Descriptive info: GROUP SHOWS:.. ARCHIVE.. INVITATIONALS:.. Claudia.. Kleefeld.. E X H I B I T I O N S.. Introduction.. WMG exhibits art made by and about women, educates the public about women's art, and advocates for the equal treatment and recognition of women's artistic accomplishments.. WMG provides a multifaceted space for women artists.. These women are not less advantaged in terms of their talent; they remain, however, disadvantaged in their access to exhibit their work in a professional, high-quality, committed space that provides the safety of artistic expression and recognizes the value of traditionally devalued art.. Our exhibit topics have ranged in themes from domestic violence and religious freedom to stylistic themes such as the still life and surrealism.. Woman Made Gallery had its first juried art exhibit in July 1992 titled "Women Do Women".. Nineteen artists depicted images and iconography of all things female.. Since then the gallery hosts on the average eight group exhibitions per year with approximately 30 artists per show and a wide variety of themes.. WMG has shown the work of more than 6500 women artists since 1992.. Current & Upcoming Exhibitions.. The following is a list, along with a brief description, of juried group shows that are currently on display, or those that we will be hosting in the coming months.. Janet Frazee Wade, Elizabeth Wallace, Nancy Youdelman.. About WCA:.. The Women’s Caucus for Art was founded in 1972  ...   DC, London and Central Illinois.. This unique multicultural upbringing is a source of inspiration for Suzanne.. She is particularly drawn to cultural patterns and human behavior in a variety of settings.. She explores the contemporary landscape, at times depicting it laced with organic and spiritual patterning.. In the pursuit of helping create a more peaceful world of coexistence, Suzanne is a part on One Spirit Learning Alliance in NYC.. Her study of Eastern and Western religions and indigenous spiritual practices also inform her work.. Suzanne holds an undergraduate (with a minor in art) and master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from the Virginia Tech and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign respectively.. She lives Champaign, Illinois with her husband and two children.. Robin Riggs.. has always been interested in food.. After spending a sabbatical year with her family in Rennes, France, she had the opportunity to experience a culture that views food in a different way than the United States.. As a result, she began exploring the American diet and our relationship to the food we buy in the average grocery store.. She is interested in how we make food choices based on the packaging, presentation and perceived benefits.. Her work of food pyramids and hybrid, created foods is a tongue and cheek look at distancing ourselves from all sources of natural food.. Robin holds a BA from Kenyon College and a MA from The Ohio State University.. She lives in Champaign, Illinois with an agricultural economist and their two teenagers.. About the Work.. Suzanne Keith Loechl and Robin Riggs.. both combine the themes of nature, either implied or absent, with de-natured aspects of American society.. Loechl does this through her observations of contemporary American space.. Riggs playfully examines the processed and packaged food culture.. Loechl believes the landscape and the built environment have evoked a sense of place and identity throughout history because they evolved within a local and regional framework.. But much of the contemporary landscape is made up of predictable architecture and land use design dominated by national chains and trends.. Drawing from her background as a landscape architect, she examines how people live, work and play in these environments.. She is especially curious about the psychological effects that these spaces have on the individual.. Riggs bases her work on America’s increasing disconnect from nature through what we eat.. Through her re-creation of the food pyramid and development of hybrid food types, she pokes fun at brightly colored, lusciously appealing food industry products.. While fresh fruits and vegetables are intentionally absent from Riggs images, she constantly questions how this new diet of artificial flavors and colors has become part of the collective subconscious.. Loechl and Riggs works complement one another because of their mutual interest in the human made culture, yet their explorations come from two uniquely different perspectives.. suzannekeithloechl.. and.. irenerobinriggs..
