Thanksgiving in Early Childhood.. Fun with snow!.. Reading with Principal Mrs.. McCrimmon.. Up, up parachute!.. 21st Century learning.. Yum.. baking.. !.. PE Fun!.. Explore, discover, learn.. and have fun!.. Welcome to the Friends Academy Early Childhood Program, the perfect space for our students ages 3, 4 and 5, where the children in both Play Group and Pre-K are brought together for many of the learning experiences in our program.. This multi-age group atmosphere offers numerous benefits to all children.. The older children become role models of positive behaviors as the younger children learn from them through observation.. This peer mentoring is also beneficial in cognitive development and allows the children to thrive in a family-like environment.. The Early Childhood Program is comprised of our Play Group and Pre-K programs.. Our Play Group welcomes our three-year-old members of the Friends Academy community, and our Pre-K program welcomes our four- and five-year-olds.. Our program emphasizes the teaching of the whole child.. Socialization, independence, and language development.. are fostered through hands-on activities and artistic and musical expression.. Math and science skills.. are taught  ...   ; a bright, sun-lit, warm and inviting Victorian-style house, that offers a dynamic learning environment comprised of modern amenities, and.. state-of-the-art technology such as SMART technology boards and HATCH interactive learning tables.. Painting on outdoor easels, planting flowers in our outdoor garden, and running and playing in the fresh air in our gated play area are just some of the wonderful experiences that the children partake in outside of the Withington House.. The children in both our Play Group and Pre-K programs participate in.. special-area classes.. on a weekly basis.. These classes include Spanish, Art, Physical Education, and Music.. Introducing a world language and fine arts at an early age encourages children to be creative and expands their cultural experiences.. Physical Education is important in helping the children to develop their gross motor coordination, and introduces them to the concept of team work.. The early years of a child's formal education are the foundation on which their academic future is built upon.. A strong academic foundation will foster a lifelong love of learning and help our children develop the necessary skills for future academic success.. Descriptive info: Life in the Lower School >>.. Academics >>.. Arts >>.. Physical Education >>.. Lower School Faculty.. Meeting for Worship.. Community Service.. Library.. Technology.. My favorite time during the school day is the time in the morning that I spend welcoming children to school.. My goal is to learn every student s name early in the year so that I can greet each and every child by name.. It is incredibly important for young children to know that they matter.. Lower School is an exciting time in a child s development.. We have the honorable task of helping students to create a foundation for their learning.. We start with their natural curiosity and continue to build interest, knowledge and skill.. As a community of learners  ...   even the youngest child.. Our literacy teaching utilizes Writer s Workshop, guided reading and mentor texts to build every child s understanding of the craft of reading and writing.. Our math curriculum balances deep conceptual understanding with skill-building.. We integrate arts and sciences to ensure greater student engagement as well as to foster student ability to make connections across subject areas.. The Quaker tenets of equality, peace and integrity bind our community of learners together.. We seek many ways to create and foster community including service learning and family-style dining.. We view.. Responsive Classroom.. as a way to strengthen our ties to each other and to understand other perspectives.. I invite you to visit us in the Lower School.. Descriptive info: Middle School.. Athletics>>.. Faculty.. Student Life.. Special Programs.. Mr.. Rubenacker's Blog.. iPad Insurance.. When I was in 6th grade my favorite class was Social Studies.. While I was interested in the material, what left the largest impression was my work with the teacher and his continued interest in my progress long after I left the school.. Later on, in high school, I continued to have one great history teacher after another.. Finally, in college, my professor of ancient history commented on how fortunate one was to have the pleasure of working with children on something as important and meaningful as the study of history.. I think back on those interactions and quickly appreciate how I ended up in education, a teacher of history nonetheless!.. Many of us can look back on our memories with different teachers and quickly begin to connect the dots.. These relationships can be transformational and quickly work to send individuals down their path in life.. We have a great school with tremendous things  ...   our ability to forge meaningful relationships with all of our students.. Small, intimate classes give students an ideal setting to begin experimenting with their ideas, take risks, and to better understand themselves not only as a learner but as a person.. We strive to understand the complexities in their lives so we can deliver the most meaningful instruction with the greatest degree of individualization and care.. The Middle School program is built to expose children to multiple facets of learning and different ways of doing things.. Whether it's required participation in athletics, our advisory program, the arts or in their everyday academic classes, students are exposed to different disciplines in order for them to develop what their passionate about.. These passions can be transformative and last a lifetime.. We hope that you take the time to see all that Friends Academy has to offer, including our cozy corner of campus that we call the Middle School.. Best Wishes,.. for the Middle School 2013-14 Course of Study.. 10/16..

The four-year journey of high school is critical to a young person s emerging sense of self.. Central to a Quaker education, students are encouraged to be reflective, to develop the ability and skill to look within and discover their passion.. Friends students are challenged to think differently, to unleash their creativity, to take risks and embrace learning all in an effort to help discover their inner light and to connect more deeply to their natural talents.. We challenge our students to be courageous and open minded in all their pursuits at Friends!.. It has been my pleasure to be a part of this educational community for over 25 years, working closely with students, faculty, and parents to bring our school s Quaker mission alive.. 10/11..
