Descriptive info: Silvana.. LaCreta Ravena.. Five by Seven Glossy.. Suzanne Frank.. A 5x7 glossy of Sophia Loren appears.. from time to time in your apartment.. She could be anywhere--on top of a stack.. of a dusty books, perilously close.. to the kitchen stove, curled on the window ledge.. Most recently, I found her drying on your porch.. after you rescued her from the basement flood,.. a cloudy veil of water stain from eyes to flaring nostrils,.. a ghost of blue ink across her high forehead from.. a grocery list.. She surfaces like a dog bone.. buried in the garden, the sudden white a  ...   nudity just outside the frame.. It's easy to see why you nearly swoon when you.. watch her movies--the torn peasant blouse falling.. off her shoulder, earthy smudge of dirt on her cheek.. I think you mean to throw her out someday,.. but just can't bring yourself to do it.. Can't abide the thought.. of Sophia buried under half eaten pizza and orange rind,.. Or worse found by a trash picker who pulls her out with.. his red chapped hand and tucks her inside his coat,.. and you would hear her call out to you, in Italian,.. to save her one more time..

They made their home along our pool's.. edges, settled down in the rock bed behind.. the morning glories.. It was a full life:.. afternoon swims in the man-made lake,.. a dinner of insects near the rhododendrons,.. a pink Michigan each evening.. Indian style in our tree fort, I  ...   female granted him her body.. Around her stiffened neck, his black tipped beak,.. bodies which understood the sky.. moved against the ground.. Absent of sound,.. she lied there, missing the clouds.. Just before the eggs came, our motion lights flashed.. on her speckled, brown form as she ripped.. the best feathers from her body to build a downy nest,.. while her iridescent lover watched from the shadows..

Since she has lived for so many years.. under house arrest.. she has had time to slip several words.. into each well-worn sleeve, both.. silk and cotton; into each bowl.. laid ready for the next meal.. She has kept.. her house clean, sweeping words.. that had been left out  ...   has had a lot to do-.. the news to listen to, because.. no one has been allowed to stop by.. for a cup of tea and the latest story;.. and the hours of meditation when she draws.. each word from its hiding place.. and sets it, a jewel, beside others in her mind.. Descriptive info: Britney Spears as Muse vs.. Britney Spears as Vessel.. From Caboose #7: Britney Spears 101.. Liz Mason.. 201.. Genevieve Koski wrote of Britney Spears' seventh studio album.. Femme Fatale.. in.. The Onion.. (March 29, 2011) "Spears isn't an artist; she's a muse, a vessel top hitmakers use to channel their best work.. " I agree.. And I like that the words 'muse' and 'vessel' are used in the same sentence because it's a nice juxtaposition; the idea of Britney as muse has a more magical quality, and the idea of Britney as a vessel has a more robotic quality, a sort of ghost-in-the-shell feel.. Britney Spears has been on the scene for quite a while now, so having recorded and released such a huge amount of material, she's bound to be interpreted in a variety of ways, but I think Britney Spears is a little of both muse and vessel, and that makes her more compelling.. The Britney as vessel idea is intriguing to me because it implies she's 'empty' inside, which is sometimes exactly what critics (and I mean critics in the loosest sense -- people criticizing her) say about her, just as Pete Samson recalls in.. The Sun.. on April 1st, 2011:.. "She [Britney] was blasted for obviously miming and barely dancing during the performance in San Francisco.. A San Francisco paper blasted her 'awkward dance moves' and 'dead-eyed stare.. '".. I heard the same thing about her 'dead eyes' on an episode of the podcast.. Gay Pimpin' with Jonny McGovern.. about her performance on.. Good Morning America.. My personal opinion of that performance was that the use of props was cheesy, and that it looked like an early draft of a choreographed routine that was still in the creation process.. In fact, I learned later that they were still in the process of rehearsals for the Femme Fatale Tour, so I speculated that maybe that particular performance was a dress rehearsal.. If you consider Britney Spears a 'vessel,' you might picture a 'blank slate,' open to being programmed.. Perhaps then, it is not so surprising that there are Britney conspiracy theories floating around on the internet.. A common trope is Britney and trauma-based CIA MK Ultra Monarch Mind-control programming.. This programming is used to create humans who are totally controlled by a 'handler' without even knowing that they are being controlled.. Frequently there are shades of Illuminati theories tucked in there too.. Vigilantcitizen.. com lays out an entertaining case for Britney as a victim of Illuminati mind control and expertly deconstructs her Hold It Against Me video (from the.. album) to illustrate the point.. I say 'expertly,' yes, but that doesn't mean I actually believe it, because I don't.. I just mean the piece is really well-written, with an introduction and conclusion paragraph, supporting points illustrated with detailed examples -- I mean, if I was a teacher, I would have given that paper an A+.. Then there's all the videos in varying degrees of production value on the web that take random moments of Britney caught on video or film out of context, and then they edit them together to build a case for something crazy.. One I watched, was Britney switching into an English accent while shouting at the photographers to leave her alone, suggesting she has a dissassocitive multiple personality disorder, which in turn is a result of trauma from CIA-Monarch Sex Kitten programming.. (In actuality, she has some British family on one side of her family, and there has been some speculation that that was why she named her yorkie England -- am I creeping you out that I know this and that I'm even sharing this information?) There's also been speculation that Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where Britney was on lockdown some years back, is a mind-control programming facility.. These  ...   of as a performer is made up of songwriters, a manager, publicist and all that.. My guess would be that most of the public agrees with Caramanica.. I would like to suggest that the idea of a pop star's malleability is a notion that lends itself to fan science-fiction.. I love the idea of Britney not really being a real person but a composite of units that make up this THING that goes by the name Britney Spears.. This notion is compelling, in a sort of Hebraic homunculus-golem-robot kind of a way, the robot being key since sometimes Britney sounds kind of babydoll roboty.. And since science-fiction is a genre that its best pieces often say something universal about the human experience, a robot pop star covers a lot of pithy territory.. Interested? See me after class.. On a marketing level, that's were the vessel stuff is; Britney's work pimps her own merchandise like perfume and clothes as well as merchandise of other sponsors, but she also functions as an advertising vessel for new songwriters, DJs, producers, rappers who have some sort of a la carte involvement in her songs.. Sometimes new artists even say their name in Britney's songs that they're guesting in, like Sabi does on Britney's track '(Drop Dead) Beautiful.. ' As a listener, I feel like saying your name in a song is kind of cheesy.. I think of it in the same way as when a visual artist makes a really good painting or drawing but then totally ruins it with a fat huge signature.. Put that shit on the back.. I just want to say:.. Really? You're really that concerned someone's going to steal your work and claim it's your own? Really? You need to put a copyright symbol on it? Really?.. I don't think that we need to consider Britney a vessel OR a muse; I think she could be both a vessel AND a muse.. Kei$ha admitted that she wrote 'Till The World Ends' for Britney.. Because Britney inspired the song, she is in effect, serving as a muse.. And yet at the same time, Britney performing this song is advertising for Kei$ha as a songwriter, and of course there are royalties in effect, to be sure.. Britney does function as a vessel of sorts.. We might take the sting out of the connotation that comes with the word 'vessel' by substituting 'vehicle.. ' Just throwing that in there to help the medicine go down.. When Britney is dancing and singing, that's the muse part.. Not much explanation required really.. I mean, that's why I made this zine.. I'm a fan.. But also, just as any good friend will be honest with you when you ask for their honest opinion, I am not there to always love all of the entertainment offered by the Britney Spears Military Complex.. I like to think that if this were a situation between friends, I would be honest in my response.. I say this because I like Britney's work but I am critical of certain aspects of it.. I don't necessarily like every single song of hers.. And it's not like I'm some deranged fan who thinks that I'm actually friends with her.. I've never even met her.. She's never heard of me.. And that's OK.. Come to think of it, I think I would only want to meet her when she's older and has a career to look back on, when she's many, many, many years older.. Retrospect is probably more interesting than the opinion you have when you're going through whatever it is that you're going through, good or bad.. Muse, vessel, whatever you want to call it, sometimes those terms can be two sides of the same conspiracy coin currency.. More info here: lizsmasoniclodge.. blogspot.. com.. Nov.. 10, 2011..
