. Most core courses are offered twice, as a more theoretical and a more applied course..  ...   I think that having other academic interests or involvement in university committees, sport clubs and the like helps you to mature and develop as a person.. An International Community of Learning.. Toni describes his experience at the Barcelona GSE as extremely positive.. He mentions the very supportive academic atmosphere at the GSE, emphasizing that there is a great deal of interaction and team work, both for problem set solving and exam preparation.. I ve never felt my environment to be competitive in a sense of not sharing papers, readings, and so on as it is said to be in other top institutions , he says.. The international makeup of the school- over 90% of the students come from outside Spain- also enriches his experience.. 64% of the Class of 2008 come from European countries, and there are students from every continent.. Toni s fellow students were attracted not only to the academic reputation of the program and the possibility of working with renowned professors, but also to the city of Barcelona, which Toni admits is a tremendously beautiful city with a lot of culture and a vibrant nightlife.. Looking Ahead.. After he graduates from the GSE in June 2008, Toni plans to pursue a PhD in Economics in Europe- perhaps at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, one of the reference doctoral programs of the Barcelona GSE.. He will likely specialize in topics related to Macroeconomics and intends to continue the extracurricular activities that he credits as an integral part of his success.. All in all, I believe that education is more than a mere list of courses from your chosen field; rather, it includes the other subjects, languages, cultures, sports and activities in general that challenge the way one used to think about issues.. Descriptive info: News41.. 23/11/2007.. Student Spotlight: Bernhard Silli Recounts his Path from the Classrooms of the Ciutadella Campus to the Trading Desks of the Goldman Sachs Quant Group.. When.. Bernhard Silli.. entered the UPF.. Msc in Finance.. in 2004, now offered in conjunction with the Barcelona GSE, he sought to deepen his theoretical knowledge and broaden his repertoire of analytical tools in finance.. Looking back, he sees that he chose the right program.. Currently in the last year of his PhD in Finance in the Financial Markets Group at the London School of Economics, this past summer Bernhard had an intense and eye-opening internship experience in Quantitative Equity Trading at Goldman Sachs International in London.. With hindsight, says Bernhard, The MSc in Finance prepared me well for the job in that it gave me basic intuition on how financial markets work.. The program also got me up to speed on the more technical side of finance and economics, which is essential, irrespective of whether you stay in academia or move on into the private or public sector.. Most importantly though, the interaction with my professors and colleagues in Barcelona initially sparked my interest in financial economics.. Preparation + Opportunity = Success.. Bernhard enrolled in the Msc in Finance after obtaining an Msc in Economics at the University of Warwick and a BSc in Economics and Economic History at the London School of Economics.. After looking at various programs throughout Europe and the US, he opted for the Graduate Program in Economics, Finance, and Management (.. GPEFM.. ) at the UPF, which now offers its Msc in Economics and Msc in Finance jointly with the Barcelona GSE.. He says, the program had been recommended to me by former students and professors alike.. The faculty itself provides  ...   Equity Trading, where he worked on a project that required him to apply financial knowledge and statistical techniques, many of which he picked up in his coursework and research in the Msc in Finance.. Describing his job, Bernhard says, Put simply, quantitative trading relies on computer models to make investment decisions.. The general idea behind these algorithms is to scan and aggregate information that has been shown to create profitable trading opportunities in the past and to extrapolate them into the future.. Of course, the exact natures of these strategies are some of the most highly guarded secrets on the street.. Nothing is more motivating than the feeling that you have done something of value.. Based on his experience, Bernhard emphasises that a key element to work in the industry is a strong understanding of the connection between theory and practice- something he learned in the Msc in Finance.. As he says, New ideas in academia will quickly be picked up by the industry and tested for their robustness and potential to generate profits.. At the conclusion of his internship, Bernhard was offered a full time position in the Quantitative Trading Group of Goldman Sachs, to begin in 2008 after completing his PhD.. This affirmation of his performance bolstered his feeling that not only did I get most out of my ten weeks at Goldman Sachs, but I was also able to contribute to the success of the desk.. Nothing is more motivating for me than the feeling that you have done something of value.. Related Content.. Barcelona GSE.. internships and career placement.. More.. student profiles.. From my Master in Economics of Public Policy I gained the competence to understand and to improve public policy evaluation methods, as well as an ability to work and communicate in different languages such as English and Spanish.. Finally, always surrounded by young international workers, I must say that this traineeship in Brussels reminds me a bit of the Barcelona GSE experience.. Elina Ladinska.. Researcher.. CPB Netherlands Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis.. I m working with topics related to innovation policies, currently evaluating whether specific policy instruments have an impact on firm R D performance.. I m very thankful to Barcelona GSE for giving us the right set of quantitative and qualitative tools for policy evaluation; it allows us to cover wide set of topics, quickly understand how to set up research and what are the options to overcome the dozens of limitations that you usually encounter when doing applied work.. • Title: Alumni Career Paths - Banking - Barcelona GSE
Descriptive info: » Banking.. (includes central banks, commercial banks, and investment banks).. Alex Hansson.. Analyst.. Credit Suisse.. Global External Asset Management.. I am currently working in the Technology Solutions team within the External Asset Management department at Credit Suisse.. What that means is that I support my colleagues on technology related projects for our clients including: analyzing investment strategies against available technology solutions; coordinating the implementation of new platforms (e.. g.. trading or portfolio management systems); and monitoring and analyzing the use of those platforms.. The work is demanding and manifold, but has been made easier to carry out with the knowledge and skills that I was able to gain during the Barcelona GSE Master in International Trade, Finance and Development.. Specifically, Prof.. Peydró s courses [on financial institutions, systemic risk, and financial crises] have really helped me to understanding the current and soon to be implemented banking regulations and how they will impact not just banks but also asset managers.. Indeed, having platforms that can screen investments in terms of their suitability, given current regulations, is something which is heavily demanded by our asset managers and which we are working on to implement at the moment.. Samuel Chapman.. Research Analyst.. Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.. As a Research Analyst at the Cleveland Fed, my responsibilities involve background research/lit review, data collection/cleaning, data analysis (use of statistical software), writing and editing.. as well as dissecting and analyzing new releases of economic indicators.. The daily work is quite diverse and each day is different from others.. I may have an economist come to me and say they have to give a presentation on the labor market in a few weeks.. I will then spend a week or so creating a presentation on leading labor market indicators and help them obtain the information and data they need.. Read the full Eye on Alumni interview.. Julian Ebner.. Trainee.. European Central Bank.. I spent my first six months as a trainee in the ECB s Financial Research Division before moving to the Directorate General Financial Stability.. As part of a working group dedicated to the establishment of the Single Supervisory Mechanism for banks in the euro area many of my tasks evolve around an extensive mapping of banking group structures.. I also frequently receive ad hoc requests for notes or reports on particular technical issues that emerge while the regulatory framework is being established.. Almost all of my tasks involve coordination with the different national supervisory authorities, which is a great chance to get exposure to senior experts and benefit from their experience.. I think the background I gained in macroeconomics, banking and financial markets during the Barcelona GSE Master benefits me strongly in my daily work and provides a solid base for understanding the variety of new issues and concepts I ve been facing since my start.. Jordi Galimany.. Macroeconomic Analyst.. Banc Sabadell.. My main responsibilities in Banc Sabadell involve analyzing the present economic situation of Spain and UK and submitting reports on different areas related with these countries.. This includes studying the financial markets (fixed income and forex mainly) as well as the macroeconomic fundamentals of each country and the global implications of their policy.. Also, we take care of forecasting several economic and financial variables and give our opinion and recommendations about different investment opportunities.. The skill I got from Barcelona GSE that I find most useful for my current job is the capacity to synthesize and manage many economic data and other information that is given to us.. Not to mention all the economic knowledge, that one way or another is applicable in many cases of study.. In the master I learned to work methodically and under pressure, and now I realize that this background has helped me in this job.. On the other hand, the fact that nowadays the economy, the financial markets and the policy (both fiscal and monetary) is very much intertwined, makes teamworking a necessary skill.. Each and every point of view in our research team is relevant and contributes to the group strategy.. Wischiro Keo.. Zurich Cantonal Bank.. (Zurich).. The most practical classes for my work with almost direct application are all classes which emphasized programming and scripting in statistical packages and the use of Excel (namely: Statistics and Econometrics, Continuous-Time Finance, Empirical Fnance and Financial Risk Forecasting).. The programming concepts I learned with STATA or MATLAB have given me an edge in learning to use other tools in a timely manner.. To be honest, before the year at Barcelona GSE, I couldn t have done my current job that efficiently!.. Eye on Alumni Interview.. Carlos Martínez Sarnago.. Economist, Financial Markets Unit.. la Caixa Savings Bank.. As an Economist within the Financial Markets Unit at the Research Department, my main responsibilities range from monitoring the evolution and performance of Equity, Fixed Income, Currency and Credit markets on a daily basis to the elaboration of reports on financial and macro-related topics.. In addition to analyzing the dynamics of financial markets and current and future macroeconomic scenarios, my current posting enables me to carry out applied research on specific topics in finance and macroeconomics and produce pieces of research to be published both internal and externally.. To me, this is a worthwhile experience in and of itself as I can now employ much of my educational and professional experienced acquired thus far.. Eye on Alumni Interview.. Cristina Rodríguez..  ...   occasions, now, I am so grateful for it, especially Time Series.. Of course, endless hours working with STATA and Matlab make my day much easier now.. Also, Empirical Finance as well as Macroeconomics in Banking (Topics in Finance) courses provided extremely valuable tools for doing research work.. Overall, I think that rigorous work from all of the courses and the research mindset that the master is emphasizing, will prepare you for a first class employer in many important institutions, like central banks.. Antonio Martner.. Portfolio Manager.. Chilean Central Bank.. I started working one month after graduating from the Barcelona GSE master program.. Right now I am strictly working with applied finance and have incorporated much of the finance material learned within the Master to daily challenges.. The most important skill I have learned from the master program is to be critical and rigorous in your work in order to solve problems.. Santiago Moldes.. Senior Corporate Auditor.. Merrill Lynch (Bank of America).. During my master s degree I gained the fundamental analytical tools to understand the complexity of the economic world which I am using today at my job.. Moreover, it provided me the right understanding of how macroeconomic interactions can affect the developing countries regulatory environment, and this helps me every day in my work when I am evaluating the company s business risk within this changing environment.. Tobias Neumann.. Prudential Policy Division.. Bank of England.. Material from the Financial Institutions Management course is what I probably use most as it provided me with a thorough understanding of how banks operate, which is obviously important for coming up with good regulation.. In addition, I use what we learnt on empirical finance and risk management for my work on capital requirements.. In fact, because the world in finance is so complex and interlinked, it s difficult to come up with anything we covered in the Barcelona GSE Master in Finance that I m not using or at least need to have an understanding of.. And, since the work at the Bank is very thorough and requires a high level of technical proficiency, the demanding courses we took at the Barcelona GSE really paid off.. Antoni Targa.. With changes in interest rates, international agreements with the Federal Reserve and other central banks, the turnover of Jean-Claude Trichet by Mario Draghi, the evolution of the debt crisis, all the hearsay regarding sustainability of the status quo and a context of increased social sensitivity to the relevance of macroeconomic policy the last months have been particularly intense inside the ECB.. I consider myself lucky to witness the current evolution of European fiscal and monetary policies, and I am grateful to the Barcelona GSE professors who helped me achieve this goal.. Hung Tran Kieu.. Head of Fixed Income Desk.. Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam.. The Macroeconomic Policy and Financial Markets master degree at Barcelona GSE has helped me much in my present profession as a rate trader for the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), one of the biggest commercial banks in Vietnam.. My responsibilities include managing and restructuring bond portfolios to optimize profit and minimize risks.. In order to do that, I need to have a deep assessment of macroeconomic indicators and know the financial market well.. I am also involved in activities such as bond issuance, underwriting, and sales.. Class of 2010.. Arin Chirapaisarnkul.. Interest Rate Swap Trader.. HSBC.. (Bangkok, Thailand).. Saffet Tinaztepe.. Citigroup.. New York, NY (United States).. I have two primary responsibilities.. First, I am a corporate banking analyst on a coverage team that is responsible for banking technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) clients with whom Citigroup has had a historically stressed relationship.. My second responsibility is to calculate our expected return on loan deals that are proposed by other TMT corporate and investment bankers.. Class of 2009.. Giovanni Gili.. Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy Department.. Intern.. Banca d Italia.. I am assigned to the Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy Department and I am currently working on a project about the housing market.. The goal is to build some affordability indexes that enable to measure the burden for a median (average) household to buy a house in Italy.. Natasa Jemec.. Analyst, Analysis and Research Department.. Bank of Slovenia.. Two recent research projects: Estimating output gap for Slovenia using production function approach and Analysis of inflation perceptions.. Writing articles for publications Economic Indicators of International Economy (GDP, inflation, interest rates figures.. ), Monthly Bulletins and Price Stability Reports.. Covering fields of International Economy (GDP, inflation, interest rates figures.. ), Competitiveness of Slovenian economy (describing the movement of real and nominal effective exchange rate) and Real sector (description of development of GDP components).. James Marrone.. (Economics).. Federal Reserve Board of Governors.. Washington, DC (United States).. My job consists of academic research, policy memos for the Federal Reserve governors, and peer review of other economists work for conferences or journals.. Most of my research revolves around finance and credit risk.. Right now I have projects regarding the variance risk premium, granularity of loan portfolios and contagion in financial markets.. Wolf von Rotberg.. Economic Analyst.. Deutsche Bank.. For my interview presentation for Deutsche Bank, I used one of the value-at-risk models we developed in class during the Finance master degree, and I adjusted it in order to estimate potential capital shortfalls at domestic banks and their fiscal impact on the sovereign..

Zita Vasas.. Economist, Competition Team.. Compass Lexecon.. I started working at the firm after graduating from the Barcelona GSE master program.. My main responsibility is to carry out various economic analyses under the supervision and guidance of the senior team in their different projects.. It is important that our reports read well so that non-economists such as clients and lawyers can also easily understand what has been done.. At the Barcelona GSE, we learned how to apply the theory to real-world problems, which was great practice for what I am doing now.. David Araujo.. Director.. TATA Consultancy Services (Ecuador).. I am the director of the Business Intelligence, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship Practice for the Quito office of TATA Consultancy Services.. (Brisbane, Australia).. Jake Morris.. Associate.. RBB Economics.. (The Hague, Netherlands).. I am currently working on a merger in the pharmaceutical industry between two of the largest global players.. It basically involves defining relevant markets and determining how much market power would be held by the combined entity in each of them following the merger.. This allows us to identify those markets that are likely to cause competition concerns, with the next step being to take a closer look at the validity of those concerns per market.. As the analysis covers a broad spectrum of markets across a large number of countries, it is a highly data intensive project with a relatively long duration.. A particular challenge here is being able to coordinate to collect sufficient data on a global scale and build up a reliable database as the foundation for further analysis.. Class of 2008.. Andrea Commisso.. LECG (Milan).. My job is to support senior economists throughout the entire course of an antitrust case.. Once I came back to Accenture, I could apply what I d learned to several areas of my work as a professional consultant:.. Comparison with international students has improved my soft skills during business meetings and for the organization of complex activities involving many people.. Financial training helped me in the analysis of specific aspects of operational, liquidity and interest rate risks.. Statistical methods have been useful in analyzing data and research information..

Descriptive info: » International Organizations.. International Organizations.. David Taylor.. (Trainee) Economist/Policy Analyst.. OECD.. I started my traineeship with the OECD pretty much straight after finishing the masters degree at the Barcelona GSE.. My work involves trying to estimate the impact that the Global Forum has had on the fight against tax evasion worldwide, which is really interesting and eye-opening stuff.. To do this I have had to read a lot of other peoples work in the same area to get some ideas of where to go.. The Barcelona GSE master program has helped me enormously to be able to make sense of complicated papers and estimation techniques, by giving me experience in data collection and, through the modules I studied at the GSE, to finally be able to put my work into practice.. But one of the greatest things to come from studying in Barcelona is the friends I have made, who I can still count on for advice when I get stuck at work today.. Gieltje Adriaans.. Project Associate.. Innovations for Poverty Action.. After having worked for eight months as a project associate in Peru, I transferred to Sierra Leone this June to work on the impact evaluation of a large public health intervention that aims to improve service delivery through community monitoring and non-financial awards.. The intervention is implemented in four rural districts and funded by the World Bank.. Data collection has just been completed and as a project associate I am responsible for data management, analysis and report delivery, thereby reporting to the principal investigators Johannes Haushofer (MIT), Bilal Siddiqi (Stanford University) and Oeindrila Dube (NYU).. The master program in International Trade, Finance and Development prepared me very well for this position, both in terms of the in-depth training I received in econometric methods and in understanding the interaction between research and development policy that is crucial in development research.. Constantin Albot.. ODI Fellow/Economist.. Overseas Development Institute.. As an ODI Fellow working for the Bank of South Sudan, my primary role is to provide capacity in departments where it is lacking so that processes within the bank and its performance as a public institution more broadly can benefit.. My first assignment was with the financial markets division, where I helped to reconcile the bank s foreign exchange accounts held with corresponding institutions.. No such reconciliation had taken place since the bank switched from manual records to an electronic payment system back in 2011.. Going forward, I m hoping to get involved with other divisions as well, such as statistics, general accounts and operations, in order to get a more complete exposure to the bank s workings.. The theoretical background gained through the ITFD program in topics such as growth, monetary policy and institutions, as well as the capacity to approach issues in a constructive way, have proved to be of great help throughout these challenges.. • Title: Alumni Career Paths - PhD and Postgraduate Studies - Barcelona GSE
Descriptive info: » PhD / Postgraduate Studies.. PhD and Postgraduate Studies.. Lavinia Piemontese.. PhD Student.. IDEA - UAB.. During my experience at Barcelona GSE I had the chance to gain from the teaching and the willingness of each faculty member.. In this special involvement at the master in Economics of Public Policy I have acquired a solid foundation in the field of Applied Economics, learning the necessary tools for the economic analysis of public policies.. Moreover I have benefited the rigorous structure of this master, indeed the complexity of the topics and the tight deadlines have helped me in working systematically and studying cleverly.. Thanks to this stimulating environment I have understood what I am really interested in and how I would like to design my research during the PhD experience at UAB.. After one year of intense coursework, my plan is to focus on the recidivism of young criminals.. In particular, I want to investigate the impact that education and job-training programs have on the likelihood of committing new crimes, through an empirical approach.. In my view this topic, besides being compelling, has potential relevant policy implications.. David Lugo.. MPhil/PhD Student in Public Health and Policy.. London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).. From my previous working experience and my masters studies at Barcelona GSE I become acquainted with the importance of giving value to the money spent in Health, in all settings but specially in low and middle-income countries that still need to deal with problems that the majority of the developed countries seem to have solved, such as access to basic health care services.. For this reason, I decided to focus my doctoral research on studying the changes in consumption and provision of medical care after the implementation of Seguro Popular - a voluntarily health insurance option available to the uninsured in Mexico.. In addition, I intend to measure the efficiency of public health care services.. My ultimate goal with this project is to understand the degree to which the financial burden caused by a potential over consumption (and/or over-provision) of health care combined with the current inefficiencies in the Mexican health care system represent a threat to the financial viability of the system.. Daniel-Oliver Garcia-Macia.. Stanford University.. After completing the Master in Economics at the Barcelona GSE, I was admitted at the Stanford University PhD program in Economics, among other top-tier American economics departments.. I chose Stanford mainly because its faculty features some of the globally most prominent researchers in my fields of interest: Macroeconomics and Economic Growth.. Based upon my own experience, I would strongly encourage all students who want to pursue a PhD in the US to consider taking the Barcelona GSE master in Economics.. Not only does it provide solid and rigorous training in graduate-level economics, but it also offers the possibility to be in contact with internationally leading professors and to share ideas with a very competitive and passionate pool of students.. Giuseppe Pratobevera.. Swiss Finance Institute.. After graduating from the Barcelona GSE, I was accepted to the PhD program of the University of Lugano, which is a part of the Swiss Finance Institute..  ...   but was even more so a great motivation to continue my studies in Economics.. Without the support of my professors in Barcelona I would neither have dared nor managed to do so in Stanford.. Andrea Papadia.. London School of Economics.. The Master at Barcelona GSE was fundamental for my development, principally in two ways.. First of all, it exposed me directly to the work of world-class researchers, which is now influencing my own research.. Secondly, the Master contributed decisively to my curiosity and appetite for research.. During my time in Barcelona, I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in economic research.. I enjoyed the intellectual challenges I had to face so much that I wanted to keep working on them.. After the Master I had two main professional experiences.. Shortly after leaving Barcelona, I did a trainee-ship at the EU Delegation in Beijing, China.. There, I worked in the Development and Cooperation Section, helping to manage a number of projects in the fields of Trade, Law and Transportation.. In 2013, I joined the UK Government Economic Service working for the Ministry of Justice as Assistant Economist dealing mainly with the international aspects of the work of the Ministry.. My research at LSE is going to focus on topics in International Finance with an historical perspective.. I will carry out a combination of empirical and theoretical research to identify the lessons that history can provide us to understand both past and current Economic events.. John Tsoukalis.. PhD Student, IDEA.. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.. Currently I am trying to model the demand for Internet news in order to garner insights into the types of firms which enter the news market, the biases which will be present in the market, and more importantly the quality of news and information produced.. The course I think back on the most now is definitely our Game Theory class.. I left that class not only with a good understanding and appreciation of game theory, but with a clearer sense that I wanted to pursue a PhD and to do research.. Niels Krieghoff.. PhD Student, Economic History.. My research focuses on banking regulation in the United States and Germany between 1930 and 1960.. Just recently I read a newspaper accounts stemming from the aftermath of the German financial crisis of 1931.. If I hadn t known that it was a piece from that time, I would certainly have thought that it was an article from today s times.. Much the same issues they were discussing back then, such as banker s bonuses, excessive risk-taking, a lack of business-ethics, etc.. , are being discussed today as well.. History doesn t repeat, but it does rhyme indeed.. read full interview.. Class of 2006.. Benjamin Golez.. The Master in Finance provided me with strong theoretical foundations on which to base my PhD research.. The program benefits from excellent links with renowned institutions and frequent visits by distinguished financial researchers.. Moreover, the collegial atmosphere amongst its students and the dedication of its faculty make for a vibrant intellectual community..
