  • Title: Benetvision
Descriptive info: This letter is from a woman you would never expect would need something like this:.. March 10, 2014.. I am currently incarcerated at York Correctional Facility in Niantic, CT.. I will be here.. for 8.. years for.. my vehicular manslaughter charge.. I was a second grade school teacher.. before this.. horrible nightmare.. occurred.. Much of my teaching was via the arts.. A fellow.. inmate introduced.. me to The Monastic Way by.. Joan Chittister I loved them.. The art is so.. beautiful and I found.. great peace in the daily reflections.. Is.. it at all possible for me to.. receive those monthly.. treasures, too? It would be appreciated more than you.. know.. L.. C.. This letter is from a woman whose whole spiritual life depends on your generosity:.. February 17, 2014.. Dear Benetvision,.. I write to express a grateful heart for all of your prayers, books and encouragement.. You.. have all.. deepened my faith and have expanded my spiritual horizons.. I truly want to.. know and.. be known by God,.. to make God known to others.. I pray for your ministry and I.. am so thankful.. for all your work.. Your.. support has enabled me to recognize that I am.. forgiven, and a child of.. God.. And that causes me to stand.. a little straighter, knowing that.. God doesn t see me as just a.. prisoner, but as His child.. And this one is from the chaplain herself to let us know, when we begin to take such things for granted, how.. important they are to both staff and inmates.. May 26, 2014.. Dear all at Benetvision,.. Many thanks for the copies of Joan s Journal.. I will be giving them out at the.. Wyandotte.. County.. Detention Center to the women who are in for a longer time.. Some will.. be going on to.. the state prison in.. Topeka.. I can t tell you how happy they were when I passed them out last year! Some had.. tears in.. their.. eyes.. Later, several brought them to my class to show me how they had.. written in them,.. filling every.. page and every inch of every page.. They also love getting Joan s monthly leaflet (The Monastic Way) which they use as.. a.. calendar, of.. course.. They find the little reading for each day challenging and we often.. discuss.. them when I m with.. them.. Please know how much your prison ministry means to local women here in Kansas.. City,.. Kansas.. Dear Friend,.. I m back.. If you are one of the many who have heard from me so many times before.. about this, you may be impressed by my persistence.. But it s your patience that is.. the stuff of which saints are made.. Your support for the Joan Chittister Fund for.. Prisoners is the reason I m still here.. We are in this together.. I got this letter and I want you to read it, too.. Because without you it never could.. have been written:.. Add a person in prison to your.. Christmas list.. For a donation of only $12.. we will send a special.. Christmas gift, a one-year.. Monastic Way.. subscription,.. to a prisoner.. August 4, 2014.. Dear Sister Joan,.. You  ...   this appeal, is what exactly does it do and is it worth.. it.. for those kinds of people?.. Before I can answer those questions, though, there are a few things you need to know:.. First, most prison chaplains are unpaid volunteers.. Spiritual materials, articles, even prayers, must all come from.. outside the prison budget and all at someone else s expense.. Which means that people who have lost everything.. family, friends, teachers, spiritual directors who are, in most cases, at the very lowest point of their lives and the.. social ladder have nothing to fall back on.. Provided, of course, that prisoners are even allowed to have these spiritual.. materials.. Prisoners are not allowed, for instance, to receive hard-bound books because books are classified as.. weapons.. When we began to hear from prison chaplains, many of them women religious, how few materials they had to work.. with, we were shocked.. Then, one year we had some overruns of calendars and.. and we decided.. to send them to prison chaplains rather than recycle them.. And suddenly, we began to get requests from everywhere that we ourselves could not possibly meet.. That s when we.. started the Fund for Prisoners.. That s why we set out to provide some of those services for them.. That s when I.. asked you to help.. Which brings us to the next obvious question: Why do we keep doing what we ourselves cannot afford? Isn t enough,.. enough?.. Well, before you go there, I want you to read some more of my mail.. Then, you decide.. Together.. we can fill a gap.. in the life of a soul.. theirs and ours.. Joan Chittister.. 2014 Appeal.. Now you decide if these people and this program are worth the investment, are worth the gift of a bit of the love.. we have all learned to talk about and to practice through the kinds of spiritual materials they, too, are seeking.. And decide after spending time with all these letters.. The kind that pour in every day asking you and me together to.. fill a gap in the life of the soul.. In theirs, yes, but in ours as well, so that we may all become what we say we want to.. be.. Thank you for thinking about this one more time with me.. Because I think about it all the time.. Add a person in prison to your.. This poem is from a manuscript sent to Joan.. Chittister by Stephen Lawrence Stoeltje,.. who is serving a life sentence in a Texas.. prison.. In his letter Stoeltje wrote, Several.. years ago you generously sent me one of.. your journals.. From these journal entries I.. have compiled this devotional manuscript,.. A.. Cross of Simplicity: Poems, Prayers and.. Paths Through An Interior Landscape.. The.. 94-page manuscript contains poems and.. reflections based on readings from Soren.. Kierkegaard, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Thich.. Nhat Hanh, Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen,.. Isaiah and other spiritual writers.. Stoeltje s.. letter explains, I have lived here in this.. Texas prison for the last 14 years.. I.. believe, however, that I am not defined by.. my past nor by my circumstances.. Serenity.. in Christ is available in any bad and hard.. situation..

It s that natural place within us where the roar of the water or the silence of the mountains or the.. warmth of the desert or the moss of the swamp soothes our souls and makes us feel human again, at.. one with the universe again, in control again.. Whatever it is, wherever it is, it calms us and makes us new.. For me, ironically, that special place was right in the center of the city.. In the very shadows of the city.. buildings lay a world beyond the world.. It was the public dock on the bay of one of the Great Lakes,.. where tourists  ...   tones, dared to sit alone on.. the breakwall in total silence.. There you could simply be yourself, no airs, no deadlines, no pressure,.. nothing false to serve or adore.. Nothing that required us to bow down before it.. There we just all.. melted into nature.. In our own day, when technology has trumped nature, we would do well to realize that those home.. places we all need and seek out in a time of the mechanical, the digital, the virtual and the plastic are.. calling us to the center of our real selves.. We must remember that it is the self for which we are.. seeking when we leave our worlds of glitz and glamour and sink into the real world.. It is environment.. that shapes us and it is the natural to which we must cling when everyone else abandons it; if not, we.. lose the very soul of our lives.. from.. Our Holy Yearnings.. by Joan Chittister (Twenty-third Publications).. A place called home.. Order this book now.. INDEX OF ALL IDEAS IN.. Sign up to receive Ideas in Passing.. Descriptive info: Human relationships may be the cement of life but they do not come easily or without cost.. But one.. thing for sure: They change us and in the end whether they succeed or fail relationships have the.. capacity to make us all better people.. In fact, is there anyone who does not know what it feels like to struggle through a relationship, to be.. damaged by one? Sometimes for years.. Who hasn t had to work through an experience of rejection or.. neglect, or jealousy? Who of us hasn t lost a relationship we were sure was so real it would last forever?.. What is the process, then, for coming to wholeness again after that kind of social and spiritual wound?.. Once the bonds of human relationship have been broken, what  ...   sign that those other emotions will be part of the struggle.. too.. We can t say everything about any of them but we can trace their basic connections enough to.. become aware of the emotional land mines they imply as well as talk about some possible ways of.. dealing with them.. To do that we will deal with five questions:.. What is the relationship between love and life?.. What should we forgive and how do we do it?.. What is reconciliation? Is it possible? Is it necessary?.. What is healing and how does it happen?.. What is the spiritual effect of pain and suffering?.. Love, Forgiveness and Reconciliation.. , a Monasteries of the Heart webinar presented by Joan.. Chittister on September 20, 2014.. Love, forgiveness and.. Reconciliation.. Order this D.. VD.. now..
