  • Title: Chester Bowl – Our Christmas Present | Chester Bowl
Descriptive info: I’m looking better this January not wearing those worry lines I usually carry over from Christmas.. We simplified the holiday this year and instead of presents bought a family season pass at Chester Bowl Ski Hill.. That was it.. No robot hamsters, ipods, or American Girl dolls.. The checkbook balance isn’t red, there aren’t as many small pieces cluttering the floor and the family is physically healthier.. Happier? Most definitely.. The majority of our kids okayed the skiing in exchange for presents.. Ellen was reticent, but John convinced me that the best gift would be if we did this as a family unit.. That’s when the gift became a risky endeavor.. I haven’t skied for twenty years.. I am so much older and wiser and scared now than I was twenty years ago–I am genetically practically a different person.. However, when 13 year old John described our family floating down a hill of fluffy snow, enjoying each other’s company, looking robust and rosy-cheeked, I couldn’t resist his salesmanship.. That’s the problem with kids; they’re always making you have fun.. If you haven’t been a part of this program before let me explain how it works.. In late fall there is a Chester Bowl Lottery.. Clued in Duluthians meet on a specified night, drop their names in a bucket, and Thom Storm, director at Chester Bowl, pulls names for people to schedule ski fittings.. Ski equipment is rented at a discount, but part of the trade off is that every family will volunteer time at the park.. The goal is not only to get people skiing; the bigger picture is to build community for the benefit of all involved.. So I showed up at the lottery, and within a month we all were outfitted with skis, boots, helmets, and poles..  ...   the kids but those are excuses for not having fun.. The biggest problem for me was doing something new.. That’s how we stay young, you know, challenging ourselves to do new things.. At least that’s what I tell myself as I slowly snow plow down the hill.. But imagine a 1950 s postcard from Minnesota.. Picture a warm, sunny chalet at the base of the ski hill.. People inside sit around in Nordic sweaters playing cards while family members traipse in and out from the slopes.. Adults are in charge.. Kids are behaved but having a lot of fun.. Neighbors and co-workers greet each other over hot chocolate and the fresh faces of active children.. Everyone is in a good mood because they have been exercising in the fresh air.. Even strangers new to town are welcomed into the fold as soon as they sit down at a table with that grim look.. “Do you have a kid out on the slope?” I asked a woman across the table from me.. She was frowning out the window, looking stressed.. “Yep.. This is his first time down, but he’s with a cadet” she said anxiously.. “Are you new to Duluth?” I asked.. She was and pretty soon we, both transplants, were expounding on the warm community we found ourselves in.. Pretty soon she wasn’t watching the hill quite as intensely.. So now I have a new friend, a new skill set (downhill skiing), new muscles that hurt (skiing does wonders for the inner thigh and buttocks), healthy and active children and a new community to give to and receive from.. I didn’t expect all those things from a Christmas gift.. • Title: Community | Chester Bowl
Descriptive info: I am always moved when over Christmas break I see 80-some kids on Chester s slope.. It begs the question, Where would these children be if not here? Home alone playing video games while parents are at work? Getting into mischief? Instead they re outside learning a life sport, while the older students are learning responsibility  ...   embroidered in them) as they help out the little ones.. There s a lot of love in this place.. From the adult volunteers who make the races happen to the no questions asked scholarships to ensure that any family that wants to ski can get out there.. Chester Bowl is community at its best.. Lucie Amundsen..

  • Title: Duluth Winters are loooong | Chester Bowl
Descriptive info: For the first time in a decade, I did not partake in the fall ritual of ski-fitting.. My boys have grown up.. Spirit Mountain passes in hand, they’re off to black diamond runs, snowboarding terrain parks, and afternoons in the chalet with their high school friends.. I’m practically tearing up just thinking about it.. The snow has not even flown, and I’m longing for the days of dropping them off just a few minutes from home, a couple bucks in their pockets for a hotdog and a hot chocolate.. My sweet little slope-bombers, who literally logged hundreds of hours each season on Chester Bowl’s compact runs.. Charlie and Ben first strapped on skis at ages six and four, and Chester Bowl immediately became the center of their childhood.. Their many friendships, their sense of confidence, their sense of responsibility—so much of who they are now as young men, as teens, can be directly traced to the endless days they spent exploring their abilities and their relationships at Chester.. First as skiers, then ski cadets, and finally working in the summer camp program as “Incredibles” to earn their Spirit Mountain passes.. To have such  ...   tough to measure up.. My affection and gratitude for Chester Bowl is also selfish.. I would have gone full-out batty in winter with those kids locked up inside.. I shudder to think of what kind of parent I would have been had I been forced to contend with two rammy boys and a long Duluth winter.. Or ten.. Nor can I imagine how I would have funded winter fun without the rental program.. I was able to give those boys a lifetime sport that was well out of our financial reach.. I even skied myself a few years!.. I expect my boys will still show up a bit at Chester Bowl this winter.. The hill will look smaller to them again this year, and the little kids will seem to take up all the room on the chairlift.. But this place is home to our family, and we’ll be back—on the slopes, at the fundraisers, and hopefully, for the last day of skiing, when the frozen pond is topped off with water and the kids fly down the hill and do spectacular, hypothermic wipeouts.. (That’s my favorite day of the season!).. Jana.. 38508..

  • Title: From Florida | Chester Bowl
Descriptive info: My son and I traveled to Duluth from Florida.. We had never skied before.. I was a bit apprehensive, but Alexander was ready to go! Thom quickly fitted us with skis, and then it was off to the hill.. We practiced a few times at the bottom.. To my amazement, I was at the top of the hill 20 minutes later, with Thom at my side, coaching me the whole way down.. I never expected to learn to ski in  ...   of course, picked it up very quickly and spent the next three days skiing.. Thank you Thom for your guidance.. Chester Bowl is truly a gem.. It is affordable, and has given my 13 year old memories of a lifetime! We can t wait to come back another winter.. Kare Weinrich.. • Title: On their own for the first time | Chester Bowl
Descriptive info: The past 3 years my hubby and myself have been teaching my niece and nephew to ski.. They have non-skiing parents and live 5 hours away so opportunities to ski are limited to once a year.. They are now 7 and 9.. This year as part of their Christmas break I again brought them to Duluth to ski Spirit Mountain and Chester Bowl.. On our day at Chester we proudly and happily sat in the Chester snack area and watched them independently ride the chair lift and ski alone  ...   first time as we could keep an eye on them yet have them ski alone, a perfect combination that really doesn t exist at bigger ski areas.. We are thankful for Chester Bowl area to help give them the confidence and experience to ski independently for the first time.. And as the Auntie to do it in a safe place.. We also enjoyed the affordable snack and beverage prices! Thanks to Chester Bowl and all their staff and volunteers..
