Leave a Response.. Indian Hill instructor Sue Gleason teaches flute to a student in the Ayer-Shirley School Music Partnership.. Indian Hill Music is committed to sharing the transformative power of music, and giving music generously when there is need.. It sounds like a lofty ideal, but our dedicated music teachers and orchestra musicians put our mission, “Giving Music Generously,” into practice every day through our community education and outreach programs.. The cornerstone of these programs is the Ayer-Shirley School Music Partnership, which offers after-school instrument lessons to the region’s elementary school students.. For over a decade, lean school budgets have not allowed for instrument lessons at the elementary school level.. In addition, a great many students in these economically diverse towns have not had access to private lessons outside of school.. Through the Partnership, 4th and 5th graders at the Lura A.. White and Page Hilltop Elementary Schools are able to take lessons in flute, clarinet, saxophone, percussion, trumpet, trombone, or violin for a small fee, with free or discounted instrument rental, in a supportive group setting.. In addition, Indian Hill offers scholarships for anyone not able to afford lesson or rental fees.. Music is fundamental to the human experience, so it is unthinkable that a child would not have access to a good music program as part of their education,” says Michael Havay, Director of Indian Hill Music School.. “For those school districts who have found it necessary to cut the arts for the sake of budgets, partnerships like ours with Ayer-Shirley School District become even more essential.. Shirley resident Sue Gleason has taught through the Ayer-Shirley Partnership since it began in 2007.. The Indian Hill flute and recorder teacher says she is thrilled to teach these students, and is uniquely qualified to teach and relate to them, because she sees herself in them.. I didn t grow up privileged, she says.. When I expressed interest in music, my mother had to borrow money to buy my flute.. Sue paid for her lessons and bought her music with the money she earned from a part-time job.. Today, through the Partnership, Sue is able to give back to her community.. I can bring my whole-life experiences to the table,” she says.. “It can be a challenge, but it’s incredibly rewarding.. You have to love the students the most important thing is patience.. We are very grateful that my daughter has had the opportunity to study flute with Sue Gleason.. She is a top-notch teacher, with an approach that is wise and encouraging.. After just a few lessons with Sue, my daughter was able to read and play simple melodies, which helped to keep her excited and motivated about learning to play! Taking flute lessons through Indian Hill has also given my daughter a sense of pride and has helped her develop the confidence to perform in front of a group.. S.. Anders , Shirley, MA, Mother of Ayer-Shirley School Music Partnership student.. Sue is especially proud of the progress her Partnership students have made, three young girls in particular.. “Three of my students, all 4th grade girls in Ayer, share parental involvement in their education, a commitment to weekly practice, and a genuine love of the flute,” she says.. “The students played in my studio recital at Indian Hill Music School last spring, alongside my private lesson students.. One of the Ayer students even decided to challenge herself by playing the teacher parts in the pieces.. ”.. I m always up for working with kids in Ayer and Shirley, she said.. “It s wonderful that we can provide something for kids who have less.. Indian Hill Music began this community outreach in 2007, to fill the musical void left by extensive budget cuts in local schools.. In its 8.. th.. year, the program offers group lessons, “Instrument Petting Zoos” for 3.. rd.. and 4.. grade students, in-school professional concerts for the entire school community, and participation in open houses for parents and students.. This academic year, the Partnership will also offer a masterclass with world-renowned flutist and educator Jim Walker and a tour of Shirley-based Burkart Flutes; and fully funded music therapy sessions for 40 middle school special education students with Indian Hill music therapists.. The Ayer-Shirley School Music Partnership and its programs are made possible by the generous support of an anonymous individual donor, and: Ayer Rotary Club, Bemis Associates of Shirley, Groton Ayer Realty Trust, Haartz Corporation of Acton, ISS of Shirley, Nashoba Valley Healthcare Fund, North Middlesex Savings Charitable Foundation, Red Hat of Westford, and Target Corporation.. Special considerations for  ...   began as a dream of mine in high school,” said Sayde.. In her award-winning book about Wharton, biographer Hermione Lee describes how the writer herself wanted to see the book performed as a play.. Sayde’s musical composition sports a chamber orchestra, and features three soloists in the roles: “Ethan Frome” by lyric baritone Sam Garcia (Bienen/WCAS 17), “Mattie Silver” by mezzo-soprano Stephanie Feigenbaum (Bienen, master’s student), and “Zenobia Frome” by Alana Grossma, soprano (Bienen, 14).. Alexander credits his compositional work with enabling him to obtain an interview at Google where he will intern this summer at the Goopleplex in Menlo Park.. He recalls how Google rejected his first application two years ago.. Last year he flopped his resume around, featuring his “hobby” of music composition at the top of the application.. He also decided to feature the Frome work as it was taking up so much of his free time.. Sayde subsequently got an interview, and then spent Fall, 2013 as an intern at Google’s facility in Ann Arbor.. He previously completed two summer internships at Wolters Klover, one in the Chicago area, and the other in Manhattan.. Sayde looks to work after graduation, and eventually pursue a master’s in business.. Music will undoubtedly remain a time-consuming but preferred hobby for him.. Inspiration: The Peace of Wild Things.. April 28, 2014.. For the last Besas Memorial Concert of the season, pianist Eric Kamen and flutists Ona Jonaityte and Ashley Addington will be performing pieces from a wide variety of composers including Eric Kamen! In addition to being a performing pianist and instructor at Indian Hill Music School, Eric is an accomplished composer.. His piece, The Peace of Wild Things, will make its debut at the concert.. We sat down with Eric to learn about his inspiration.. At the outset, Ona and Ashley built the program around pieces they thought would be contrasting in style, period and technique, flavor and expression reflecting their personal tastes and experience.. When Ona initially proposed the concert to me, I offered to compose a new piece for two flutes and piano instrumentation especially for this event.. For my piece, I had set out initially to write music that reflected my feelings for and about special places and landscapes that I ve known or imagined in my life.. The music was not meant to reflect a literal impression of places but more my own personal connection emotionally to these special landscapes.. As the project progressed, with most of the score sketched but not yet coalesced into a whole, I serendipitously came across a poem by naturalist and poet Wendall Berry.. I actually heard him read the poem during a Bill Moyer s interview and broadcast on PBS.. I was so moved and stirred by his reading and the content of the poem, I realized at that moment that my music and his poem were of the same spirit.. So I decided in that moment to title my piece, The Peace of Wild Things.. after the title of his poem.. His words expressed for me what my piece was going for in musical expression.. In the spirit of Franz Liszt, who through his own travels was inspired to compose music to portray his strong sensations and most lively impressions, I set out to express through music my own deep emotional connection and feeling for the phenomena of nature.. Here is the text of the poem:.. The Peace of Wild Things.. BY WENDELL BERRY.. When despair for the world grows in me.. and I wake in the night at the least sound.. in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,.. I go and lie down where the wood drake.. rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.. I come into the peace of wild things.. who do not tax their lives with forethought.. of grief.. I come into the presence of still water.. And I feel above me the day-blind stars.. waiting with their light.. For a time.. I rest in the grace of the world, and am free..
