Descriptive info: Eileen.. Downes.. The Streets and Alleys On Which We Search.. Andrea Witzke Slot.. Tuesday.. A shoe department.. A solitary day of searching,.. shopping, buying, returning.. It is late when she enters,.. past time to go home, and I am tired of not finding.. This woman elbows her way onto center stage: one woman.. in a heavy overcoat and oversized black shoes on this,.. the hottest day of summer.. She begins to shout loudly at herself.. At me.. At the mocking urgency of department-store needs.. We shoppers glance at one another, searching for clues, how to respond.. We pick up shoes and put them down again, absently, quietly.. Leave me alone, she shouts.. Don’t no one know what you do.. She shoves a ghost beside her, striking outward, tearing at her clothes.. Don’t you.. , she shouts, hitting the shoes on the  ...   of shoe.. So many choices—and now this.. The pretty woman behind the counter presses a phone to her ear.. Security guards materialize and grab the woman by the arms.. as she struggles to free herself.. , she shouts, twisting.. away from them.. They pull her arms behind her back.. Not here,.. she shouts, as they escort her through sunlit doors.. that open without effort.. , she shouts,.. her voice carried away from the places where we stand.. In her wake, we restart our searches.. We move up and down aisles,.. not daring to look into one another’s eyes, touching the well-designed heels.. like children skimming fingers along the edge of a pond.. I stop.. and stare at the door beyond and wonder.. What was she searching for?.. What are we searching for? What am I searching for?.. I hear her answer rebound..

On the green,.. Dads in baby-soft polos choose clubs.. Old Sleep Road slips behind the Club.. And ambles around a brand-new lake.. It crosses Sleep Street and rolls along.. A grocery-store village and a row.. Of high white condos.. I know how new.. Those condos smell, the PVC; I have tried.. Their doors and found them unlocked.. And I have accordioned open their foreign.. Refrigerators, leaning forward,.. Sniffing the single-serving packs of  ...   The immaculate landscape, and nobody sees.. But me.. It is either the middle of the night.. Or the middle of the day; at the all-nite.. Diner with ads on the radio, it is too bright.. To tell.. I order two slices of sleep.. With a side of fries.. My weary bones,.. Heavy lids, I can’t remember where in America.. I live.. I know it’s a box in some parish at.. The edge of a city, I think.. Come what hell.. You arrange for me, Officer, I will not go home,.. I hate it there.. All they do is sleep..

Descriptive info: Catherine.. Wiesener.. Fireflies.. for my fellow 60's children.. Mars Caulton.. Were it not their silent way.. flashing twilight signals where the grass has cooled.. and the air has caught its breath.. they wouldn't seem so magical.. Mom kept running tabs on Freedom's.. progress, TV flashing postcards from the heat.. and the  ...   barricades.. Saturdays were different then.. faces of new heros replacing warm milk.. and the children singing spirituals.. I struggled to learn the words to them.. Fireflies know when it's time,.. casting light on evil's roots.. And brave with Truth inside our wings.. No Hellman's jar can hold us now.. June 25, 2012..

Descriptive info: Phyllis.. Gillie Jaffe.. Getting away with love.. Cin Salach.. We are silently in love with our children.. I type that into the computer and he watches me.. Mama, did I write that?.. No but you inspired it.. When I kissed you and kissed you?.. Yes, then.. Mama I want to write a poem down about you, about the wisdom of you.. Did he really say that? Yes he did.. I am reading it at 8:30 pm at the end of a day in which I do not feel very wise.. A dear friend said to me after Leo was born that we are so lucky to be poets and.. mamas.. Because if we’re having a bad mama day, we could still have a good poet.. day.. And if we’re having a bad poet day, we could still have a good mama day.. I want the days I rock both.. Unlike today.. When nothing  ...   very convincing.. The way we fall says everything about our faith.. Leo falls like he’s flying.. Our friend Micah throws him up in the air.. and Leo leans into the air to make the fall even bigger.. Make it last even longer.. Throws his arms back and his chest out and exhales.. Ahhhhhh.. He never short changes the fall by worrying about who will catch him.. Look out mama, there are 25 volcanoes interrupting!.. (lava sound effect).. I breathe and fall.. I cry and fall.. I sleep and fall.. I love and fall.. I fall and fall.. Mama, the thing about me is that I can run through lava.. It’s easy.. I’ll show you how I do it, watch me mama, and then you can do it too.. The thing about me is that I follow directions well.. I run through the lava, laughing.. I don’t even get burned at all.. June 30, 2012..

Descriptive info: Caren Helene.. Rudman.. Sally Field.. from Genetics (Jackleg Press, 2012).. Maureen Seaton.. If I could be any actor it would be Sally Field.. If I could sleep with any actor.. it would be Queen Latifah.. Field reminds me a little of me if I.. weren't so phobic about flying.. Latifah, you might say, has become a.. famous femme in recent years—if you judge by the makeup and the.. glossy magazine spreads.. Still, the way she rapped in the old days.. And that.. Set It Off.. scene…The thing I like about Field is her seamless..  ...   two men in.. Norma Rae.. I've.. had trouble myself loving just one person over the years.. I could easily.. have three lovers at a time like a Mormon or a beach cat.. Latifah.. reminds me of the night one of my lovers dressed up as a femme fatale.. and sang me a torch song.. Not all butches can do that.. Some look like.. drag queens when they put on femme clothes.. Even with a.. construction hat and steel-toed boots I femme myself out.. That's.. where Sally Field and I have something else in common..
