Descriptive info: Criminal Charges Against Activists Won’t Solve Boeung Kak Lake Crisis.. Media Comment.. Released on 2011-11-29.. Phnom Penh, November 29, 2011 – We, the undersigned civil society organizations, deeply regret the Phnom Penh authorities’ decision to bring criminal charges against four Boeung Kak Lake residents following their participation in a protest on Nov.. 28.. We do, however, commend Investigating Judge Chhay Virak’s decision to release the accused under court supervision today.. CCHR condemns beatings and arrests of lake protestors.. Released on 2011-04-21.. This is a shocking and entirely unjustifiable response to a peaceful protest by the disenfranchised lake residents.. The arrests of children and beatings of elderly women represent a new low in what has already been a hardly fought land conflict.. If anything, the actions of the authorities today illustrate that the rights to freedom of assembly and expression of ordinary Cambodians is secondary to the business operations of the wealthy and well connected.. What is of particular concern however is the extent to which the authorities are clearly willing to go to facilitate those business operations.. Civil Society Condemns Conviction of Human Rights Defenders Involved in Kampong Chhnang Land Dispute, Cambodia.. Released on 2011-01-26.. Civil Society calls upon the appeal Courts to review  ...   Defamation.. Conviction of Sam Chankea is an Attack on Freedom of Expression.. CCHR President Ou Virak noted, “The verdict in the case of Sam Chankea is a worrying precedent for those who are willing to speak out against the actions of the economic and political elite of Cambodia.. The new Penal Code lowered the threshold for defamation.. This case shows that the enforcement of this law can be easily manipulated by money and political influence.. ”.. Rights of monitors abused and protestors blackmailed as crackdown on freedom of expression continues unabated.. Released on 2010-03-03.. Deepest concern is expressed at the prevention by Dangkar district police of a demonstration by villagers against the alleged seizure of their farmland, the arrest and reported blackmail of villagers who attempted to take part in the demonstration and the deletion of photographs taken by human rights monitors from the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Organisation and the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights.. Statement of Heng Peov.. Released on 2006-07-27.. I am now in hiding in a neighbouring country and cannot go back to my beloved country Cambodia.. My Government has been mounting a propaganda campaign against me since I left Cambodia on 23 July 2006..
