Descriptive info: We Remember.. Israel Which I Love.. A Message in English.. A Greeting in Hebrew.. Yoram Tahar Lev : Prize of Israel.. Xu Xin:.. A Renewed Beginning.. הקמת המדינה היתה כמו בריאת העולם בשבילי.. Founding the State of Israel was like the Creation of the World for Me.. מתוך ראיון עם זאב שטרנהל ע י ארי שביט, הארץ 7.. 3.. 2008.. From an interview with Ze'ev Sternhell.. English:.. http://www.. haaretz.. com/hasen/spages/961668.. html.. שתת הדם הראשון במוחו ניבא את מה שיבוא עליו, וכל אדם מפוקח הבין כי מלאך המוות כבר אורב לו  ...   a computer sciences student in the Hebron Polytechnic, also boarded the bus and blew himself up.. Of the 17 people killed, nine were schoolchildren aged 18 or younger.. Asaf was killed on the spot.. I.. went to see Paradise Now to try to understand what message it was trying to convey.. Was it that the murderer is human and is as deserving of sympathy as his victims? He is not.. Was it that he has doubts? He has none.. After all, he is so sure of his mission that he is willing to kill himself along with his human targets.. O.. r maybe, I wondered, the film was trying to give the message that it is the Israelis who are to blame for this horrific act, for the phenomenon of suicide bombing.. In that case, are the Israelis also to blame for the similar terrorist attacks on New York City's World Trade Center, the Bali nightclub, the Amman hotels, the shop in Turkey, the restaurant in Morocco the underground stations in London, the trains in Spain and so many others?.. What exactly makes Paradise Now worthy of such a prestigious award? Would the entertainment writers who chose to honor this movie have given the same accolades if the film had been been about the young men from Saudi Arabia who moved to the U.. S.. , took flying lessons and then underwent Islamic ritual preparations for their holy mission to crash airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon? Would they have dared to give such a version of Paradise Now a similar award?.. his movie attempts to deliver the message that suicide bombings are a legitimate tactic for those who feel they've exhausted all other means of resistance.. But a suicide-murderer who boards a bus and snuffs out the lives of 15 or 20 innocent people, or who walks into a city carrying a biological, chemical or nuclear weapon and kills 10,000, or even 100,000 people, is that still a legitimate tactic? Where does one draw the line?.. he world should draw the line at one person.. My son was almost 17; he loved surfing, he loved pop music.. He is now gone because a suicide bomber decided that blowing himself up on a crowded bus filled with children was somehow a legitimate act.. A.. warding a movie such as Paradise Now only implicates the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in the evil chain of terror that attempts to justify these horrific acts, whether the number of victims is 17 or 17,000.. Written by anonymous, sent as chain email in the internet, translated by Ada Holtzman.. he least we can do for the one who scarified his life in such heroic way is to tell his story.. It is not clear why the media repressed the story or even hid it.. Perhaps it not popular behavior, perhaps it does not match the image of the suffering, sensitive and hesitant soldier that someone is trying to nurture.. There is no explanation to hide such an amazing story of heroism – why it isn't told aloud, everywhere, with pride, gratitude, admiration, tears.. So we shall tell it ourselves.. Major Roi Klein of blessed memory, Assistant Commander of the 51st battalion of Golani, from the settlement of Ali, was the soldier with the highest rank among his fighters in the battles in the town Bin Jubeil.. In the middle of the battle he noticed a grenade thrown at his soldiers.. Since one could no longer defend himself from the grenade blowing up, he threw himself on it so that his body would be a living shield and thus save his soldiers from certain death.. The soldiers who survived testified that he cried SHEMA ISRAEL while jumping on the grenade.. Roi Klein, a mythical hero, in the period of worshipping the anti-hero, was buried on his 31st birthday.. It was told that he was a gifted saxophone player and brilliant scholar, who graduated from his engineering studies with distinction.. He toured Africa with friends, had a rolling laughter, and all his acquaintances describe him as a gentle and modest man.. The only wish of his widow is that his children will be like their father.. Racheli.. ' '.. ynet.. ' , ( -.. ) ( -.. ).. , , , , , ,.. , ' '.. : , , ,.. , , , ,.. , , , , ,.. , , - ,.. , , , , : , ?.. YNET 14.. 2006.. U.. ri Grossman, 20, died after an anti-tank missile hit his tank in southern Lebanon Saturday.. His name was cleared for publication Sunday evening.. A statement issued by the family read: Uri Grossman was born on August 27, 1985.. He was supposed to celebrate his 21st birthday in two weeks.. Uri studied at the experimental school in Jerusalem.. He reached the armored corps and fulfilled his aspiration to be a tank commander.. He was about to be released (from the army) in November, travel the world, and then study theater.. Friday evening he spoke, from Lebanon, with his parents and sister.. He was glad that a decision on a ceasefire was taken.. Uri promised that he will be eating the next Shabbat dinner at home.. Uri, son to David and Michal and brother to Yonatan and Ruthie, had a fabulous sense of humor and a big soul filled with life and emotion.. The three authors initially expressed unequivocal support for a military act of self-defense at the outbreak of the war, but later changed their position in the face of the cabinet's decision to expend operations in Lebanon.. Grossman himself argued that Israel already exhausted its self-defense right.. The argument that an Israeli presence on the Litani (River) would prevent the firing of missiles on Israel is an illusion.. Even the argument that we mustn't give Hizbullah a sense of security has been irrelevant for a long time.. Hizbullah wishes to see us sink deeper into the Lebanese swamp, Grossman said.. He also joined, along with Meretz and Peace Now, left-wing protesters who demonstrated against the war and called on the defense minister and government to halt military operations.. Now we must look three steps ahead and not to the regular direction, not to the familiar, instinctive reaction of the Israeli way of fighting – that is, what doesn't work with force will work with much more force, Grossman said.. Force, in this case, will fan the flames of hatred to Israel in the region and the entire world, and may even, heaven forbid, create the situation that will bring upon us the next war and push the Middle east to an all-out, regional war.. Turning his attention to a cease-fire deal, Grossman said: Had they proposed to us (Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad) Siniora's agreement a month ago, wouldn't we have received it gladly and with cries of joy? We won't receive a better offer than this, even after we pulverize the rest of Lebanon and ourselves.. Such an agreement is the victory Israel wants, Grossman added.. Leaders must recognize the moment where they can get the maximum achievements for their people.. Out of concern to the future of the State of Israel, to our place here, to our relations with our neighbors, and to our deterrence power that is being eroded by the day, stop the fighting and give negotiations a chance.. Turning his attention to the fact the current war is being led by civilian politicians and not former generals, Grossman said: … the hope was that a civilian government would turn to different ways of action.. It turns out there's a sort of coercion of surrender to the logic of force once it's in your hands.. The government decision repeats the Israeli behavioral pattern to the point it appears our leaders are destined to act like this.. Referring to the ruling Kadima party, Grossman said: Kadima is an internal transaction between the anxieties of the centrist Left and the centrist Right.. Its connection (Kadima's) to reality is slight and that's the reason that time and again we're surprised.. I think that the temptation to adopt the way of force is a default option.. I think a little modesty in the Middle East wouldn't hurt us and I hope that the fact we're being exposed to the limits of our power these days would lead us to act modestly, Grossman added.. There's no chance for dialogue with Hizbullah, but there's certainly a chance with the Lebanese government and with Syria.. Maybe it's worthwhile for us, for a change, not to break their arm during negotiations, but rather, engage in genuine dialogue, Grossman said.. This is a weapon we haven't used yet, and when an enemy turns to an enemy out of respect for the other's anxieties, it could have an immense impact.. Eetta Prince G.. ibson.. The Failure to Keep Our Children Safe.. The Jerusalem Post 16.. When our children were young, I read them David Grossman's delightful book, Uri's Special Language.. My children loved it and I loved reading it to them.. The book helped me believe that I, raising young children through the first Gulf War and the Intifada, could understand their needs and keep them safe.. Uri Grossman, that same young child with his own special language, was killed on Saturday by an antitank missile.. He was buried Tuesday night.. And as the procession of funerals continues, I realize that our generation has failed at one of our most basic tasks: We, a collective generation of parents, have failed to keep our children safe.. We thought we could.. We, the generation now in our '50s, fought in the Yom Kippur War, the Litani Campaign and the 1982 Lebanon War.. By the time we were soldiers, we knew that our parents couldn't keep us safe.. They were displaced refugees or native-born Israelis overburdened by the responsibility of state-building.. They had little time for self-reflection and little ability for cynical scrutiny.. We, on the other hand, were free and proud Jews and Israelis.. Hebrew came naturally to us; Jewish culture was woven into our social fabric and we had honed our political identities after the Six Day War in Sinai and in Lebanon.. We, we thought, could see clearly and we would use our collective political clout.. We would demonstrate, demand, establish extra-parliamentary movements, and strive to make things better.. And we would do so without falling prey to simplistic messianic autism or knee-jerk, left-wing self-hatred.. We would hold on to complexity, recognizing that there are no simple answers here.. We would always remember that not all wars are the same and, when the time came, we'd know that this one is different.. We would never allow ourselves to be captivated by vacuous demagogic statements about sacrifices for the future.. We, who sacrificed our present, know that young people who die as heroes don't ever have the chance to live the normal, peaceful, unheroic lives that they deserved.. David Grossman gave expression to many of our most sacred hopes.. In.. Be My Knife.. , Grossman's character writes, I once thought of teaching my son a private language, isolating him from the speaking world on purpose, lying to him from the movement of his birth so he would believe only in the language I gave him.. And it would be a compassionate language.. What I mean is, I wanted to take him by the hand and name everything he saw with words that would save him from the inevitable heartaches so that he wouldn't be able to comprehend the existence of, for instance, war.. Or that people kill, or that this red here is blood.. I love to imagine him crossing through life with an innocent trusting smile - the first enlightened child.. No, we thought, we would teach compassion and enlightenment - in this world, on our streets, in Hebrew.. In the early days of the war, David Grossman went North with Meir Shalev and illustrator Yossi Abulafia and read books to frightened, traumatized children in bomb shelters.. As a cohort, we have made money, built careers, and even provided our children with options for the future.. Despite it all, we refused to allow our inner and outer lives to be consumed or confiscated by the collective pain.. We continued to wear jeans and we logged on into cyberspace as quickly as telecommunications developed.. We encouraged our children to do things that our parents disapproved of.. We're so cool we even embarrassed our children when we took them with us to demonstrations and vigils that they really didn't understand.. In Death as a Way of Life, Grossman wrote that writing is on the wall in three languages: Hebrew, Arabic, and Death.. We believed, first naively and later politically, that there is another language: the language of Sanity.. But that language has not kept our children safe.. We who believed in Jewish normality have not been able to protect them from the wicked who still seek to destroy us.. Neither have we been able to save them from our own nation's grandiosity, arrogance and shortsightedness.. We have not brought an end to the Occupation and we have not been able to build a caring, just and inclusive society.. Our children, already or soon to be in the army, are too smart and too mature for delightful children's books and carefree promises.. These are the children who grew up in the Intifada, who watched their friends blow up in buses and they know that too many little Uris grow up to be soldiers who die.. I can offer my apologies for my failures, but I want to offer more.. I offer them our collective wisdom, wizened and maybe even slightly jaded.. I promise to hold on to complexity, even if simplicity is more comforting.. I promise to love them.. I promise to love this country and this land.. And I promise to never stop trying to make this land safe and just.. Israel at War: 157 Dead (Ynetnews) 24.. The List of the IDF Soldiers Fallen in Battle and Civilians -.. A View from the Eye of the Storm – Terror and Reason in the Middle East.. By Prof.. Haim Harari.. An introduction, written in AUGUST 2006, to the Italian edition of the book.. The original book was published in English in April 2005.. By ReganBooks/HarperCollins (N.. ear Europe,.. There is a tiny holy land in the Middle East, which has largely been the cradle of your moral values, ethics and religion, and which has always been in the eye of the storm.. The darkest stains in your history, but also some of your greatest intellectual giants, relate to the people originating from this land.. As a true friend, familiar with your continent and with your culture, please allow me to address you with a mélange of experience, passion and hope: Experience acquired by my family, which has lived in the eye of the storm since the days when Giuseppe Garibaldi was a child; passion of someone who believes that Western Civilization has much to offer to the world and that Israel has a lot to offer to its neighbors; hope of an eternal optimist, who knows that you and we will prevail, but prefers that it happens sooner, rather than later.. Dear Europe, when you are sick, a denial syndrome can be dangerous, even deadly.. To ignore the symptoms of a serious illness, in spite of its rapid spread and progress, can kill anyone.. Early detection and resolute treatment can save your life, as well as the lives of others who might be infected.. In the name of Western Civilization: Do not wait any more.. Open your eyes.. Wake up!.. Are you waiting until traveling by air can be done only in underwear and being tied to your seat, because of new sickening terrorist plots? Are the new habits of searching your luggage, removing your shoes, denying you hand luggage, forbidding fluids and waiting hours in security lines not enough? Are you waiting until fanatics will explode themselves simultaneously in the crowded check-in areas of ten different European airports, in the peak summer travel season, killing thousands of people? Are you waiting for the Iranian embassy to bring rockets in their diplomatic mail, hide them literally under the beds of some of your Muslim citizens and start shelling your cities from the backyards of predominantly Muslim neighborhoods, or from mosques, as they do in Gaza and in Lebanon? Are you waiting until you will have to enclose terrorist infested neighborhoods in your cities and countries by high separating walls? What more should happen before you wake up?.. And if you think that I am hysterical, please take note: when my book predicted suicide murders in Europe, before the July 2005 atrocities in London, some of my European friends thought I was hysterical.. They were wrong.. The London suicide murders did happen.. When I described, in the book, a hypothetical story about a man wearing a coat in a hot summer day, being killed by security guards because he might be wearing a suicide belt, some of my readers believed I was crazy.. But a few months later, an innocent Brazilian was killed in London in exactly such an incident.. When I complained about fabricated media pictures, I was labeled as being biased, but now we have clear evidence of the Reuters phony photos and of theatrical staged parades of dead bodies of children in front of media photographers in both Gaza and Lebanon.. When I wrote that free democratic elections in an incited and uneducated society, with no free press and no judicial system, can only lead to a victory of the worst fanatic and murderous elements, I was told that we should believe in democracy , only to see, later, the Palestinian Hamas victory and the gains of the Muslim brothers in the Egyptian election.. When I talked about sending rockets from a Paris Muslim neighborhood into the Louvre, I was considered out of touch with reality.. Indeed, this has not yet happened.. But hundreds of cars were burned in the streets of Paris since then and the rockets will arrive, probably via the Iranian or Syrian embassy.. Perhaps it will first happen in Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Rome or London and not necessarily in Paris.. But any way you look at it, I am not hysterical.. We watch a terrorist army acquiring more than ten thousand deadly rockets in the sovereign country of Lebanon (did I say sovereign ?), which pretends that this army does not exist, while two ministers representing this non-existing army, are members of the Lebanese cabinet.. Terrorist groups of this army travel freely through the Lebanese-Syrian border checkpoints, back and forth, to and from their training camps in Iran.. Naturally, the Lebanese government neither destroys the private army nor asks the international community for help in dismantling it.. This army is fully funded and armed by two other sovereign countries, members of the United Nations, still maintaining elaborate commercial and diplomatic relations with all European countries.. But the private army is not declared by Europe to be a terrorist organization and Europe claims not to have clear evidence that Iran and Syria are financing and supplying the terrorists.. Perhaps aliens from another planet finance them.. Perhaps the flourishing drug business of the Hizbullah manufactures the rockets as a spin-off.. Europe has no proof , say its foreign policy spokespersons.. Dear Europe, you see no evil, hear no evil, but you definitely speak evil.. What more should happen before you wake up?.. The ten thousand rockets are known to be so inaccurate that they usually miss entire cities.. Not only they cannot be aimed at a specific building or facility, they cannot be aimed even at a specific town.. They are aimed at the Jewish town of Carmiel in the Galilee and often hit the Arab Israeli town of Majdal-Curum, kilometers away.. They are aimed at an Israeli military airfield and kill Israeli Arabs in Nazareth.. They are aimed at the large city of Haifa and most of the time hit the sea or empty fields outside the city.. Israel is so small that some of the rockets fly over Israel and fall in the northern tip of the West Bank.. However, five percent of these thousands of rockets do hit inhabited areas and some of them kill children and elderly people, Jewish and Arab.. There cannot be the slightest doubt that this vast array of rockets can only be intended to deliberately and indiscriminately kill civilians.. No one is pretending otherwise.. But Europe thinks that there is no evidence that this is a terrorist organization.. Will 100,000 rockets convince you, dear Europe? Perhaps a million? What more should happen before you wake up?.. In the first week of the Lebanon war in the summer of 2006, Hizbullah murdered a Jewish grandmother and her five-year old grandson, by one of its rockets.. Nothing unusual about that.. After all, this is the declared purpose of the existence of the Hizbullah.. It is called resistance.. Indeed, a fierce resistance to the existence of Jews in the world.. But two days later the Hizbullah rockets accidentally murdered two little Israeli Arab boys, a few kilometers away from the same spot.. The leader of Hizbullah went on Television and apologized for killing the Arab little boys, declaring them to be martyrs.. The other children were Jewish, hence a legitimate target.. And Europe still claims to have no evidence that the Iranian controlled Hizbullah is a terrorist organization.. After all, the president of Iran denies the holocaust, recommends the destruction of Israel and his Hizbullah Bullies destroyed the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires.. Are they anti-Semitic? Not at all, only anti Israeli.. Dear Europe, you do know whether the holocaust happened or not, don't you? How can you accept that a UN member nation calls explicitly for a second holocaust? Where is your voice and, especially, where is your action? What more should happen before you wake up?.. Hizbullah and Hamas operatives dig dead bodies from their graves and parade them in well staged theatrical productions in front of video and still photographers of the western media.. The pictures appear everywhere, some staged and some digitally forged, electronically modified.. Children toys, mysteriously always in bright colors and very clean, are accidentally found in the midst of the messy and dirty rubble of destroyed Hizbullah buildings and are photographed repeatedly by international media teams.. Who would have guessed that Hizbullah facilities contain such sweet teddy bears? But they do! CNN, BBC and other TV crews run through the rubble of the Hizbullah headquarters in Beirut, led openly by a Hizbullah PR director, and always accidentally find the same neat photo album of the same happy family with children in the midst of the dirty rubble.. Zoom in.. Close up.. Applause.. Thank you very much.. Senior CNN correspondents admit explicitly that they are showing to the public only what the Hizbullah wants them to show, but their confessions are aired only on CNN in the US and not on CNN in Europe.. Israel withdraws fully from the Gaza strip, only to absorb a constant barrage of primitive rockets aimed at (you know it by now) civilian towns in Israel (referred to as occupied Palestine by the President of Iran and the leaders of Hizbullah and Hamas).. Israel fully withdraws, with UN blessing, from Lebanon, and for six years is, on and off, being attacked by the Hizbullah resistance organization (indeed, resistance to anything the civilized world believes in).. Damascus is hosting the leader of the Hamas and providing airport and shipping services to Hizbullah.. European ambassadors happily sit there and watch.. And when the Americans, in their own clumsy powerful way, try to do something about it, not always in a clever way, not always effectively, the old European Far Left and the European Neo-Fascists join, as always, in a combined anti American and anti Semitic chorus.. Thousands of Iraqis are murdered by other Muslims and hundreds of thousands of Sudanese are slaughtered by Arabs in Darfur, but Europe is up in arms about one thousand dead Lebanese, half of whom are Hizbullah terrorists.. It is not the dead people who matter to Europe.. It is who killed them.. If it is other Muslims, send it to page 10.. If it is Israel, in self-defense, it is a front page war crime.. Call the UN for an emergency session! One day, thirty Iraqis are murdered in Shiite Najaf by a Sunni suicide murderer.. The next day, dozens of Iraqis are shot in the streets of a Sunni neighborhood in Baghdad by Shiites.. And some Europeans still believe that this is done against the Americans, or by the Americans, or that it has anything to do with Israel! Wouldn't they try to kill Americans, if this would be the purpose? For every American killed in Iraq, there are hundreds of Iraqis senselessly murdered by other Iraqis.. For every attempt to hurt the Americans, there are dozens of attacks on innocent Iraqis.. Who is funding them? Who provides weapons, explosives, reconnaissance and intelligence? Not the poor hungry Iraqis.. Who finances the Shiite murderers in Iraq, so close to the Iranian border? Who is funding the Sunni murderers in Iraq? I do not know.. But I have no doubt that European intelligence services do know.. I do know that the Sunni Palestinian Islamic Jihad is fully paid by the Shiite Hizbullah and I know who pays the Hizbullah.. But the French foreign minister visits Beirut and states that Iran is playing a constructive role and Mr.. Prodi asks for help from Iran.. A misguided, but idealistic, young Italian decides to spend his vacation by arranging a summer camp for Palestinian children in East Jerusalem.. He is stabbed to death by a Palestinian terrorist (or resistance fighter , you can choose your words) in the middle of the street.. Medical and social volunteers, who try to help Iraqis, are kidnapped and beheaded.. Money contributed in Europe for earthquake relief in Pakistan is used to finance the latest suicide plot against flights from the UK to the US.. Israel withdraws from Gaza and leaves intact greenhouses that could provide employment to numerous unemployed Palestinians.. The greenhouses are destroyed, under the supervision of the Hamas and their metal parts are sold as scrap metal or used as raw material for more primitive rockets.. The greenhouse area becomes a launching pad for rockets into Israeli villages.. After all, they get a better salary for trying to kill Israelis than for growing strawberries and flowers.. And the EU tries to find ways of sending money to these people.. Perhaps the so called international human rights organizations should react? Oh, yes, they do, by one proclamation after another, denouncing Israel.. The secretary general of the UN is critical of Israel, both in Gaza and in Lebanon.. Not one word about thousands of rockets deliberately sent from both areas towards Israeli civilians, when Israel is not occupying one centimeter of their land.. The brand new Human Rights Council , the new improved version of the old UN Human Rights Commission (yes, the revised version of the grotesque body previously chaired by Libya) is calling an emergency meeting in order to condemn Israel in the Lebanese context.. This Council represents a great new chance for the United Nations, and for humanity, to renew the struggle for human rights says the UN leadership.. But in the long six-week (repeat: six weeks) history of this new council, this is already the second extraordinary emergency session.. The first session was called in order to denounce Israel in connection with the Palestinian terror.. Did I hear anyone in Europe protesting? Did Europe announce that it will have nothing to do with this farce at the Human Rights Council ? Why do we hear about EU financial humanitarian aid for the Lebanese and not for the Israeli civilians whose houses and schools were destroyed by the terrorists? Perhaps we are still waiting for the proof that these are terrorists.. Evenhanded Europe, can you please explain why Lebanese civilians are dearer to you than Israelis? Perhaps, the argument goes, because more Lebanese died than Israelis.. Ah, but many more Germans died in World War II than British and French combined.. Hitler must have been right! Did you realize that when the Lebanese government announces daily the number of dead civilians, they include among them the hundreds of dead Hizbullah terrorists, because they are not soldiers? Did you realize that when Kofi Annan talks about Palestinian casualties in the conflict with Israel, he always includes the suicide murderers in the count? Has anyone mentioned this in Europe? What more should happen before you wake up?.. The prime minister of Lebanon, a clear accomplice of the Hizbullah, by omission and by submission, but not by commission, sheds tears publicly, in front of world media and Arab league foreign ministers, about the forty civilians who were just murdered indiscriminately by Israel, only to sheepishly admit, a few hours later, that actually one person was killed in that attack, not forty.. But the entire world has repeatedly watched the well acted phony drama of tears, with numerous replays by all networks, long after the truth came out.. Few people have bothered to read the small print of the admission that this was a total fabrication.. But we have already seen this movie, a few years ago, in the Jenin refugee camp , where people have been deliberately kept by the UN and by the Palestinians, for four generations(!), as refugees, only half an hour drive from where their grandparents used to live sixty years ago.. Arab satellite TV networks repeatedly broadcast pictures of mutilated bodies, some real, some being deliberately paraded in front of the cameras and some being dug from old graves.. A gut wrenching dead body of a little girl, killed in Gaza when she fell from a swing, is paraded in front of news cameras, shown repeatedly around the world as an Israeli bomb victim.. Shares of Hizbullah, Hamas and Iran go up in Muslim street markets.. Shares of moderate Arab regimes go down.. Do we hear about it from the European media? What more should happen before you wake up?.. How would you defend yourself against a deadly rocket, launched into your civilian population centers, from the terrace of an apartment building, without destroying the building and hurting its dwellers? Perhaps you are supposed to simply announce: I am not allowed to defend myself.. How can you destroy the next rocket, before it is launched, if it is hidden inside an apartment of a family with children, or if it is transported in an unmarked family car? And if you defend yourself in any way, does that make you a war criminal, because civilians died together with the terrorists? When I discussed in my book the need to rewrite international law, both purists and jurists smiled cynically at the naïve scientist, who is expressing views on matters of law.. I am the first to plead ignorance and incompetence in matters of international law, but please answer my questions: Can you destroy the building in which the missiles are hidden in bedrooms and from the terrace of which they are launched, or are you forbidden to defend yourself at all? Can you recommend an alternative? Do I have to read every day in European newspapers accusations about Israel violating international law, while no one is answering this simple question? How will you, dear Europe, react when the rockets will be launched against you? In Kosovo, without rockets, you invited the American bombers to solve the problem.. Numerous innocent civilians were killed, at your service.. You did not complain much.. Will you invite the Americans to defend your cities, when the rockets arrive? Will you then enjoy their protection and accuse them of war crimes, when they blast a building full of rockets and, in the process, kill innocent civilians? What more should happen before you wake up?.. Dear Europe, you live inside a nice and clean bottle, surrounded outside by deadly poison.. The bottle is transparent.. You can see clearly what is happening outside, but in order to do so, you must uncover your eyes.. At the moment, Israel has the unfortunate fate of being the cork of that bottle.. The eye of the storm has become the cork of the bottle.. The metaphor has changed, but not the role.. The poison is leaking into the bottle and no one inside is acknowledging it.. And the cork is attacked on both sides: With deadly weapons from the outside, and with deadly words and pictures from the inside.. America had its wake-up call on September 11, 2001.. It made terrible mistakes since then, but it is fully awake.. Some segments of its society are also in denial, but even they are awake.. In my book I made the simple geographic observation that when America wakes up, Europe is out to lunch.. Dear Europe, your lunch break is too long and you are now extending it into a siesta.. There is a war outside and you are going to be part of it.. The sooner you act, the fewer victims will die, both in Europe and in the Muslim world.. Appeasement is not an option and neither is hesitation.. You are guaranteed to be on the winning side, for the sake of civilization and also for the sake of millions of honest innocent Muslims, who will eventually pay the highest price for the madness of their leaders.. But you cannot win while in denial and certainly not before you open your eyes.. Enough Crying.. Translated from the French by Llewellyn Brown.. he politicians, journalists and intellectuals of Lebanon have, of late, been experiencing the shock of their lives.. They knew full well that Hezbollah had created an independent state in our country, a state including all the ministers and parallel institutions, duplicating those of Lebanon.. What they did not know – and are discovering with this war, and what has petrified them with surprise and terror  ...   to take over the world, or alternatively the communist Jew who plotted to destroy the European Aryan culture.. Today, it is the Jewish settler who has joined forces with the great satan in the aim of conquering Palestinian land, desecrating holy sites and drinking the blood of Palestinian children.. Can we stop the clock?.. The rhetoric is almost the same.. Just listen to what they are saying there, from Iran to Gaza and Lebanon to Syria, Saudia Arabia and Egypt.. In a speech delivered recently by the chairman of the Iranian parliament, he describes Nasrallah having Khomeni's blood running through his veins.. Indeed it does.. This blood is boiling in the veins of thousands of religious ministers and Moslem preachers and is pounding in the temples of masses of potential suicide bombers ready to commit suicide in order to perform the mitzvah of spilling the blood of a satanic Jew.. And all those politicians and western thinkers (its no coincidence that Spain's prime minister donned a kafiyeh and the French foreign minister lashed out at Israel from Beirut) led by the media are adjusting their eyes and camera lenses at the destruction perpetrated by our tanks (as if we started this war and as if we are killing innocent civilians, driven by a loss of senses and moral imperviousness).. They talk in double standards about the extent - they are all European descendents who rolled their eyes during that terrible war.. They are directly or indirectly assisting to update the image of Satan from the ghetto-like Jew to the new Jew , namely the Israeli.. They are not doing much to prevent the fundamentalist finger from pushing the button that will, God forbid, send 6 million new Jews up to heaven in the smoldering smoke of the global era's nuclear furnace.. And we the Jews? Then as now, we are burying our heads in the sand, repressing the new Nazism – the Islamic fundamentalism.. Can we stop the clock of the new anti-Semitism directed at the state of Israel? Perhaps this war will awaken those in slumber.. However this time, the western world will awaken in time.. Professor Oz Almog is a sociologist from the Haifa University.. August 4, 2006.. David Partesana.. Friends in Need….. A story about how Ido Cohen from KR09 asked for some help from his friends.. (and then got much more than he had hoped for).. f a single picture is indeed worth more than a thousand words, then take a close look at this one:.. What you see is a group of volunteers - some of them KR alumni (from KR02 through KR10), others friends and relatives – all of them standing patiently in line to be assigned to load up their cars with goods and supplies destined for shelters in the north of Israel.. These people – and many, many more like them – volunteered their time, money, and even took real risks to reach out and help a very needy population in some of the hardest hit areas in the north, specifically people living in miserable conditions, mainly Ethiopian immigrants.. For me it all started late one Tuesday evening, when Ido Cohen called me up and asked if I could spare him an hour or two (silly question, I said, what are friends for?).. Two weeks later, we are still working hard to help Ido on his mission, and have no intention of stopping as long as there are people still sitting in shelters and who need our help.. Ido's initiative has reached out and touched many people in all walks of life.. Utilizing both mobile phones and viral e-mail distribution lists, the aid project was very soon literally inundated by hundreds of respondents.. KR alumni were coming out of the woodwork to help, people were offering food, supplies, cars and companies were pitching in to.. It was a heartening response.. Take the example of Einat – a young student working at the IDC in Herzliya, who received a copy of Ido's e-mail, and felt that she simply had to help.. So she took a bus and arrived at the distribution center, and went around asking the volunteer drivers if there was room for her to help.. Turned down but unfazed, she was happy to take one of the fully laden commercial vehicles by herself up to a shelter in Haifa, and came back a few hours later full of stories of how grateful the kids at the center had been to receive the supplies.. And that is just one of the many selfless and inspiring stories that I have witnessed over the past few days.. Einat receiving her assignment at the distribution center.. It is said that adversity brings out the best in people, and I believe that holds true in this case.. I have written this note mainly in order to thank Ido for providing all of us with an opportunity to help others, for reminding us of what friends (and alumni) are really for, and for inspiring us to do more and to make that extra effort.. Graulich.. Graulich is a well known motivational speaker on morality, ethics, religion and politics.. He is also President and CEO of a leading marketing, branding and communications company in New York City.. He can be reached at.. irwin.. graulich at verizon.. et me get this straight.. You allow one of the largest terrorist organizations in the world to set up shop throughout your country.. You permit them to completely take over the entire southern third of Lebanon and you claim to have seen nothing.. You allow the terrorists to build sophisticated, fortified bunkers and you did not see any heavy equipment building them.. You allow the Hezbollah terrorists to move into many of your towns and villages, including the complete takeover of one of the largest neighborhoods in Beirut, where they proceed to build numerous, complex command and control centers.. and then you claim ignorance.. You allow Hezbollah to store weapons, bombs and rockets in your basements.. You turn a blind's eye when they carry arms into your restaurants, stores and buildings, yet you call yourself an innocent civilian.. You watch the Hezbollah parades with hundreds of thousands of participants including children screaming, Jihad.. Death to Israel, Jews and Americans, burning American and Israeli flags, while goose-stepping soldiers with Nazi-like salutes receive your cheers--and all of you innocent civilians did not see a thing even though you were captured on videotape.. All this, while Koffi Annan and much of the UN insist that we should not believe our lying eyes about the innocent civilians.. There are giant posters of the rubenesque terrorist leader, Hasan Nasrallah, all over Lebanon with headlines declaring the imminent destruction of Israel.. Yet you choose to elect this terrorist party to your government--and all of the so called innocent Lebanese do not know anything about anything.. Twenty thousand rockets and launchers are shipped into your country along with other military equipment by plane, truck and ship, and the government industrial complex knew absolutely nothing; and neither did all those poor, innocent civilians who are now crying.. So you allow the Devil into your homes and into your lives; you take the Devil's money, food and medicine; you sleep with the Devil.. and get a serious evil disease.. And then you blame the Jews, of course! Well, there is no sympathy for the devil.. or his helpers!.. The Lebanese knowingly allowed (aka aided and abbetted) murderous terrorists to proliferate in their sovereign nation.. Like spoiled teenagers, they now refuse to take any responsibility.. Of course there are some truly innocent civilians, but there were hundreds of thousands of beautiful German babies and mothers in Dresden and Berlin who were blown to bits.. If an attack emanates from your country, the entire country is responsible.. That is how life works and it is sometimes unfair.. I hate when people lie to my face and expect me to believe their vile fabrications.. Does the Muslim world really think that the vast majority of Americans are that foolish? Only the quislings at CNN like Larry King, Nic Robertson, Wolf Blitzer, et al will fall for this Joseph Goebbals-style propaganda.. The confused, immoral left and their paper of record, The New York Times only see innocent civilians throughout Lebanon.. Europe, that moral bastion which gave birth to Nazism, will look at photos of men, women and children in despair, without putting the image into its proper context.. Yet countries like Sweden, Switzerland and Ireland, who could not decide whether to support Hitler or Churchill during WWII, can drum up the moral authority to criticize Israel today.. And leave it to Vichy, France 2006 headed by Jaques Petain Chirac to condemn Israel's response.. Seeing television snippets of wounded or dead Lebanese with people sitting on the ground crying and calling them all innocent civilians is the same as looking at a photograph of the armpit of Christie Brinkley and saying, Here is the photo of a supermodel.. Isn't she beautiful? The armpit picture is only a part of the story.. When human beings see babies or mothers hurting, no matter what, we feel the pain.. If we saw baby pictures of Charles Manson, we would want to cuddle him.. We cannot look at photos of so-called innocent civilians in a vacuum.. It is important for all moral, decent human beings to realize that the compassion emotion is similar to the sex emotion.. Often times, it interferes with truth, logic and morality.. Listen up all you Innocent Lebanese along with your innocent, Hezbollah supporting government.. Do you want to know why your towns, villages and cities are smoldering? Do you want to know why 800,000 people are homeless and 600 are dead? Do you want to know why your infrastructure is devastated?.. The answer is.. That the Jews are simply not going to pack up their little valises and walk into gas chambers again.. The Jews will not be taken from their homes and marched into the Mediterranean Sea by Nazis or Hezbollah-Hamas-Syrian-Iranian, Nazi-like sympathizers.. The Jews in Israel or anywhere else are just not going to allow themselves to be shipped away like you dream about every day.. Attention all radical Muslims throughout the entire world and Jacques Chirac.. The Jews will not be walking into death camps or graves ever again, and if you dare try it, Qana, South Beirut, Tyre, Nabatiyeh, Bint Jbeil, Kounine, Beit Yahoun, Rashaya, Baalbek, Majdel Zoun, Ayt-a-Shab, etc.. will all look a whole lot worse than Dresden and Berlin.. And Tehran may become hotter than Hiroshima.. Attention Lebanon--your country is smoldering because Jews are sick and tired of being murdered.. You keep pushing those pathetic, weak, Torah studying Jews by using terrorism and kidnapping soldiers, and all, yes all of Lebanon will be smoldering.. Listen very carefully enemies of Israel, because you are making a giant mistake.. I urge any person that will be having dinner with Sayed Hassan Nesrallah, the big fat brave man hiding in his little rat hole while his fighters are being picked off like little olives on a tree, to make sure his life insurance is fully paid.. Mr.. hero Nesrallah is just a pimp for Iran, sending out his Hezbollah terrorist hookers to screw the Jews.. The amazing thing is that Iran is not an Arab country.. They should not be involved in the Arab-Israeli conflict.. They do not border Israel, so there is no Iranian territorial dispute where they claim, like everyone else, that Israel occupies their land.. Yet, Ahmadinejad's (pronounced-- a mad dog on Jihad ) hatred for Jews and Israel rivals that of Adolf Hitler.. It is no wonder that the Iranian president feels this way since Israel is supreme in virtually every area--technically, militarily, scientifically, culturally, morally and religiously.. Each attempt by macho Muslim/Arab countries to destroy Israel has been met with a totally devastating, humiliating defeat.. Like Saddam, the skinny, little Ahmadinejad (pronounced a mad dog on Jihad ) aspires to be the big hero of the Muslim world.. What Ahmadinejad (pronounced a mad dog on Jihad ) does not comprehend, is that Israel will not use a tongue depressor when they capture him and his associates.. The truth be told that should Iran dare make one wrong move directly on Israel, then Israel will simply Wipe the Shiite out of them!.. It's fascinating that this should come out of Europe.. Matthias Dapfner, Chief Executive of the huge German publisher Axel Springer AG, has written a blistering attack in DIE WELT, Germany's largest daily paper, against the timid reaction of Europe in the face of the Islamic threat.. This is a _must read_ by all Americans.. History will certify its correctness.. *.. Europe - Thy Name Is Cowardice.. Commentary by Mathias Dapfner CEO, Axel Springer , AG.. A.. few days ago Henry Broder wrote in Welt am Sonntag, Europe - your family name is appeasement.. It's a phrase you can't get out of your head because it's so terribly true.. Appeasement cost millions of Jews and non-Jews their lives as England and France, allies at the time, negotiated and hesitated too long before they noticed that Hitler had to be fought, not bound to toothless agreements.. Appeasement legitimized and stabilized Communism in the Soviet Union , then East Germany , then all the rest of Eastern Europe where for decades, inhuman suppressive, murderous governments were glorified as the ideologically correct alternative to all other possibilities.. Appeasement crippled Europe when genocide ran rampant in Kosovo, and even though we had absolute proof of ongoing mass-murder, we Europeans debated and debated and debated, and were still debating when finally the Americans had to come from halfway around the world, into Europe yet again, and do our work for us.. Rather than protecting democracy in the Middle East , European appeasement, camouflaged behind the fuzzy word equidistance now countenances suicide bombings in Israel by fundamentalist Palestinians.. Appeasement generates a mentality that allows Europe to ignore nearly ** 3,000**,000 victims of Saddam's torture and murder machinery and, motivated by the self-righteousness of the peace-movement, has the gall to issue bad grades to George Bush.. Even as it is uncovered that the loudest critics of the American action in Iraq made illicit billions, no, TENS of billions, in the corrupt U.. N.. Oil-for-Food program.. And now we are faced with a particularly grotesque form of appeasement.. How is Germany reacting to the escalating violence by Islamic fundamentalists in Holland and elsewhere? By suggesting that we really should have a Muslim Holiday in Germany ? I wish I were joking, but I am not.. A substantial fraction of our (German) Government, and if the polls are to be believed, the German people, actually believe that creating an Official State Muslim Holiday will somehow spare us from the wrath of the fanatical Islamists.. One cannot help but recall Britain 's Neville Chamberlain waving the laughable treaty signed by Adolph Hitler , and declaring European Peace in our time.. What else has to happen before the European public and its political leadership get it? There is a sort of crusade underway, an especially perfidious crusade consisting of systematic attacks by fanatic Muslims, focused on civilians, directed against our free, open Western societies, and intent upon Western Civilization's utter destruction.. It is a conflict that will most likely last longer than any of the great military conflicts of the last century - a conflict conducted by an enemy that cannot be tamed by tolerance and accommodation but is actually spurred on by such gestures, which have proven to be, and will always be taken by the Islamists for signs of weakness.. Only two recent American Presidents had the courage needed for anti-appeasement: Reagan and Bush.. His American critics may quibble over the details, but we Europeans know the truth.. We saw it first hand: Ronald Reagan ended the Cold War, freeing half of the German people from nearly 50 years of terror and virtual slavery.. And Bush, supported only by the Social Democrat Blair, acting on moral conviction, recognized the danger in the Islamic War against democracy.. His place in history will have to be evaluated after a number of years have passed.. In the meantime, Europe sits back with charismatic self-confidence in the multicultural corner, instead of defending liberal society's values and being an attractive center of power on the same playing field as the true great powers, America and China.. On the contrary - we Europeans present ourselves, in contrast to those arrogant Americans , as the World Champions of tolerance , which even (Germany 's Interior Minister) Otto Schily justifiably criticizes.. Why? Because we're so moral? I fear it's more because we're so materialistic so devoid of a moral compass.. For his policies, Bush risks the fall of the dollar, huge amounts of additional national debt, and a massive and persistent burden on the American economy - because unlike almost all of Europe, Bush realizes what is at stake - literally everything.. While we criticize the capitalistic robber barons of America because they seem too sure of their priorities, we timidly defend our Social Welfare systems.. Stay out of it! It could get expensive! We'd rather discuss reducing our 35-hour workweek or our dental coverage, or our 4 weeks of paid vacation.. Or listen to TV pastors preach about the need to reach out to terrorists.. To understand and forgive.. These days, Europe reminds me of an old woman who, with shaking hands, frantically hides her last pieces of jewelry when she notices a robber breaking into a neighbor's house.. Appeasement? Europe , thy name is Cowardice.. God Bless America!.. Iran Was behind Hezbollah-Israel War.. Iran Focus.. Lon.. don, Aug.. 16 – 2006.. IRAN 2006: LEADERS RULE: ENEMY OF HUMANITY (NOT THE PEOPLE!).. ran masterminded the July 12 attack on an Israeli military squad by the Lebanese militia Hezbollah which ignited a major military offensive against the group by the Jewish state, Iran Focus has learnt.. A well-placed source inside the clerical establishment told Iran Focus that prior to the start of hostilities Tehran dispatched several top officials including the chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) to attend a summit in Syria which took place on July 4 and focused on ways to upset the regional balance in the Middle East.. Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the founder of the Islamic Republic, travelled to the Syrian capital last month, staying in Damascus between July 1 and 6 under the cover of pilgrimage to a revered Shiite Muslim shrine.. Simultaneously, several top Hezbollah officials arrived in Damascus for what they claimed was to meet Hassan Khomeini.. On July 4, the secretary general of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani made an unannounced trip to the Syrian capital.. The Supreme Commander of the IRGC Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of the Staff of the Islamic Republic's armed forces Major General Hassan Firouzabadi also secretly travelled to Damascus to attend the summit.. The summit, which was held at the Iranian embassy in Damascus, was also attended by top Syrian security officials and Iran's ambassador to Syria Hassan Akhtari.. The radical Shiite cleric was formerly the chief of staff of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.. During the summit a politico-military strategy was drawn up for a possible attack by Hezbollah fighters against Israel to trigger a regional war, and the militia was called on to prepare for an offensive.. Days later, on July 11, following a round of talks in Brussels with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Iran's nuclear standoff with the West, Larijani made a second unannounced to trip to Damascus.. There he met and held talks with Syrian Vice-President Farouk al-Shara, making the final arrangements for the actions that were to follow.. Finally, while meeting a top Hezbollah official in the Iranian embassy, Larijani gave the order for the Lebanese militia to mount the cross-border attack on the Jewish state, triggering the 34-day war which has left 157 Israelis and 1,110 Lebanese dead.. Avraham Tal.. Justified, Essential and Timely.. aaretz 28.. B.. uthaina Shaaban, the Syrian minister of expatriates and a close adviser to president Bashar Assad, said last week that his country would not tolerate a situation in which Damascus would be in the range of Israeli artillery.. She warned that Syria would take action if the Israel Defense Forces deployed within 20 kilometers of the Syrian border.. While Damascus is not prepared to countenance the presence of another country's artillery so close to its border, even though that country poses no threat to its security, Israel is supposed to make peace with 13,000 rockets and missiles threatening half of its territory and with the fact that this threat is coming from a terrorist organization that controls Lebanon and which takes orders from no one - except the dark regime in Iran, which seeks to wipe Israel off the map.. And some Israelis wanted this situation to perpetuate itself.. Why did Hezbollah invest so much time and energy in creating a network of rockets and missiles that is the densest in the world (at least in terms of weaponry per square kilometer) After all, its leaders knew that Israel would never threaten Lebanon, and would never cross the Blue Line, the international border that both Israel and the world recognizes, unless provoked by Hezbollah.. One explanation is that this network was intended to deter Israel from intervening should Iran, busy developing its nuclear capability, be threatened.. Another explanation: this is the basic phase that will prepare the stage for an offensive attack on Israel, supported by Iran, that is intended to liquidate the Jewish state - what its enemies call the Zionist entity.. Some experts, both authentic and wannabees, argue that Hezbollah has no Israeli agenda.. Does such a claim hold water? Even in the movement's early days in 1980, its leaders - such as, for example, spiritual mentor Sheikh Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah - declared that the Zionist entity had no right to continue to exist.. In an article in The New York Times this week (July 21), Ted Koppel writes about his meeting, a few weeks before the war, with Sheikh Nabil Qaouk, whom Koppel refers to as the commander of Hezbollah forces in southern Lebanon: When Sheik Qaouk talked about Israel and Hezbollah, his organization's ambitions were not framed in purely defensive terms.. There is only harmony between Hezbollah's end game and the more provocative statements made over the past year by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran's president.. Both foresee the elimination of the Jewish state.. Nonetheless, there are those who genuinely believe that the confrontation - or, at least, the present showdown - could have been prevented.. How? Through appeasement.. Had Israel released Lebanese prisoners - as Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah demanded - and, if that concession had not satisfied him, had Israel handed over to Lebanon the Shaba Farms area - known in Israel as Har Dov and which is formerly Syrian territory - would Hezbollah have dismantled its missile network and avoided any provocations along the Israeli border? Hezbollah would then have come up with other pretexts: for example, a demand for the return of the Shiite villages in the northern Galilee whose inhabitants fled or were banished in 1948; or, for example, the demand that Palestine must be liberated not only to fulfill the goal of a jihad(holy war), but also to provide homes for Palestinians currently living in crowded refugee camps in Lebanon who are a thorn in that country's side.. And eventually Hezbollah (installed as Lebanon's formal regime), in collaboration with Iran, would have launched a war of annihilation against Israel.. Should the confrontation with Hezbollah have been delayed until Iran had already acquired nuclear weapons? If Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz went into full gear given Nasrallah's provocative action and intelligence assessments of senior IDF commanders, they did the right thing at the right time.. Contrary to what the critics are arguing, the IDF is not fighting a small guerrilla organization.. It is dealing with a trained, skilled, well-organized, highly motivated infantry that is equipped with the cream of the crop of modern weaponry from the arsenals of Syria, Iran, Russia and China, and which is very familiar with the territory on which it is fighting.. In such a showdown, even when you have tanks and fighter planes, the going is very slow, and, sadly, you must also pay a heavy price in terms of casualties.. One of the claims being made by critics is that Israel is serving the interests of American imperialism, and that our children are shedding their blood in the name of those interests.. Is there no limit to malicious cynicism? There is a genuine congruence of Israeli and American interests in the war against world terrorism.. Without America's political, economic, military and moral support, Israel would never have been capable of waging its war of survival against the evil axis of Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran, and in the face of an indifferent world.. Some 2,500 critics of the war demonstrated Saturday night, claiming Israel was repeating the mistake of the first Lebanon war.. However, that war achieved its goal, and in an impressive manner: the Palestine Liberation Organization's removal from Lebanese soil.. Deviation from, and expansion of, that goal plunged Israel into the Lebanese quagmire, where we remained for 18 years.. Does anyone genuinely believe that Israel will repeat that mistake in 2006?.. The more vocal critics include, on the one hand, many naive individuals who believe that a weak-kneed policy of appeasement for dealing with blood-thirsty terrorists can guarantee Israel's continued survival and, on the other hand, a not inconsiderable number of genuinely evil people who pray for Israel's liquidation, whether through its transformation into a binational state or through its annihilation.. Those who find it hard to believe that such evil people exist should read between the lines of the statements made by Arab Knesset members, and should listen to the sermons of muezzins in Israeli mosques (for example, one in Shfaram last Friday, who, as quoted in Maariv on July 25, declared: We back Nasrallah's struggle ).. Richard Littlejohn.. August 5th, 2006.. Daily Mail.. here's no doubt Israel is losing the propaganda war.. You don't have to be a paid-up peacenik to find some of the pictures coming out of the Middle East distressing.. No one with an iota of humanity wants to see the corpses of women and children caught up in the conflict.. But you don't have to be a conspiracy theorist, either, to wonder how many of the male civilians killed by the Israelis are actually Hezbollah terrorists or whether everything we're being shown from Lebanon is for real.. Islamonazis are sophisticated propagandists and they know they'll find a gullible audience in the civilised world for their carefully-strewn teddy bears, strategically-placed Baby Milk Factory signs (in English) and wailing widows from central casting.. Have you ever noticed how every time a coalition air strike goes astray in Iraq, it always manages to hit a wedding party ?.. Why is there only ever one child's shoe in the rubble, never a pair? There always seems to be a broken medicine box, too, with a handy red cross never a red crescent, mind you on the lid, just in case we haven't got the message.. Credulous CNN correspondents and hand-wringing BBC reporters fall over themselves to sign up for the Hezbollah guided tour of the ruins.. I use a rough rule of thumb whenever I watch television coverage of the Middle East.. Anyone who pronounces Hezbollah as 'Hiz-bull-arrrgh' and Israeli as 'Izza-ra-ay-lee' is almost certainly telling lies.. The bien-pensant buzzword used to describe Israel's bombing is disproportionate.. But what's proportionate ? Are the thousands of rockets fired at genuine civilian targets in Israel proportionate ?.. It is only because Israelis are hunkered down in underground shelters built out of necessity and bitter experience, or have fled out of range of Hezbollah's salvoes, that there haven't been piles of bodies on their side of the border.. What would world opinion consider an acceptable death toll before acknowledging Israel's right to retaliation and self-defence 1,000? 10,000? 100,000? 1,000,000?.. Hezbollah has started a war it knows it can't win in the certain knowledge that there will be civilian casualties.. Its stated aim is to kill as many Israelis as possible and if innocent Lebanese get caught in the crossfire, tough.. These fanatics have little or no regard for human life.. Their tactic is to hide among civilians; to use terrified women and children as human shields; to deploy school playgrounds as rocket launch sites; hotels and apartment blocks as command centres; homes as weapons dumps; mosques as air-raid shelters.. I've heard reporters referring to Hezbollah as a resistance movement.. They love it, don't they? Just as they insist on calling terrorist murderers radicals or militants as if there's no difference between Al Qaeda and Aslef train drivers on unofficial strike.. What they never point out is that if Hezbollah didn't exist, there would be nothing to resist.. Israel is the Tony Martin of the Middle East, lashing out in fear and frustration after enduring years of provocation.. Just as Tony Martin was abandoned by the police to endure burglary after burglary at his remote farmhouse, so the international community has done nothing to disarm and disband Hezbollah or prevent it and Hamas repeatedly attacking Israel.. The United Nations hasn't lifted a finger to stop Iran and Syria supporting and supplying a standing terrorist army in Lebanon.. There are no sanctions against the barking mad president of Iran when he constantly threatens to wipe Israel off the face of the earth and is hell-bent on obtaining nuclear weapons.. Iran has put Lebanese civilians in the front line of its lunatic war against Israel and the U.. S.. in particular and Western civilisation in general.. So where's the international condemnation?.. Hezbollah is the provisional wing of Iran.. Would it be proportionate if Israel attacked the paymasters and ringleaders of Hezbollah in Tehran?.. Security.. It may yet come to that.. But first Israel has to remove the immediate threat to its security.. The United Nations isn't going to do that.. The UN is a busted flush, led by the laughable Kofi Annan the Chauncey Gardiner of world diplomacy.. When it left the U.. -led coalition to go it alone in Iraq, it sent a clear message to other tyrants and rogue states that they had nothing to fear from the UN.. Listening to world opinion has got Israel nowhere.. It was told it should trade land for peace.. So it did.. It got war.. Israel pulled out of southern Lebanon six years ago.. Hezbollah boasts that it has spent that time preparing for this fresh assault, building tunnels and bunkers and stockpiling a deadly arsenal of 13,000 weapons, whic.. h it is now raining down on Israeli civilians.. There are.. hourly calls for a ceasefire, but when Tel Aviv suspended bombing for 48 hours the response was a record number of Katyusha rockets fired into Israel in return.. I saw a BBC reporter standing on a hillside trying to convince us that because missiles were still being fired from Lebanon despite three weeks of fighting, it was evidence that Israel's tactics weren't working and it couldn't win.. Hezbollah has spent six years building up its arsenal in preparation for this war.. Who said an Israeli victory would only take three weeks?.. If there is a ceasefire, Hezbollah will simply regroup.. There's talk of a negotiated settlement, but how do you cut a deal when one side says it will not be satisfied until the other is totally eradicated?.. Lasting peace has only ever followed total victory in war.. Even if Israel and Hezbollah/ Iran agree to walk away tomorrow, we'll be back here again in a few years.. Then there's the Palestinian question.. Again, even though Israel ceded territory in pursuit of peace, terror attacks and kidnappings on Israeli soil have continued.. There's talk about dusting off the old road map.. Israel accepts there will have to be a two-state solution, but the only road map of the Middle East its enemies will accept is one without Israel on it at all.. Carnage.. Meanwhile, spare a thought for the Jewish community in Britain.. They're as distressed by the carnage as the rest of us and there are divisions over Israel's actions.. No one wallows in the death of innocents except, of course, Hezbollah and its Iranian puppet-masters.. At this time of year, there are 15,000 British Jewish teenagers in Israel on the traditional summer rite of passage.. And there are 30,000 British passport holders living in Israel.. Although we had wall-to-wall coverage of grumbling British passport holders being evacuated from Beirut, there doesn't seem to have been equal concern about our fellow citizens under bombardment on the other side of the border.. What struck me about the recent pro-Israel demonstration in London was the number of Union flags in the crowd.. These are our people.. I didn't notice any Union flags at the Stop The War rally, though there were plenty of We Are All Hezbollah Now banners.. It doesn't seem to dawn on them that if you want to stop the war you've got to stop Hezbollah.. But what drives most of these peace campaigners is not so much a desire for peace as a hatred of Israel.. Every time something goes off in Iraq we're told it will radicalise young Muslims back in Britain.. We hear that Tony Blair's failure to call for an immediate halt to the Israeli offensive has put us at imminent risk of another Islamist homicide attack on our streets.. Despite the Hezbollah war on Israel and the mounting casualties and the widespread condemnation of Israel in this country I've yet to hear anyone warn that young British Jews are queueing to blow up themselves and hundreds of others at Brent Cross shopping centre.. I repeat, this war is awful.. The civilian deaths are a tragedy.. But there won't be peace in the Middle East until the likes of Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas recognise Israel's right to exist.. And, I'm afraid, this side of kingdom come, that just ain't gonna happen.. Israel may be losing the propaganda war, but it isn't fighting a propaganda war - it's fighting a.. real war for its very existence.. LINKS.. The Israel Project TIP.. Gius.. Last updated.. Shtetl.. and its lost faded glory.. nited in  ...   Moshe Want.. At the beginning of 1940 the Gombin Jews were evicted from their homes and concentrated in a separate section of the town.. t first, the ghetto was open and the Jews could go out to purchase food from Polish peasants.. At that time, there were 2100 Jews in the ghetto, 250 of whom had been deported from surrounding townships.. Men and women were forced to provide a variety of services and work for the German authorities and the German companies that were being established in the area.. During the first half of 1941 the Jews began to be rounded up and sent to labor camps in Konin, Eindziov, and Hohenzaltz.. About 200 Jews were deported to the labor camps, many of them eventually ending up in Auschwitz.. n the spring of 1942 the Germans liquidated the Gombin ghetto, dispatching the remaining Jews to the extermination camp at Chelmno.. The Jews who resisted the Germans and their collaborators were shot on the spot.. Only 212 Jews from Gombin survived.. Of these, 180 escaped at the time of the German invasion and managed to cross the border into the area of Poland that had been occupied by the Soviet Union.. Of the other 32, many spent the war in hiding on the Aryan side, while a few survived the concentration camps.. After the war, the majority of those who remained alive went to Israel.. Translated to English by.. Meged.. Bialystok - the Mother City Which Has Been.. Vilna was known as the Jerusalem of Lithuania and Bialystok could have rightfully been called the Jerusalem of Poland.. It was the city of Rabbi Shmuel Mohliver, founder of the Hibat Zion movement, of Nahum Tzemach, father of the Habima theater.. The city of the Tarbut Hebrew school, and of the wonderful network of educational institutions which consisted of elementary schools, high schools, and yeshivot.. The city of exemplary cultural institutions and charitable foundations, of eminent rabbis, of erudite Torah scholars, of men of learning, of writers, and of vast and varied communal activities in which all ideological streams took part: from the secular Bund labor movement, the Poalei Zion, the Hashomer Hatzair, the Halutz, the Noar Hazioni, the Mizrachi, the Hashomer Hadati, to the ultra-orthodox Agudas Yisroel movement.. All these helped Bialystok acquire the affectionate name rightfully bestowed upon her.. Moreover, among all the Polish cities, in the 1930's, Bialystok had the highest percentage of Hebrew speakers.. This city became the regional headquarters for the organization of the ghetto uprisings.. Mordechai Tennenbaum of the Bialystok underground, led the uprising on August 16, 1943.. Jewish settlement in the village of Bialystok was encountered by the manorial overlords, and the heads of the Jewish community were permitted to take part in the municipal elections in 1749.. he position of the Jews deteriorated when Bialystok passed to Prussia (1795), and subsequently to Russia.. The economic situation deteriorated when there was an influx of Jews expelled from the neighboring villages in 1825-35 and 1845.. There was a steep increase in the Jewish population, which in 1856 numbered 9547 out of a total population of 13787.. Many of them were homeless or unemployed.. Welfare institutions were established in an attempt to alleviate the situation.. he development of the large textile industry in Bialystok after the Napoleonic wars owes much to the Jewish enterprise.. Textile mills were erected by two Jews in 1850.. As they acquired spinning, weaving, knitting and dyeing sills.. Jews replaced the German specialists.. In 1860, 19 of the 44 textile mills in Bialystok were Jewish-owned.. In 1898, of the 372 mills in Bialystok, 299 (83.. 38%) were.. Jewish-owned, while 5,192 (59.. 5%) of the workers were Jewish.. he Jewish labor movement found strong support in Bialystok, and in 1897, many Jewish workers there became members of the Bund.. The Bialystok Jewish workers issued an underground newspaper: Der Bialystoker Arbayter.. In the same year, the intensive activities of the labor movement in Bialystok during the Russian revolution of 1905-06 provoked savage acts of reprisal by the Russian authorities.. The pogroms in Bialystok that occurred between June 1 and 3, 1906, were the most violent of the mob outbreaks against Russian Jewry that year.. Resulting in 70 Jews being killed and 90 gravely injured.. he contacts with German Jewry during the period that Bialystok was governed by Prussia had introduced the spirit of enlightenment ( Haskala ) into Jewish circles in Bialystok.. Prominent in the movement were members of the.. Zamenhof.. family,.. Elazar Ludwig Zamenhof.. , (created the international language of Esperanto);.. Abraham Schapiro.. , author of Toldot Yisrael ve-Sifruto (1892.. ); Jehiel Michael Zublodowski.. , a contributor to Ha'Karmel and author of Ru'ach Chayyim (1860); and the poet.. The first Hebrew kindergarten was founded in 1910.. Hebrew elementary and high schools were established after World War I.. n 1895, the Jewish population numbered 47,783 (out of 62993).. Of the 3628 merchants and shopkeepers in the city in 1897, 3186 (87.. 8%) were Jews.. In 1913, the Jewish population numbered 61,500 (out of 89,700).. In 1921, 93% of the businessmen were Jewish, and 89% of the industrial plants were Jewish-owned; later the proportion of Jews in business decreased (to 78.. 3% in 1928).. In 1932 there were over 46,000 (out of 91,207) in Bialystok.. The Holocaust.. hortly after the outbreak of World War II, the Germans entered Bialystok.. First occupying it from September 15 until September 22 1939, when it was transferred to the Soviets.. he second German occupation was from June 27, 1941, to July 27, 1944.. At that time, some 50,000 Jews lived in Bialystok and about 350000 in the whole province.. On the day following the second German occupation, known as Red Friday , the Germans burned down the Jewish quarter, including the synagogue and at least 2000 Jews who had been driven inside.. Other similar events followed in rapid succession: on Thursday, July 3, 300 of the Jewish intelligentsia were rounded up and taken to Pietrasze, a field outside the town, and murdered there; on Saturday, July 12, over 3000 Jewish men were put to death there.. Judenrat was established on German orders (July 26, 1941), and chaired by.. Rabbi Rosenmann.. But his deputy,.. Ephraim Barash.. , was the actual head and served as its laison with the German authorities.. On August 1, some 50,000 Jews were segregated into a closed Ghetto.. very Jew in the 15-65 age group was forced to work and the Germans meted out physical punishment, including death sentences to anyone attempting to avoid or resist forced labour.. There were private factories in the Ghetto, owned by a German industrialist, Oskal Stefen.. Jews were also employed in various German enterprises outside the Ghetto.. Two thousand persons were employed by the Judenrat, not including those in charge of the Ghetto's economic enterprises.. Over 200 men served in the Jewish Police.. The deputy chairman of the Judenrat,.. Barash.. , knew the truth about the deportations and death camps and had also read German documents containing plans to liquidate the Ghetto.. Nevertheless, up to his last day, he trusted in the idea that the inmates' hard work and economic usefulness would delay their destruction or even save them.. Most of the inhabitants of the Ghetto trusted Barash and shared his illusions.. He stayed at his post until he was deported to Majdanek and murdered there.. he Germans embarked upon the liquidation of the Jews on February 5-12, 1943.. When the first Aktion in the Ghetto took place.. The Jews were dragged from their homes and hiding places.. One thousand of them were killed on the spot.. While 10,000 were deported to Treblinka death camp.. At this time, the local German authorities who were interested in prolonging the existence of the Ghetto for economic reasons were negotiating with theand Koenigsberg authorities on the date of the liquidation of the Ghetto.. The date determined for the final destruction of the Bialystok Ghetto was August 16, 1943.. n underground came into existence in November 1942.. Mordechai Tenenbaum (Tamaroff).. was sent by the Warsaw Jewish fighting organization to organize resistance in the Bialystok Ghetto.. Its main problems were the lack of arms and disunity in the ranks.. The Ghetto stood alone in its struggle, for no help could be expected from the Polish resistance.. In the early stage,.. supported the Ghetto underground and supplied it with finances and information, through Tenenbaum.. His support, however, lasted as long as the Germans were unaware of its existence.. When the first Aktion took place, in February 1943, the underground was not yet ready.. However it stepped up its activities and attempts were made to establish contact with the Partisans in the forests.. Three small groups left the Ghetto for the forests (January, March and June 1943).. t was not until July 1943, after the break with the Judenrat chairman, that the various underground movements in the Ghetto united, on the basis of Tenenbaum's views, in a united fighting organization.. The united Jewish underground called upon the Jews to fight in the Ghetto rather than in the forests.. The final liquidation of the Ghetto was to take place on August 16, 1943 and the Germans, aware of the existence of the underground, made careful secret preparations for the Aktion.. The underground engaged in an open battle with the Germans, and after a day of fighting, 72 fighters retreated to a bunker in order to organize their escape to the forests.. The Germans killed all the fighters, with a single exception.. The Ghetto fighters held out for another month, and night after night the gunfire reverberated through Bialystok.. The commanders of the uprising,.. Tenenbaum.. Moszkowicz.. presumably committed suicide when the revolt was quashed.. Other prominent leaders of the underground were.. Zerach Zylberberg, Hershel Rosenthal, Haika Grosman.. Israel Margulies.. A month later, the Germans announced the completion of the Aktion in which some 40,000 Jews were deported to Treblinka and Majdanek.. Jerusalem, 2000, page 146.. Printed with special permission by Yad Vashem.. City in northeastern Poland.. Before World War II, 50,000 Jews lived in Bialystok, representing than half of the city's population.. he Germans invaded Bialystok on September 15, 1939.. A week later, they transferred the city to the Soviets, as promised in the Nazi-Soviet Pact.. However, when the Germans attacked the Soviets in June 1941, they retook control of Bialystok.. June 27 was named Red Friday because on that day Nazi Einsatzgruppen murdered 2,000 Jews there.. Over the next two weeks, another 4,000 Jews were killed in an open field near Pietrasz.. n June the Nazis ordered the Jews to establish a Judenrat;.. Efraim Barasz.. eventually became its chairman.. On August 1, 50,000 Bialystok Jews were restricted to a Ghetto.. Within three months, the Judenrat was to transfer 4,500 of the ghetto's inhabitants to the town of Pruzhany.. Most of them were killed when the Pruzhany Ghetto was destroyed in January 1943.. he Bialystok Ghetto was divided into two parts, on the east and west sides of the Biala River.. It quickly became an industrial center where textiles and weapons were manufactured for the Germans.. Most of the Jews worked in these industries; a handful worked in German factories outside the ghetto.. Within this setup, the Jews also managed to secretly manufacture products for their own use.. The Germans gave the Jews very little food, so they grew their own food in.. Judenrat gardens.. The Judenrat instituted aid organizations in the ghetto.. This included soup kitchens, two hospitals, an outpatient clinic, pharmacies, a gynecological clinic, a first aid organization, two schools, and a court.. They also established a Jewish police force.. here were several Jewish youth movements in the ghetto that split into two undergrounds.. These eventually united in July 1943 under the command of.. Mordechal Tenenbaum.. Daniel Moskowicz.. also established a secret archive in the ghetto that functioned until April 1943.. The archive's documents, which included many from the Judenrat, were hidden on the Polish side of Bialystok.. rom February 5-12, 1943 the Germans carried out a massacre in the ghetto.. Two thousand Jews were shot and 10,000 were deported to.. One of the two resistance movements tried to fight the Nazis and lost many of its members.. Judenrat chairman.. Barasz.. believed that the Nazis would be satisfied with those Jews they deported, and would therefore leave the rest of the ghetto alone.. However, in August 1943, the Nazis ordered the final liquidation the ghetto.. At that point, the ghetto had 30,000 inhabitants.. On the night of August 15, German troops and Ukrainian collaborators surrounded the ghetto.. The next morning, the Jews were ordered to gather for evacuation.. At 10:00 a.. m.. the underground revolted.. The main goal of the uprising was to create an opening in the German lines, allowing the fighters to escape to the forest.. However, they only had a few weapons and over 300 died per day.. At one point, German troops even entered the ghetto with tanks and armored cars.. The fighting lasted until August 20, when the resistance fighters' last defenses fell.. The resistance leaders,.. Moszkow.. i.. cz,.. fell back to the last stronghold where they committed suicide.. eportations began on August 18 and lasted three days.. Most of the Jews of the ghetto were deported to.. , Majdanek, Poniatowa, Blizyn and Auschwitz, while 1,200 children were sent to Theresienstadt, and later to Auschwitz.. About 150 fighters from Bialystok joined the Partisans.. Only 2,000 Jews were left in the ghetto; they were deported to Majdanek three weeks later.. In all, about 200 Jews from Bialystok survived the camps and several dozen survived by hiding on the Polish side of the city; 60 Jews who had joined the Partisans also survived..
