Recorded Seminar Archive (PIRSA).. PIRSA is a permanent, free, searchable, and citable archive of recorded seminars from relevant bodies in physics.. This resource has been partially modelled after Cornell University's arXiv.. org.. Every seminar, seminar series, and collection of seminars is given a unique number, the PIRSA#, which allows each specific seminar to be referenced.. We offer seminar content in the following media formats: Windows Media, Flash, MP3, and PDF of slide or presentation materials.. • Title: PIRSA - Perimeter Institute Recorded Seminar Archive
Descriptive info: Since 2002 Perimeter Institute has been recording seminars, conference talks, and public outreach events using video cameras installed in our lecture theatres.. Each recording consists of a video of the speaker and a sequence of captures of the speaker's slides or, in the case of a blackboard talk, a sequence of captures of the blackboard.. As of January 2008 there are more than 1700 recordings and we are accumulating new recordings at a rate of about 10 per week.. Seminars have always played an important role in propagating knowledge.. However, from the earliest days it has been the written rather than the spoken word by which scientific knowledge has been recorded, archived, and passed down.. These words were written on paper and archived in libraries.. In 1991 Paul Ginsparg, then at Los Alamos, set up an electronic archive (arXiv.. org) for physics articles.. This revolutionized the way physics was done in many fields.. By moving beyond paper, scientific ideas could be communicated almost instantly to the rest of the world.. This revolution happened just about as soon as technology allowed it.. Now technology has progressed further to the point that we can record and usefully archive seminars.. The Perimeter Institute Recorded Seminar Archive (PIRSA) at pirsa.. org makes these talks available to the scientific community over the internet.. PIRSA is modeled on arXiv.. It is a permanent, free,  ...   talks (such as a conference, workshop, school, or course) will have a collection number (for example PIRSA:C06009).. The numbering system is explained.. here.. Seminars are a different and complimentary form of communication to articles.. Often a researcher will present new ideas long before they write an article presenting the ideas and, in many instances, they never write the article.. Permanent archival of seminars allows researchers to listen to talks they were unable to attend and revisit talks they attended many years after the talk was originally given.. They will be able to cite these seminars in their own seminars and written articles just as journal and arXiv articles can be cited.. There are ongoing technical challenges for a seminar archive that are more serious than an archive for articles.. First, formats for video files are subject to change and we will need to keep old files accessible.. Second, there will be scope to improve the quality of the recordings themselves both through improved procedures in recording them and because improvements in technology will allow higher quality recordings to be transmitted over the internet.. We are committed to meet these challenges.. Currently PIRSA is only for talks given at Perimeter Institute.. However, we are investigating models by which an international archive can be established.. The value of such an international archive to the scientific community could be truly tremendous..

Descriptive info: You can return to the home page by clicking on the PIRSA logo in the top left hand corner.. The search box at the top right hand corner can be used to find talks by a particular speaker (partial searches on the first or last name will bring up a list of options) or to find talks with particular words in the title or abstract.. This box also appears at the bottom of the home page.. For more advanced searches (specifying a date range, a subject area, and key words in the title and abstract) click on.. advanced search.. The home page lists five numbered options for different types of search.. The catch up facility allows you to search for recordings made in the last week, two weeks, or  ...   (alternatively you can simply type in the URL pirsa.. org/#).. This works for series and collections as well as recordings.. This option can be used to bring up a list talks in a particular series for any particular term.. The term can be changed either by returning to the home page or by clicking on the URL given for the series.. Talks will be displayed in reverse chronological order.. This option can be used to select a particular collection.. Conferences, workshops, and schools are selected by selecting "conference/school".. Courses are selected by selecting "courses".. Collections are not open ended and are displayed in chronological order.. Perimeter Institute has an active interest in bringing scientific ideas to the general public.. Recordings in our outreach program can be selected using this option..

Descriptive info: Recordings.. The basic atoms of PIRSA are the recordings themselves.. Each recording has a unique number of the form PIRSA:07060042.. In this example, 07 is the year the recording was made, 06 is the month, and 0042 indicates that this is the 42nd talk scheduled for that month (note that the ordering here is with respect to when the seminars were scheduled rather than when they are given since it is at the scheduling stage that the PIRSA number is allocated).. Not every scheduled seminar is actually recorded (particularly the more informal ones) and so there are some numbers that will not appear on the PIRSA archive.. Each recording has its own URL (for example pirsa.. org/07060042).. Recordings of talks are available from midnight on the day the talk was given.. Series.. There are a number  ...   001 is a label for that series.. Each series has its own URL (for example pirsa.. org/S001).. At this webpage one can select the term and year to view seminars for any given term.. Recordings are displayed in reverse chronological order for series since one is most likely to be interested in the most recent talk.. Series are open ended.. Collections.. Collections are for conferences, workshops, schools, courses, and any other collection of recordings which is not open ended.. Each collection has a number of the form PIRSA:C06009.. In this example the C stands for "collection", the 06 is the year the collection was recorded, and the 009 indicates that this was the 9th collection scheduled for this year.. Each collection has a URL (for example pirsa.. org/C06009).. Recordings in a collection are displayed in chronological order..
