  • Title: About LTA
Descriptive info: About LTA.. CIVICUS.. believe both the freedom to operate, and the ability to do so in a responsible manner, is critical for ensuring civil society actors are able to effectively represent their constituencies and support democratic decision making.. The accountability of non-governmental organizations is essential for the legitimacy, sustainability, effectiveness and protection of the sector and is more important now than ever.. The aim of the Legitimacy, Transparency and Accountability (LTA) programme at CIVICUS is to improve public trust and the credibility of civil society organisations and their activities through the enhancement of their accountability systems and structures.. In response to a strong call from CIVICUS constituents the LTA programme seeks to address one of the major challenges organisations cite when considering internal accountability initiatives which is a lack of support and information to take principles into practice.. This programme aims to build the capacity for CSOs to respond to challenges to their roots, authority, and right to speak on behalf of broader constituencies.. Ultimately the programme is aimed at strengthening the influence and public standing of CSOs, and their ability to act effectively, with integrity and for the public good.. It relates to CIVICUS vision of a society in which the roles of civil society in development and governance are recognised, respected and fulfilled.. The specific LTA programme objectives that seek to strengthen good practice within civil society are:.. To identify LTA challenges and needs of CSOs, and conduct analyses for action and interventions;.. To effectively utilise existing expertise on LTA issues within civil society and other sectors  ...   and enable organisations to learn about methods and techniques they could use in their organization and networks.. Sifiso Dube coordinates the LTA Programme.. CIVICUS’ added value.. CIVICUS’ role and added value are in bridging, connecting and convening LTA practitioners (e.. g.. national associations and networks), conceptualisers (e.. Keystone, OWT) and academics who are confronted with the challenges and ensure that what is being developed meets the needs of the CS community around the globe.. Moreover, there are many organisations in the world whose mission or parts of their programmes are about or dedicated to LTA.. But there is no other organisation who brings them all together and guides CSOs to various resources (websites, events, publications, CIVICUS LTA guiding documents that will be prepared, etc.. ) to learn more about and practice LTA.. CIVICUS added value to the CSOs, to the organisations working on LTA issues and the space of global civil society is in communicating and promoting the issue among CSOs, and working as a platform for those whose mission the LTA really is, academics, various partners, groups and individual CSOs.. Results and impact of the LTA programme.. In the next three years, the LTA programme is expected to achieve the following results:.. Increased awareness of the challenges and needs of CSOs in regard to matters pertaining to LTA.. Improved communication and cross-learning amongst CSOs on LTA mechanisms;.. Established and functional structures for knowledge creation and dissemination on LTA issues;.. Enhanced knowledge and understanding of the concepts and frameworks of LTA;.. Ownership of a self-sustainable project by CSO participants..
