In a new series of blogs, Jorge Ribalta, an artist, editor and curator based in Barcelona, proposes a historical understanding of documentary practices in photography, specifically during the Cold War.. The rise of documentary rhetoric and discourses in the prewar era reflected the need to provide a visual tool for the representation of the working class and its new agency in mass democracy.. But histories of photographic modernism, mostly a postwar construction, offered specific 'liberal' versions of the emergence of the documentary discourse that had long-lasting effects.. Until July 15, Ribalta will bring to discussion how liberal humanism seemed to be an unsurpassable discursive and ideological horizon in postwar photographic avant-gardes and their historical narratives.. Rua Acácio de Paiva, 27 R/C.. 1700-004 Lisboa.. Portugal.. Mark Themannn (Australia, Melbourne) is the featured artist in the 33rd edition of EMPTY CUBE, which will be held in the premises of Appleton Square, a gallery in Lisbon, Portugal, on June 25th, 2014.. 'Zone' is a project that, in keeping with the orientation of his work, will explore a performative dimension, questioning viewers about the historic contextualisation of the 'white cube' as the temporal and spatial device that is more generally known to us as an exhibition gallery; a subject that has proved quite fruitful in terms of the debate concerning the display of artworks, and has been widely commented on by artists and theorists during the 20th century, particularly in the 1960s, when the art gallery itself was envisaged as the object of  ...   inside the cube, which for a single night will occupy, like an intruder, the gallery that holds it.. The action, which, Themann carries out in this project, focuses on language as a means that allows us to explore, in space, issues that originate in our most intimate thoughts.. However, the device inside the cube possesses the potential, by means of its three-dimensional visuality, of broadening the various fields of production of meaning which this unrepeatable moment may open.. Considering the assumptions, in regards of the rules in this apparent game, as well as the fact that the cube's space is expected to be the location where the succession of events will take place, their duration and near-imperceptible transformation disclose a temporal metrics that has been predefined between the artist and another player, in accordance with a random principle that plays a decisive role in our process of approaching this work.. The project will be photographically documented, and some of the photos will be displayed on the project's site –..

Descriptive info: Friday 20.. Esiri Erheriene-Essi, Pussy Riot (For Asata), 2013.. Esiri Erheriene-Essi in Museum Arnhem, the Netherlands, Europe.. museumarnhem.. nl.. Until September 7 Opening hours:.. Tuesday - Sunday 11 am -17 pm About one hour drive from Amsterdam.. info@museumarnhem.. Linda Schregardus.. +31 26 30 31 400.. Utrechtseweg 87.. 6812 AA Arnhem.. The Netherlands / Les Pays-Bas.. Museum Arnhem presents Don't support the greedy, the first major, museum solo exhibition of Esiri Erheriene-Essi.. 'I like those scenes in which everything comes together, where various sources and diverse disciplines—art, politics and pop songs—converge to form a new entity,' remarks the artist.. The title Don't support the greedy is taken from one of the many texts that Esiri Erheriene-Essi (London, 1982) has chosen to accompany her paintings.. The text is inscribed on a placard held by the three singers, the Supremes, who often appear as a theme in Erheriene-Essi's paintings.. For the artist this trio symbolizes the 1960s, the era of race riots, the black panther party and Martin Luther King, Jr.. ; meanwhile these black soul singers hid their Afro hairstyles under wigs during performances, smoothing over the seedier realities of oppression behind the scenes.. The text appears on the painting Pussy Riot (For Assata) (2013) that not for nothing refers to the contemporary Russian female protest punk group who— unlike the Supremes—do not disguise their social and political criticisms.. Erheriene-Essi employs in her paintings and drawings a plain style, sometimes mixed with flat, taut lines.. Through the expressive use of colors—a great deal of yellow and red—and raw, sketch-like streaks, she paints subjects inspired by an immense archive of images from newspapers, magazines, and films, on the one-hand, and by music and literature, on the other.. Contemporary events sometimes form the connection to seize back events from the past.. It is striking how different events through  ...   career Erheriene-Essi willingly saw herself as a chronicler of daily life.. Her triptych Casual Observers (2006) is thus constructed as a comic strip: it is a snapshot with close-ups from the lives of her friends and captures 24 hours of banal activity in an individual's life.. In the painting Confessions of a Gigolo (2009) a naked boy lays out in various snippets his thoughts on the trendy art theories of the time and inspiring artists such as Lucian Freud and Chantal Joffe.. In addition to these 'comic strip' works, the exhibition at Museum Arnhem includes paintings where Erheriene-Essi takes historical photos and films as a starting point.. Photos of crime scenes by the photographer/photojournalist Weegee, among others, lay the groundwork for paintings where the bystanders as well as the murder victims are spotlighted.. Other works are based on images of lynching scenes; from various archives documenting race related atrocities in late 19th century North America as well as second WWII executions.. The charged nature of these scenes is strongly accented by the combination with musical texts and frivolous musical notes.. In her recent works Kalopsia and Avwebo (Expensive Shit) from 2013 Erheriene-Essi portrays a 'happy African family', inspired by the idealized family scenes from African Challenge (a popular Nigerian magazine in the 1970s), where the effects of colonization and striving for Western ideals of family life was problematized.. The artist paints her scenes against a background of images from the same period ranging from racist advertisements to news photos.. Erheriene-Essi considers her work as '[.. ] small vessels with information.. As an artist you are a witness of your time.. You must inform yourself in order to analyze events and then offer a creative commentary on them.. '.. Don't support the greedy is accompanied by a publication in English.. Price € 15,- ISBN/EAN: 978-90-72861-52-8..

Descriptive info: 'But does it float?' A SUMMER SCHOOL.. OPEN CALL.. http://thisisthebarbershop.. blogspot.. Application deadline:.. 26th June.. Duration:.. From July 28th to August 1st.. thebarbershop.. lisbon@gmail.. Margarida Mendes.. Rua Rosa Araujo 5.. Lisboa.. BUT DOES IT FLOAT?.. A summer school at The Barber Shop.. 28July – 1Aug 2014.. Application deadline: 26th June.. In the peak of summer, The Barber Shop invites you to an intensive programme dedicated to the investigation of geophilosophy and processes of mattering.. By inquiring into how matter functions as a time capsule or a black box, this programme reflects on our comprehension of geological and planetary frontiers as tools for communal decision-making.. While necessarily probing the processes of deterritorialisation and subsequent virtualisation that structure our surroundings, this investigation encompasses also the impact of inhuman forces and nonorganic life in the game at play.. How do we include invisible cartographies and virtual matter in the day-to-day human action? Can we recognize the dimension of deep time as intrinsic to the development of matter, and furthermore of our own cultural actuality? How do we position ourselves within this Anthropocenic moment?.. To explore these issues, The Barber Shop invites researchers, writers and artists to lead a series of lectures and group debates over a week period The programme also includes a sound performance, a film night and a collective walk.. The sessions will take place daily from 28th July to 1st August, as the afternoon heat fades.. GUEST SPEAKERS:.. Adrian Lahoud.. Godofredo Pereira.. Ben Woodard.. Jonathan Saldanha.. Joana Rafael.. Paulo Crawford.. KEYWORDS:.. deep time, processes of mattering, climatology, territorial fiction, opaque topologies, geophilosophy, sonic resonance, dark matter.. DESCRIPTION OF LECTURES:.. 'Ungrounded Life: Natural Complicity and the Conditions of Movement' by Ben Woodard.. Examining the depth of the material contingencies between the inorganic and organic registers of the Earth has become commonplace whether in vitalism, New Materialisms, or Media Archeology.. The ramifications of such a complicity however, are often made safe for humans whether via an abstract sense of life, affect, or a generic humanist sense of materialism.. I wish to argue that such safety can only ever be methodological, that there can be no ultimate separation of ourselves from the grounding forces of the Earth.. Through the work of FWJ von Schelling I will argue that an unbound notion of nature allows for a more rigorous articulation of an inhumanism than the strategies mentioned above.. This seminar will examine how the geological and the biological (as articulated by Schelling) leads to a naturalistic inhumanism that is a consequence of, and not an exception to, the naturalness of human beings and human thoughts.. B.. W.. 'Underground Fetishism' by Godofredo Pereira.. This lecture is an investigation into the underground as a planetary frontier.. Focusing a series of resource intensive territories - from the Niger Delta in Nigeria, to the Orinoco Oil Belt in Venezuela and the Atacama Desert in Chile - as paradigmatic cases of an attraction for the underground, the lecture will trace a series of exhumations (from symbolic political leaders and victims of genocide, to geological strata and mineral riches) to unground entangled histories of human rights violations, environmental destruction and resource extraction that result from the quest for El Dorado.. Foregrounding the fetishistic relation between objects and the territories of which they are evidence, manifest in the contemporary emergence of geoforensic practices, this lecture will show how exhumations have become increasingly central to the constitution of new territorial imaginations.. G.. P.. 'Floating Bodies' by Adrian Lahoud.. In recent decades two major shifts have transformed our understanding of the Earth in relation to the irreversible impact of seven billion human beings.. Firstly, we can now look up through the sky and make out the structure of our shared atmosphere, or look down through the ground, making visible the Earth's geologic architectures.. Secondly, the barriers of past and present begin being breached, as computational simulations are able to reveal our geo-climatic futures.. These two shifts constitute a revolution that is both political and aesthetic, as in revealing the Earth's invisible geometries they link economic activity in one part of the world, to conflicts and devastation in another.. However, they do so in ways that reveal how existing legal, political and philosophical resources are ill equipped, as they are built on histories of human experiences that are proximate in time and in space.. This presentation will depart from a case study that links aerosol emission in the Northern Hemisphere to drought and desertification in Africa's Sahel.. The argument will suggest that if this case can  ...   relativity and Einstein's theory is beginning to fail? How all this could affect our notions time and space? P.. C.. ~.. LOCATION:.. The Barber Shop Rua Araujo 5, Lisboa.. FEE:.. 100 Euros.. Housing solutions may be suggested for foreign applicants.. MATERIAL FOR APPLICATION:..
