  • Title: The Facets of Avalanche Awareness | Wasatch Backcountry Rescue
Descriptive info: The Facets of Avalanche Awareness.. Blog Home.. Over the course of the past weekend I took my Avalanche 1 course through the.. American Avalanche Institute.. My course was held in.. Alta, Utah.. , and run by Sarah Carpenter, one of AAI s co-owners, with the help of Pete Earl, a Professional Ski Patroller at.. Canyons.. resort in Park City, Utah.. The first day of the course began with morning classroom sessions, and presentations from both Sarah and Pete on snow science, crystal formation, and avalanche behavior.. Before we broke for lunch, we divided into two touring groups and began to discuss our plan for our full day tour the following day.. My group determined that the avalanche danger, while currently forecasted as moderate, would most likely climb to considerable over the next 12-24 hours, as the forecast was currently calling for 6-10 inches of fresh Utah powder.. Using AAI s Backcountry Skier s Checklist, we determined two potential avalanche causes- 1.. Persistent Slabs, and 2.. Wind Slabs.. The new snow forecasted would further complicate things, and thus we would proceed with caution.. Using the.. Utah Avalanche Center.. s forecast as our primary guidelines, we decided that we would classify North and NorthEast facing slopes between 36-37 degrees as Closed- things we would not be skiing under any terms, but that we might consider skiing something between 34-35 degrees, and that South facing slopes, and those less steep than 32 degrees would be Open, without contrary findings.. Later in the afternoon the class ventured outside and up the snowy hill behind.. Alta s Rustler Lodge.. to practice search and rescue techniques with our avalanche beacons.. We divided up into teams based on the types of beacons we each were practicing with.. I use a Tracker 2, and wound up in a group divided among Tracker and Pieps users.. We ran around in the snow, buried beacons and challenged our classmates to locate the signal, probe for a buried object, and then dig it up.. On the second day of the three day course, I met up with my classmates and our instructors at the.. Grizzly Gulch.. parking lot in Alta to begin our tour into the backcountry.. After doing a thorough beacon check in order to ensure we were all transmitting, and could receive each other s beacon signals, we began skinning up-hill.. After a few hours we stopped to dig a massive snowpit in a slope Pete thought would show a good representation of  ...   we re-evaluated our game plan, and determined that to reach our destination we would need to pass under potential avalanche terrain one member of the group at a time.. Once we all had made the pass, we discussed again the line we intended to ski, and went one at a time, meeting again in the cover of trees- a designated island of safety.. The skiing was fantastic, with tele skiers, fixed heelers, and split boarders alike making fresh powder turns, grins spread wide across our faces.. The third and final day of the course began with an early morning skin up Grizzly Gulch again, and was followed by additional snow stability tests.. In the afternoon we finished up with a review of what we d learned over the course, and Sarah and Pete were nice enough to go over a list of what s in their packs when they travel in the backcountry.. We went over a few useful acronyms developed by Ian McCammon, PhD, for staying safe in the backcountry including using FACETS to remember the human factors that can cloud judgement and decision making.. These include: Familiarity with the terrain, Acceptance within the group, Commitment to a goal, Expert halo, Tracks on a slope, and Scarcity (or seeking 1st tracks.. ) Also see McCammon s ALPTRUTH checklist below.. If you re interested in learning more about how Avalanche forecasters look at snow stability and snowpack I highly suggest you take an avalanche education course.. What fascinated me the most over the course of the weekend was not how much information I learned- but how much I realized I have yet to learn when it comes to snow science and avalanche behavior.. The.. Utah Avalanche Center.. also has a ton of information on their website, with current updates on snowpack, stability, conditions, and forecasts being added every day.. Last week I went on mountain with Snowbird Ski Patroller Ari Theodore to do some basic beacon locator drills and transceiver practice.. After locating two buried beacons I began to think about what the drill represented, what those thuds I had felt my probe striking were intended to represent.. Bodies.. As the reality of the drill sunk in I started thinking about all the unnecessary risks we take in our day to day lives, and how taking just one of those risks, making one tiny mistake in the backcountry could put actual human life in danger..
