  • Title: News Room
Descriptive info: December 30, 2013.. Starting Saturday, January 11, the McPherson Public Library will hold its 21st annual Great Magazine Giveaway.. The library keeps issues of its approximately 160 magazines for a couple of years.. The back issues from 2011 have been pulled, and the public is invited to browse and take what they want free of charge.. The event starts at 9 a.. and lasts throughout the weekend.. This popular event is, according to Jennie Hall, Head of Adult Services, a win-win for the library and our patrons, since it gives the library adequate room for new magazines, and gives a second life to old magazines.. The magazines will be located on tables in the library meeting room.. Plan to come early for the best selection.. The magazines will remain out over the weekend.. For more information about the magazine giveaway, call the library at 245-2570.. The library is open from 9:00 a.. to 5:00 p.. on Saturday and from 2:00 p.. on Sunday.. ###.. November 12, 2013.. The photograph collection of the McPherson Public Library contains some 1,500 images, with many hundreds more waiting to be processed.. Out of all those photos, is it possible for anyone to select only a limited number of favorites? The two members of the library staff who work with the photograph collection the most -- Rachel Brandt, Photograph Archivist, and Steve Read, Library Director – decided to find out.. Favorite Historic Favorites: Selections from the Library Collection , is an exhibit of enlarged reproductions of some of images which Brandt and Read like the best.. Limiting the number of selections to only nine images each made for a difficult task, said Steve Read.. Each of us could easily fill the room with our favorites.. The images in the exhibit range in time from the earliest known photograph of McPherson to around 1940.. They are favorites for varying reasons: some are of exceptional historical significance, some have an aura of mystery about them, and others are humorous in nature.. Whatever our reasons for choosing them, said Read, these photographs are all part of the rich fabric of the history of our city and county.. The exhibit will run through the end of December.. November 5, 2013.. Is the book really better than the movie? The McPherson Public Library invites all readers to explore that question during their Book vs.. Movie Showdown throughout the month of November.. Patrons can check out a package which includes both the book and its DVD movie adaptation, and then read, watch, and turn in their opinion on which is better.. All participants will receive a  ...   the higher fines.. We are a public library and we have to be sensitive to what our patrons want.. In addition to lowering fines, the library also is giving patrons the opportunity to pay off any new or existing fines at a significantly reduced rate of 50% of the total.. The library invites all patrons to visit the library during the first three weeks of November, the 4th through the 22nd, pay off any fines they might have, and check out some new materials.. The library is planning a special way of showing their appreciation for patrons who have no fines or clear their accounts during that time.. The 50% off fines opportunity does not include charges on patron accounts for lost items, damaged items, and collections.. October 24, 2013.. Book Characters will Come to Life on Halloween at Library.. This Halloween, patrons of the McPherson Public Library will have their only chance outside of Disneyland to see a real-life White Queen from Narnia, a proper Mary Poppins, and Gatsby s glamorous Daisy Buchanan.. All throughout the day on Halloween, many library staff members will be dressed as famous fictional characters.. Some library staff will be out in the book stacks, while others will be working behind the service desk.. The public is invited to try matching staff with the books they represent – anyone even giving it a try will receive a treat.. Any patrons who come dressed as fictional characters will get an extra prize!.. This is a chance for us to celebrate both Halloween and books, said Jennie Hall, Head of Adult Services.. With characters drawn from children s, teen, and adult fiction, we think it will appeal to all ages.. October 2, 2013.. Bob Smith Prints Available at McPherson Public Library..
