  • Title: About RPHP
Descriptive info: Mission.. Summary of Projects.. Current Prospective funders.. Make a Donation.. Biographical Sketches.. Mission.. The Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP).. RPHP's mission includes:.. Research:.. Studying the links between low-level radiation and world-wide increases in diseases, especially cancer and those affecting the newborn and children and to become the leading, world-wide source of information on radiation and public health issues.. Education:.. Publishing the results of research dealing with the impact of low-level radiation on public health and to disseminate this information to the public, media, policy makers and the scientific community.. Public awareness:.. Promoting public awareness and responsible public policy related to radiation and public health, in the areas of freedom of information.. objective medical and scientific investigation.. institutional accountability.. independent oversight.. and responsible public health and environmental policy.. History and Accomplishments of the Radiation and Public Health Project.. RPHP was founded in 1988 as a fiscally sponsored project of the United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice by Jay M.. Gould and Benjamin A.. Goldman as an outgrowth of their work at Public Data Access, Inc.. In 1995, it was established as an independent non-profit 501(c)3 organization after many years of work by Jay Gould, Ernest Sternglass, and others.. Given RPHP's threefold mission in the areas of research, education and public awareness, the history of RPHP can best be traced through its books and articles on radiation and nuclear issues--by Jay Gould, Ben Goldman, Ernest Sternglass, Joseph Mangano, Bill McDonnell, Janette Sherman and Jerry Brown.. During the first half century of the Nuclear Age a growing body of medical and scientific evidence has emerged to demonstrate a probable causal link between low-level internal radiation from the ingestion of man-made fission products and world-wide increases in immune deficiency  ...   the post war decades, revealing the various epidemiological anomalies: In the 1950s, children born after the enormous initial exposure to nuclear fission products began to experience epidemic increases in childhood cancer in the ages 5 to 9.. In.. USA Newborn Deterioration in the Nuclear Age: 1945-1965.. , RPHP found.. a cumulated excess of about 1 million infant deaths over the 50 year postwar period, attributable to exposure to all post-1945 releases of chemical and radioactive pollutants.. In 1963, when children born in the traumatic initial year of 1945 reached the age of 18, there began a mysterious 20-year decline in Scholastic Aptitude Scores (SAT), which only improved when the tests were taken by those born after the cessation of aboveground superpower nuclear bomb tests, which had exploded the equivalent of 40,000 Hiroshima bombs between 1945 and 1963.. With the onset of another wave of fallout in the form of accidental and 'normal' releases of low-level radiation from civilian nuclear power reactors, rapidly coming on line in the 1970s, RPHP found a linkage to the emergence of immune deficiency diseases in the 1980s, including AIDS, as well as early breast cancer (for women baby boomers reaching age 35).. Concerning America's cancer epidemic, RPHP has analyzed official National Cancer Institute, age-adjusted, breast and prostate cancer mortality rates, available since 1950 for every county in the United States, and demonstrated highly significant correlations between high cancer death rates and proximity to nuclear reactors.. The Enemy Within: The High Cost of Living Near Nuclear Reactors.. , RPHP showed that of the over 3,000 counties in the United States, women living in about 1,300 nuclear counties (located within 10 0 miles of a reactor) are at the greatest risk of dying of breast cancer..

RPHP has as part of its mission to publish the results of research dealing with the impact of low-level radiation on public health and to disseminate this information to the public, media, policy makers and the scientific community.. This mission includes promoting public awareness and responsible public policy related to radiation and public health, in the areas of freedom of information.. The Tooth Fairy Project.. - RPHP has tested 4780 children's teeth for levels of radioactive Strontium-90.. We found that average Sr-90 levels rose 50% in the 1990s, are highest near nuclear  ...   Preliminary findings show average Sr-90 levels are considerably higher than those of healthy children.. The Long-Term Health Effects (Baby Boomers) Study (St.. Louis Study).. - Our third major focus is the result of an unexpected gift of 85,000 individually-identified baby teeth from Washington University in St.. Louis.. These teeth, not used in a landmark 1958-1970 study, give us the unprecedented opportunity to examine health effects of bomb test fallout on Baby Boomers.. Identifying and testing teeth of 200 Boomers who have died and/or developed cancer by age 45, and comparing results to 200 healthy Boomers will provide a meaningful test on whether Sr-90 raises risk of death and cancer..

Descriptive info: Books.. Journal Articles.. Trade Articles.. Reports and Testimony.. Books.. Radioactive Baby Teeth: The Cancer Link.. This important book describes past and current studies measuring amounts of Strontium-90 in baby teeth, and how this radioactive chemical raises the risk of childhood cancer.. The book reads like a mystery, beginning with the discovery of an old ammunition bunker where thousands of baby teeth from the 1950s are stored.. It is an easy-to-read account of one of the most crucial science and health issues of the 20th century.. To read a sample chapter, click here.. To order from Barnes & Noble click here.. The Enemy Within: The High Cost of Living Near Nuclear Reactors.. This book offers substantial evidence of the adverse health effects of radioactive emissions in high risk areas near each nuclear reactor site.. At a time when both environmental and consumer protection legislation is under attack,.. Gould's book is a potent and alarming reminder of the necessity of continued vigilance and skepticism in the face of the government's and industry's reassurances concerning the dangers of nuclear power.. With a wealth of backup data, Gould raises the critical and unanswered questions on the risks of breast cancer and other hazards of living near nuclear reactors.. However controversial, we ignore Gould's warning at our own peril.. Samuel S.. Epstein.. Professor of Environmental and Occupational Medicine.. School of Public Health.. Deadly Deceit.. discusses the importance of statistical estimates of excess numbers of deaths with regard to man-made radioactive pollution.. Practical examples are given showing global effects from Chernobyl fallout in 1986, low-level radiation effects from nuclear bomb tests, and similar effects from nuclear power reactors.. Read select chapters.. Low Level Radiation and Immune System Damage: An Atomic Era Legacy.. Mangano.. This book establishes an undeniable connection between the nuclear buildup of the past and the widespread health problems seen today.. While baby boomers were growing up in the 40s and 50s, aboveground atomic bomb tests and startups of civilian nuclear power plants were carried out without fear of public exposure to radioactive emissions.. Although the consequences of low-level radiation are still hotly debated,.. Mangano's research findings emphasize a direct link between nuclear exposure and immune system deficiency.. Published by Lewis Publishers, Inc.. (July 1998).. ISBN 1566703344.. Profiles In Power: The Antinuclear Movement And The Dawn Of The Solar Age.. Jerry Brown's book,.. Abram Petkau, head of the Medical Biophysics Branch of the Canadian Atomic Energy research laboratory in Manitoba, announced a discovery that should have shut down the nuclear industry as a matter of human survival.. But he was not heeded and nuclear testing, nuclear power plant operation, and nuclear waste disposal continue 26 years later.. Petkau discovered that chronic low-level nuclear radiation exposure produced far worse damage to living tissues than high-dose, short-term exposure.. Continuous exposure to small amounts of nuclear radiation can destroy cell membranes in a matter of minutes to hours, leaving cells, especially those in the immune system, open to damage and destruction by free radicals (toxic  ...   to other cancers as well, this book is being published at a critical time.. This assumption has often been made in the past, only to be proven wrong by scientific studies.. Click here to read the entire letter.. • Title: Thyroid Cancer Stories
Descriptive info: An open letter by Jessica Renshaw, daughter of noted Hiroshima researcher, asking for support for landmark RPHP study.. Dear Friends,.. I am the daughter of Dr.. Earle Reynolds, who was sent by the American government to research the effects of the Hiroshima bomb on the health of exposed children (1951-54).. We later sailed our family yacht Phoenix to both American and Soviet testing areas (1958 and 1960) to protest nuclear weapons.. The Atomic Energy Commission funded the original research on the effects of radiation in Hiroshima--until the results of the research, showing radiation to be adverse to public health, conflicted with the AEC's attempts to reassure the American public regarding the risks of radiation so the government could undertake a series of atmospheric nuclear explosions in Nevada and the Pacific.. The AEC cancelled the Hiroshima research and suppressed my father's findings for four years, until the testing program was over.. You will be glad to know that impartial, scientific studies on the connection between radiation and cancer have been resumed.. As you can imagine, they are no longer funded by the government, so the scientists--an epidemiologist, a a radiation physicist, a toxicologist, etc..  ...   listed there.. I'm sure you agree that this research is important.. If you are a baby boomer, how are your chances of developing cancer increased by the fact that nuclear testing was releasing radiation into the air you breathed and water you drank as a child? Of the 85,000 teeth donated for study, the Tooth Fairy Project has only been able to study 300 so far.. It costs $75-100 to study each tooth--and the half-life of the radiation (Strontium-90) in the teeth is 29 years so the research can not be put off indefinitely.. Since there are no government or other grants presently available to the Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP) which oversees the Tooth Fairy Project, please join my husband and me in (1) supporting the Tooth Fairy Project with financial donations and (2) passing this information on to other individuals, anti-nuclear organizations, peace churches and so on which may be willing to donate, too.. (Do you know anyone with a spare $8,470,000 to underwrite the whole project?).. For further information about the Tooth Fairy Project or to donate online, contact Joe Mangano, Director, at.. www.. Thanks!.. Jerry and Jessica (Reynolds) Renshaw..

  • Title: Thyroid Cancer Stories
Descriptive info: Personal Stories From Persons With Thyroid Cancer.. From Diana Santaiti:.. I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in March 2005.. Before this I was an healthy 30 year old.. I even had a routine physical and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.. Its funny how things work I was in a small fender bender in late February 2005 and I went to see a chiropractor to check out my sore neck.. when he was adjusting my neck he felt a lump and he ask how long I had this and I had no idea I even had a lump.. The next couple of weeks I was in a haze going through the motions but not actually there.. I had meet with so many doctors and had sonograms and a biopsy and finally surgery not once but twice since the first time they thought it was not cancer.. I can't explain the feeling I got when my doctor said it was Thyroid Cancer! I don't think I heard anything else he said after that I just remember crying and saying to myself I might die!.. I don't think I really hit me until I was sitting across from my radiation oncologist saying wow I have an oncologist.. I think the next part of this was the hardest I need to take a small pill and sit in a room for a couple of days away from my husband and baby.. I sat in the room thinking I can feel sorry for myself or I can fight.. I choose to fight.. I was fortunate enough to have great friends and family to see the good in all this bad.. Today five years later I still wonder why this happened to me and how.. I always thought it had to do with something environmental but I could never corner on what it was.. After reading Joe's article I feel like I have an answer on what has plagued me for five years.. I hope that further research and studies can possible wipe out a disease that no  ...   nodules.. I had a complete thyroidectomy and followed up with radioactive iodine treatment.. It's been a struggle getting my levels regulated, but I guess I'm grateful to have a curable cancer.. I have always suspected it came from Indian point.. There are so many people I know in the Rockland area with Thyroid Cancer - it's alarming.. Unfortunately these areas suffer from all types of cancer, I consider myself one of the lucky ones.. When I was diagnosed, they asked me if I ever was exposed to radiation.. Of course I had the average dental x-rays etc.. but I had to attend a field trip to Indian Point plant when I was in High School around 1981 or 1982.. I've often wondered if I was exposed to something either that day or on a regular basis in our neighborhood?.. Personally, my wish is to close Indian Point.. During the news conference a representative from there said that Joe Mangano was blowing things out of proportion.. Tell that to the large number of friends I have that have also been diagnosed.. They say that Thyroid Cancer is curable so it's not a big deal.. You try going through the surgery, radioactive iodine treatment, and the general fear of this diagnosis and then tell me it's no big deal.. Let's not have the statistics for Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Westchester keep rising.. I just had another dear friend have her thyroid removed last week.. She grew up in Stony Point.. Another victim.. At least let's bring awareness to people in the area that if they are experiencing symptoms they should consult a doctor.. Physicians in these counties need to be diligent in checking thyroid levels etc.. Most people do not know they even have it.. Click here to read.. • Title: Spotlight
Descriptive info: Spotlight.. The Journey called Life.. By Agnes Reynolds RNC.. Yes, Life was Good! What more could I ask for? After years of infertility, Jon and Michelle arrived November 29, 1991.. I remember how proud my husband was as he cradled them, blissfully unaware as my obstetrician skillfully converted my cesarean into an emergency hysterectomy.. Having worked in Labor and Delivery, I knew the words well.. Prostin please; Can we have some extra hands in here? Do we have general anesthesia? I prayed Please God, I waited so long to be a mother.. I just want to live and be a mother.. And I was heard.. Over the next four years of Jon and Michelle's childhood, I never knew how tired one could be.. Yes, I had worked the rotating shifts, the back to backs, the 12 hour shifts of the nursing life, but nothing really prepares you for the fatigue of twin motherhood.. How busy life had become, but the rewards were great I was a mother!.. April 7, 1996.. It was Easter Sunday.. It was no wonder Jon had vomited shortly after dinner as he and his sister had more than their share of candy at Grandma's.. As I helped him back to the table, he was irritable and appeared pale.. I became uneasy as I looked him over.. Surely, it was the candy or the stomach bug, which had thrived all week at their preschool.. I knew then it would be a long week.. As the next several days passed, Jon began to spike fevers and grew more pale.. Was that petechiae on his earlobe? No, it wasn't that as I quickly put the thought out of mind.. It must have been related to his Easter Sunday big boy shirt with the stiff collar.. Within the next two days, it was gone.. We went to the pediatricians for a check and he was diagnosed with a virus.. The intermittent vomiting, diarrhea and temperature were the bug du jour and it was a nasty long one.. I felt reassured and went home.. During the next several days, Jon's temp steadily climbed and I grew more uneasy with his paleness.. The last night before our trip back to the doctors was a long one, as his Tylenol just didn't seem to bring down his temp.. He vomited again only this time it was there.. Two small pencil sizes spots of purpura were dotting his shoulder and now his nose and lips had a blood tinged crust.. We are at the doctors as soon as they open, I thought as hemolytic something raced through my mind.. April 17, 1996.. Jon's primary physician met us at the office and I could see the look of concern on his face as he greeted us.. I relayed the night's events and the suspicious purpura as he laid Jon down to examine his abdomen and skin.. He explained that Jon's liver and spleen were enlarged and his legs now revealed a faint petechiae yes, I guess my first thought was correct.. I didn't want to believe this was happening.. Not my little boy! We were sent to the new Connecticut Children's Medical Center, which had opened just the week before.. No, I didn't want to see it like this !.. April 18.. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia the words echoed as Jon's oncologist relayed the news.. His pancytopenic profile of the day before, HCT 18, platelets 5,000, WBC 1.. 6 with 80% blasts and 0 ANC was confirmed early pre-B ALL by bone marrow aspiration.. The good news was that it wasn't aplastic anemia and not in his CNS.. Has Jon been exposed to ionizing radiation or benzene asked his oncologist? He was the only one who ever asked and I will always remember those words.. 1996 to 1999.. Over the next 3 years, Jon underwent Hickman placement with subsequent induction, intensification and maintenance chemo going into remission at 2 weeks from diagnosis, a favorable prognostic indicator.. He has been off chemo since June of 1999 and May 6, 2003 will mark 7 years and the beginning of childhood cancer survivorship.. As our family struggled to cope through the ups and downs of having a child with cancer, I began to search causation.. Why did my healthy 4 year old child suddenly become so ill? What in our lifestyle or environment caused his little body to go haywire? I kept thinking about the oncologist's question ionizing radiation or benzene, but no, we had not even had one x-ray.. My search for causation turned to the Parents of Kid's with Cancer message boards, pub med, Hematology Basic Principle and Practice and the Internet.. I became immersed on environmental causes of cancer and came upon the Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP).. The words on their website seemed to jump out at me Low level effects of ionizing radiation and The Tooth Fairy Project.. The New York based Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP) is a group of dedicated independent researchers studying baby teeth for levels of Strontium 90 (Sr-90), a radioactive substance present in the environment related to atomic weapons testing and is one of several radioactive particulates released as effluents from nuclear reactor emissions.. Once airborne, Sr-90 is carried via wind and rain, settling on land and water.. It enters the human body via the food chain.. Sr-90 mimics calcium in property and is deposited in bones and teeth where  ...   know Mr.. Mangano over the past two years as he endured my endless emails and phone calls helping to educate me on my new job.. I was pleasantly surprised at his passion for his work, and had developed great respect for his persevering attitude, despite their uphill battle involved with such controversial and many times, political work.. After all, there won't be academic grants from the energy industry! I began to learn just what the phrase conflicts of interest in science really means.. At 40 years old, I was politically naïve, but I was learning.. Mr.. Mangano's previous work was as a health administrator in hospitals and quality assurance/cost control.. What motivates Joe Mangano to be such a dedicated and committed researcher? I asked.. I felt I could make more of a contribution to people's well being by getting into disease prevention instead of trying to figure ways to spend less money for treatment.. After reading articles by Drs.. Jay Gould and Ernest Sternglass, he made contact and his new career began.. He has published 17 articles and wrote a book.. Low Level Radiation and Immune System Disorders: An Atomic Era Legacy.. , related to effects predominately affecting the generation Baby Boomers.. Janette Sherman MD is the author of.. Life's Delicate Balance: Causes and Prevention of Breast Cance.. r and.. Chemical Exposure and Disease.. , and has published well over 70 articles.. She specializes in Internal Medicine and Toxicology.. Sherman worked in radiation and biologic research at the University of California nuclear facility and at the US Naval Research Laboratory at Hunter's Point in San Francisco.. Her undergraduate degree is in Biology and Chemistry from Western Michigan University and a Medical degree from Wayne State University.. She has been an advisor to the National Cancer Institute on breast cancer and to the EPA on pesticides.. She is currently an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Western Michigan University.. What motivates Dr.. Sherman? I asked.. I became alarmed at the number of sick people I examined early on in my career, most were sick with preventable illnesses largely due to chemicals in their work places.. My view was expanded as I saw children with cancer and birth defects from water contamination and pesticide use.. My world was further enlarged while writing my book where I researched not only chemicals and hormone disrupters, but nuclear bombs and power plants.. After her book was published, Dr.. Sherman's grand daughter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at age 3.. After learning of this, I thought We would all be touched in our lifetime it no longer just happens to others.. Gould Ph.. , Director and Founder is an epidemiologist and statistician serving on the US EPA Science Advisory Board during the Carter administration.. He has written several books and articles on the epidemiological evidence demonstrating the health effects of low level radiation.. Ernest Sternglass Ph.. , Director and Chief Technical Officer of the RPHP Baby Teeth Study.. As Professor Emeritus of Radiological Physics at the University of Pittsburgh Medical school, Dr.. Sternglass has written numerous articles on the health effects of low level radiation and holds 13 patents for various radiation physics devices.. And then there is me Agnes Reynolds, Mom to Michelle and Jon, Wife of Gilbert.. As a nurse and mother of a child with cancer, I understand the unique role we play in helping to establish links to causation.. I have submitted Jon's teeth for testing.. While I am so very grateful for the modern medicine, which has returned Jon to health, more work needs to be done in terms of prevention.. Many children continue to die from their cancers.. Childhood Cancer occurs one in 330 children by the age of 19.. 6 It is time we focus not just on our own lifestyles, but on the environment we live in.. It is time practitioners' step up to the plate and ask these difficult questions in attempt to establish databases which may someday point to that needle in the haystack.. Thanks to recent legislation related to endless work by Trust for America's Health , health and environmental databases will be connected and soon we can connect the dots but we need to ask the questions, explore the environments and not pretend causation doesn't exist or is beyond our reach.. We have the technology and we need to use it regardless of who or what the cause may be.. Funding needs to be dedicated for this purpose as causation and cure will go hand and hand.. Do we as practitioners really go above and beyond to explore the potential exposures of these children? We must demand tighter regulations on clean air, water, soil and energy from our government.. Polluting industries must pay for their insults to our world and our children.. My fellow nurses.. Can you help us too? Baby teeth from children with cancer are needed for study we need to take a stand and help support important research which will create the foundation for further study.. We need to actively embrace prevention and educate our patients with regard to environmental exposures involved in cancer causation.. We cannot be silent any longer.. or it may just be a Silent Spring!.. Yes, Life IS GOOD!.. And I still pray.. please God, I just want to be a mother.. (I know I was heard!).. Agnes Reynolds RNC.. Descriptive info: Dear Parents:.. I am writing you as someone concerned that high cancer rates may be influenced by radioactive emissions from nuclear power plants.. I became personally involved with this issue after meeting families in Long Island, New York, whose children had developed and, in some cases, died from rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of cancer - a cancer whose cause has been linked to radiation exposure.. These families are living at "ground zero" of America's cancer epidemic.. For them, the American dream has become a nightmare.. I am a native of Long Island, which has a breast cancer rate so high that federal researchers have invested millions of dollars to find a cause.. Each year, over 2000 Long Island women are diagnosed with this dreaded condition.. My mother, who lives in Long Island, is a  ...   into the body, or whether it is harmful.. To document a possible radiation/cancer connection, the Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP) needs only one of the baby teeth that your child has lost.. RPHP is collecting baby teeth as part of a national, scientific study to measure levels of radioactive Strontium-90 in these teeth.. So please help.. Every tooth is a clue!.. I know that cancer is an overwhelming issue to confront.. Yet, we have already spent $25 billion on a "War on Cancer" without any significant decline in America's cancer rates.. It is only through public education, supported by solid scientific research, that we will be able to create a safe environment and healthy future for our children.. Thank you in advance for supporting the "Tooth Fairy Project.. ".. Yours sincerely,.. Alec Baldwin..
