    Descriptive info: Collingwood Horticultural Society.. COLLINGWOOD HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY/GARDEN CLUB.. Welcome!.. In 1882 a group of local merchants came together to establish the Collingwood Horticultural Society in support of the Great Northern Exhibition fall fair.. In 1911 the society was subsequently taken over by the Agricultural Society.. The CHS was revived in 1933 and continued to do its good work until World War II.. In 1972 it was once again revived and has met regularly ever since.. more.. The COLLINGWOOD ARBORETUM.. (.. entrances are located off First Street.. , on Hickory Street (parking at end of street) and Cedar Street at Harbourview Park).. The Collingwood Arboretum was once a landfill site, home to rubble, broken glass, and carpet remnants.. The 5.. 5 acres on the shores of Georgian Bay was stockpiled with all kinds of household waste.. And what a waste that was!!.. In 1995 members of the Collingwood Horticultural Society had a vision to transform this landfill site into a place for quiet retreat, a place for learning about the importance of trees.. With support from the Town of Collingwood and several generous donations from members and the community the vision became reality.. The area was cleared of some of the rubbish and soil was brought in to top dress the area (3 feet of topsoil throughout).. COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD.. ************..   • Title: GardenOntario: Durham & District Horticultural Society
    Descriptive info: Come Grow With Us.. Durham and District Horticultural Society.. For many years the records of any early organization were not available, but recently some of these have come light.. From the first minute book of the first Horticultural Society organized in Durham, it is read that a meeting for this purpose was called by several enthusiastic residents on November 19th, 1896.. This was held in the Middaugh House.. Dr.. Jas.. Gun was elected Chairman and Wm Gorsline, Secretary.. A representative of the Ontario Department of Arts and Agriculture address the meeting.. On January 18, 1897, the first regular meeting was held to deal with election of officers for the new society with Christopher Firth as President and Wm Gorsline, Secretary and John Kelly, Treasurer.. On a motion by Dr.. Gun and John Kelly this society became associated with the Ontario Association.. In September of that year an exhibition of plants and flowers was held, specializing in cannas and gladioli.. Members received premiums - the first was twelve gladioli, costing  ...   was recorded in 1902.. Between 1902 and 1912, the society devised fund-raising schemes, to make improvements in connection with the town and the society.. The last entry in this, the only minute book available, was for June 10th, 1912, when a lively discussion was held on how to encourage more active interest among the young people of the Town of Durham and the neighbourhood.. *********************************.. In 1970 a group of interested persons met to discuss the possibility of re-organizing a Horticultural Society for the area.. A charter was presented to the new group dated March 12th 1971.. Fred T.. O'Brecht was elected as President.. In 1974 a Tree Planting Programme for Durham and area commenced and is still on going to date.. (to see more information see about us).. The society is appreciative of both grants and generous donations received each year.. Many persons have served through the years on the executive and as members..
