    Descriptive info: Become A Volunteer.. Tutors are the heart of the Yarmouth Learning Network.. We are always looking for responsible, committed people to help us fulfill our mission of teaching reading, writing and math skills to Yarmouth County adults so they can achieve financial independence, good health and greater involvement in community life.. In 2010, we helped many learners reach over functional literacy goals.. This was made possible, in part, through the countless hours given by our trusted volunteer tutors!.. Do You Want to Make a Difference in Someone’s Life?.. There are many ways to get involved at the Yarmouth Learning Network.. Whether.. you become a tutor or help behind the scenes, volunteer once a week or once a.. year, share your expertise or learn new skills, you find ways to contribute toward.. the goal of increasing adult literacy rates in Yarmouth County.. If you would like to become a volunteer tutor for the Learning Network, please.. contact us or give us a call @ (902) 742-8151..  ...   together a minimum of two hours a week.. Some tutors are able to work for longer periods of time each week depending on the goals of the learner.. Tutors meet with students in the learner's home; others meet in a library or other public place, such as The Learning Network facilities.. We work to find the best tutor to meet your needs.. We encourage tutors and learners to sign a contract together.. In the contract, both tutor and learner agree to work together for six months and to come to all lessons on time.. Tutors try to teach the reading and writing skills.. that a learner wants in order to reach their goals, such as passing.. the GED or learning to read simple texts..     Descriptive info: Learning Programs.. Funded through the Nova Scotia School of Adult Learning (NSSAL), the Yarmouth Learning Network offers individual tutoring and Levels 1, 2 programs FREE of charge to all interested adult learners.. Learners can enter into programs of study at any time throughout the school year and work at their own pace.. We offer small class sizes and/or individual instruction.. All adult learners are assessed to determine placement in the program that is right for them.. All levels class instructors are qualified instructors who follow course material and outcomes prescribed by the Nova Scotia School of Adult Learning (NSSAL).. To enrol in a learning program,.. today!.. Completion of Levels 1 2 through the Yarmouth Learning Network.. and achievement of Levels 3 4 through the Nova Scotia Community.. College earns a Nova Scotia High School Diploma for Adults.. Level One.. Offered at the Yarmouth, Shelburne Barrington Learning Networks, this classroom program runs Monday to Friday 8:30 to 3:30 pm.. This introductory level course concentrates on  ...   learners to basic.. communication skills, , social studies, science, human relations, workplace preparation, and computer skills.. As well the program continues to build math and language arts proficiency.. GED Preparatory.. The GED was established in 1942 and is recognized throughout Canada and the United States.. GED testing is for adults who left high school without a diploma.. Adult learners who take and pass the GED earn a Nova Scotia High School Equivalency Certificate.. The Yarmouth and Barrington Learning Network’s are pleased to provide General Educational Development (GED) training, support and testing assistance.. GED preparation is normally part of an evening classroom program which runs three nights per week from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.. However, GED instructors are flexible and can accommodate daytime GED participants when requested..     Descriptive info: English as a Second Language (ESL).. Yarmouth County has many residents who speak a language other than English in the home.. The inability to communicate fluently in English can create difficulties with employers, police, and local residents.. Grocery shopping, mailing a letter, or seeing a doctor can be extremely difficult if you don’t speak the English.. Language.. In addition to one-to-one ESL tutoring, the Yarmouth Learning Network holds small group classes for English language learners.. Most beginning lessons focus on “survival” English and managing life in a new community.. As learners improve their skills, adult English students guide the lessons to topics of importance to them, such as employment or citizenship goals.. Math.. Job applications resumes.. Citizenship..
