Descriptive info: Research Projects involve documenting and mapping buildings, neighbourhoods and precincts in the city.. Each UDRI project is a balance of archival research, fieldwork and documentation, often leading to institutional collaborations and publication.. While UDRI research studies aim to enrich the vocabulary of yousng professionals and students, our applied research projects have been designed to address the shortcomings of existing legislation, the insufficiency of civic infrastructure, and the pressing need to recover the city's open spaces and restore its built fabric.. In this way almost every UDRI plan or recommendation has been a response to a significant threat posed to our city.. Additionally each solution we have prescribed has been shaped by our assessment of its suitability and viability.. RESEARCH INITIATIVE.. We regard the protection of Mumbai's natural and built environment as the basis of our effort to improve the quality of life in the city.. This approach has guided every UDRI initiative over the past ten years.. While the primary objective of our investigative work has been to develop the insight and vocabulary of city based design, planning and conservation professionals, our recommendations have consistently been oriented towards application and participatory implementation.. CONSERVATION SOLUTIONS.. Through the documentation of individual historic structures or the mapping of entire neighbourhoods, UDRI has enabled the successful identification, conservation and management of the city's heritage.. RESEARCH STUDIES.. Differentiated from our applied research projects, these initiatives are typically speculative and are intended to stimulate the city's design community.. These investigations commissioned by UDRI often inform the analysis of other projects or even lead to a more sustainable pattern of use of existing city  ...   aim to provide young scholars, researchers and independent practitioners the opportunity to do research on contemporary urban issues and concerns of Mumbai..
