Descriptive info: Living Links: These Classes Are a Blessing.. Idris Bayan believes strongly that every Muslim should seek knowledge, if they can.. I think it s a necessity of Islam to have knowledge, says Bayan, an American convert sporting a pencil-thin Van Dyke goatee.. About 20 years ago, he converted to Islam without reading the Qur an or having met a Muslim.. But parts of the religion fit him like a glove: I always tried to have good character, good manners, and to be good toward people regardless of race, color, or creed, he says.. Years later, he moved 30 miles up the highway from San Jose, Calif.. , to Hayward, where the old Zaytuna Institute then offered classes for the San Francisco Bay Area community.. That move made a profound change in his life.. I would not know what I know now, he says.. If it hadn t been for Zaytuna, I wouldn t know some of the Arabic I know, some of the words I use.. Today, Bayan hasn t stopped seeking knowledge -- and he s found himself again at Zaytuna.. Last Saturday, he was at Zaytuna College, attending classes on hadith and theology -- classes that are part of the college Honors Program but are open for community members to enroll in person (or watch free online via livestreaming).. A lot has changed since those days in Hayward most notably, a community organization has become a liberal arts college but the classes Bayan attends, part of Zaytuna s new Living Links program, are a throwback to the days before the college was founded, when Zaytuna Institute was a magnet for weekend warriors searching for faith-based instruction and inspiration.. These classes are a blessing for the Bay Area, said Bayan after the program s first Saturday sessions.. The teachers are a blessing.. If possible, everybody should come and learn.. The Living Links courses, introduced this year as part of the Zaytuna Honors Program, are offered as an extracurricular track alongside Zaytuna s undergraduate program.. The classes ask students to study and memorize seminal didactic poems and other materials that span across the breadth of the subject areas of the Islamic tradition.. This year, Zaytuna co-founder Zaid Shakir is teaching, with other instructors, The Forty Hadith of Imam Nawawi while Hamza Yusuf, also a co-founder, and  ...   to be here today.. Online Open House: Learn, Listen, and Ask Questions.. For anyone mildly curious about the undergraduate program at Zaytuna College -- or seriously considering enrolling -- there is a unique opportunity Tuesday to interact directly with our faculty, staff and students.. Starting at 5pm (PST), Zaytuna College co-founder Hatem Bazian will headline a group of diverse hosts representing the Zaytuna family at an Online Open House for anyone with questions, especially prospective students and their parents.. The session is ideal for students curious about the details of Zaytuna s liberal arts education and what the rhythm of life is like at a Muslim college in the United States.. Participants learn more about Zaytuna s mission and how it translates to the student experience.. The Open Houses also feature a brief overview of the admissions process, and perhaps most critically, the invaluable opportunity to interact with the Zaytuna hosts through questions and comments.. A senior member of Zaytuna s faculty, Bazian holds a Ph.. D.. from the University of California-Berkeley, where he also teaches in the Departments of Near Eastern and Ethnic Studies and where he founded the Center for the Study and Documentation of Islamophobia.. He is a leading San Francisco Bay Area human and civil rights activist, and he directs his scholarly attention on historical Palestine, the War on Terror, and Muslim emigration to Northern California.. In addition to Bazian, who will address the college s educational vision, Tuesday s Open House also features Dawood Yasin, the Director of Student Life, who will present Zaytuna s vision for a holistic student community.. Students Faatimah Knight ( 14) and Ali Kirat ( 15) are also slated to present, along with admissions officer Yusuf Samara.. Descriptive info: At ISNA, a Conversation about Zaytuna College Continues.. The main events may have transpired in vast auditoriums and lecture halls during the 50th Annual ISNA Convention in Washington, DC on Labor Day weekend.. But Zaytuna s booth, a helter-skelter of activity, became an event in itself, as it welcomed scholars and students, as well as a cross-section of the American Muslim community, to the continuing conversation the college has inspired.. The way Oxford University professor Tariq Ramadan sees it, the struggle of Muslims in the West centers on their relationship with knowledge.. Some think that if you want to [participate in] academia in the West, it means you have to forget about the traditional way we deal with our sources, he told Zaid Shakir, Zaytuna s co-founder and board chair, during an exchange at the Zaytuna booth.. On the other side, some think that if you are rooted in the traditional teaching, it means you have to avoid anything that has to do with academia, as if these were two contradictory universes of knowledge.. And we have to just say, No.. That s not the case.. And when Zareena Grewal, a Yale University professor and the keynote speaker at Zaytuna s most recent convocation ceremony, dropped by the booth, she explained to Zaytuna co-founder Hatem Bazian that she was most heartened by Zaytuna s commitment to a critical engagement with the tradition.. Criticism is integral to the tradition, she said.. [It s].. nasiha.. , the idea that scholars or students give each other advice or constructive criticism [It s] having an honest debate and debate is what gives the tradition its life.. If we aren t able to be honest with one another, then the tradition dies.. Also at the booth, Zaytuna College President Hamza Yusuf stopped by for a book-signing and addressed the large crowd gathered, explaining the importance of a liberal arts education and Zaytuna s unique effort at fusing both the Islamic and the Western traditions into its curriculum.. Zaytuna s presence was felt elsewhere at the ISNA convention as well.. The College held a panel discussion of its own on The Higher Purpose of Higher Education with Zaid Shakir and Hamza Yusuf, along with Colleen Keyes, our Vice President of Academic Affairs.. And Hamza Yusuf once again was the headline speaker on the Main Stage on Saturday night, where he told the large audience that it was his swan song as he wanted to make room for other emerging scholars and spiritual leaders.. Watch our ISNA 2013 Reel for more highlights from Zaytuna s ISNA weekend.. American Muslims Have Never Had Success at This Scale.. As Dr.. Zareena Grewal surveyed an expectant audience at the fourth Zaytuna College Convocation last month in Berkeley, her gaze settled, finally, on Zaytuna s students, assembled in the first rows of the auditorium.. I see before me, she announced authoritatively, four classes at Zaytuna College: freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors.. This is just not.. your.. milestone.. This is a milestone for American Muslims as a.. collective.. , national community.. And while that remark elicited sustained applause, Grewal, a Yale University professor delivering the ceremony s keynote address, clarified quickly that her purpose wasn t to score easy points with a friendly  ...   the human being, then what follows is immense discord.. For Yusuf, a college committed to a liberal arts education those studies that enable people to think deeply can mend a distinctly modern educational problem: universities that thrive on dizzying specialization but fall flat in inducing social cohesion.. We ve lost the sense of what the purpose of a college is, he said.. A student now goes and he s given a brochure that begins with Anthropology and ends with Zoology, and he s told to pick his way.. To Grewal, meanwhile, Zaytuna s most promising characteristic is its divergence from the ambivalence toward America that marked previous American Muslim educational initiatives.. She described Zaytuna as a counterintuitive venture, one that was launched and is succeeding during a period of hostility toward both Islam and the liberal arts.. Still, she said: Zaytuna College is not a place where American Muslims are hiding from the world in retreat.. This is a place where American Muslims are being prepared to engage in the world around them.. She ended her keynote address by turning, once again, to the students seated in the front rows.. You can t be anybody but you, she told them.. Check your intentions, discover your talent.. That s what your teachers built this Islamic liberal arts college for.. I m telling you that I want to know who you are.. We all look forward to seeing who you are going to become.. And that s what your job is to be here and to figure that out.. Watch our Convocation Reel for the highlights from the event.. Begin the Life of Learning.. Zaid Shakir.. to.. Host Online Open House.. as.. Zaytuna Opens Admissions.. Our scholars say: Matters are based upon their aims and purposes.. The purpose of what we offer here at Zaytuna -- an Islamic education rooted in the Western liberal arts tradition -- is uncommon and unprecedented.. We aim to train the minds of our students and bequeath to them the requisite tools so they may pursue a life of thought and reflection.. And to always do it with humility, purpose, and piety.. We expect our graduates to demonstrate abilities and competencies in oral and written communication, reasoning and analysis, scientific inquiry, civic engagement, and intercultural sensitivity.. These are coupled with the distinctive advantages that accompany advanced preparation in Arabic and in Islamic Law and Theology.. The community service that students perform while studying at Zaytuna, which includes organizing and leading local classes and tutoring at various venues, forecasts the advantages of this preparation.. Zaytuna College is now recruiting students for the 2014 2015 academic year.. We evaluate applications on a rolling basis and encourage students to apply early.. Zaid Shakir, co-founder and chair of the Zaytuna College Board of Trustees, will host the first of our Online Open Houses, a series of interactive online sessions designed to help students and parents learn more about education at Zaytuna.. During the September 25 session, Zaid Shakir will be joined by Dawood Yasin, the Director of Student Life, and students Sohabe Mojaddidy and Mahassin Muhsin.. Hear what they have to say and ask questions.. Register.. Wednesday, September 25, 2 pm Pacific ONLINE.. Zaid Shakir Cindy Ausec.. Sohabe Mojaddidy, Freshman Mahassin Muhsin, Senior..

Descriptive info: This Ramadan, Let s Finish What We Started.. Last year, Zaytuna College met a monumental milestone when we purchased the flagship building for our campus atop Berkeley s Holy Hill, a center for faith and higher education.. We had found ourselves a home a permanent academic address for Islam in America.. Now we need to make that home ours.. We have already moved our administrative offices there, but we need to prepare the campus for our students and faculty.. We need to craft classrooms, study lounges, a library and a serene space for worship and reflection.. For this, we need to raise $4 million for renovations.. Muslims have always ensured that beauty and learning walk hand-in-hand, says Waheed Rasheed, our Vice President for Administrations and Operations.. We want our students to experience a campus that inspires them to learn and grow and we want the American Muslim community to experience a campus that inspires them about the future of their faith in this country.. This Ramadan, you can help us finish what we started.. Last year, we unveiled our Brick by Brick campaign to raise money for the new campus.. Many of you came through, dedicating bricks in your name and the names of your loved ones for each gift of $1,000.. This builders wall, once displayed at Zaytuna, will be an enduring testament to the pioneers who made our vision a reality.. You can still be one of them.. Join our.. Brick by Brick.. campaign this Ramadan.. Scholar Studying American Islam s Crisis of Authority.. Headline Zaytuna Convocation.. Dr.. Zareena Grewal, an emerging Muslim scholar who teaches at Yale University, has been named to deliver the keynote remarks at the 2013 Convocation (Aug.. 27), where we welcome our newest freshman class.. This year will mark the first time that all four cohorts freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors will be represented at the Zaytuna Convocation.. Currently, Dr.. Grewal is completing a major work,.. Islam is a Foreign Country.. , about American Islam s crisis of authority.. In the book, she follows the journeys of American Muslim youth who travel in global, underground Islamic networks to seek a religious home.. Her publisher, New York University Press, continues: By examining the tension between American Muslims ambivalence toward  ...   the director of the eight-week Summer Arabic Intensive, these past seven weeks have been a revelation.. I have some students who basically had no idea what Arabic even looked like, whether it starts from right to left or left to right, he says.. But now, we have many of them being able to read, write, and speak not at the highest level, but they can communicate.. This Friday, Aug.. 2, the Arabic Intensive will hold a graduation ceremony for the 57 students who completed the summer program.. Zaytuna has held the program each summer for the past six years, and this year s program has been the largest to date.. It ll also be Dr.. Elhin s first graduation with Zaytuna, and he s looking forward to it.. He studied Arabic and Islamic Studies in Jordan and, after stops in New York and Montana, arrived at Zaytuna this June.. Zaytuna, he says, gives you freedom if you want to learn the language.. You have it in the very beautiful conditions for these students to study here.. Under his leadership, meanwhile, the program has already made subtle changes everything from reducing extracurricular activities to adjusting for a more Ramadan-friendly schedule that have significantly improved the learning experience.. To succeed in seven or eight weeks, says Elhin, students should have nothing to do except Arabic this summer.. We limit all other things, except for studying.. That s why if you leave everything to spend eight weeks to focus on the language, even your dreams should be in Arabic.. Spread the Word: Zaytuna Seeks Controller.. As Zaytuna College continues to grow by leaps and bounds, its operational and administrative needs are also growing.. Now, we have an immediate opening for a Controller to oversee our accounting and finance functions.. We ask you to spread the word to anyone who may be interested in applying.. The Controller reports to the VP of Administration and Operations and is responsible for the overall management of accounting functions and the provision of financial data and guidance to the Zaytuna Operations, including the monthly closing process and production of actual financial results, cash flow management and reporting, purchase order control, budgets, cash management, and other processes and internal controls.. Descriptive info: MEET COLLEEN KEYES.. Our New Vice-President for Academic and Student Affairs.. Dear Zaytuna College Community:.. Greetings of peace and the blessing of Allah to all of you!.. Eager to share the knowledge and experience Allah has allowed me to gain over decades at colleges and universities both here and abroad, I am delighted to join the dedicated staff and faculty at Zaytuna College.. My career has included faculty positions at Yale University s English Language Institute, at the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, and at Tunxis Community College, where I also taught Spanish and World Religions.. It was there that I learned college administration as Dean of Academic Affairs for nine years.. Every day I come to Zaytuna with the Prophet s words etched in my heart and mind:.. If anyone travels on a road in search of knowledge, Allah will cause him to travel on one of the roads of Paradise.. Zaytuna College is blazing a historic trail.. As such, our success will, insha Allah, inspire other Muslim institutions such as hospitals and think tanks.. We can be that beacon of light for the broader Muslim community.. With the consistent support of Muslims, Zaytuna is going through a growth spurt.. In addition to acquiring the new campus in Berkeley, we have recently been joined by Dr.. Fadi Elhin from Montana to teach Arabic and serve as director of the Summer Arabic Intensive, and Faraz Khan from Texas has come aboard to teach Logic in the Qur an and Islamic Tradition, and to develop the Honors Program.. Mark Delp from the Graduate Theological Union will soon join us to teach courses on logic and philosophy.. Under my direction, a re-organization of the Office of Academic and Student Affairs has been underway to improve our effectiveness and support growth.. Dawood Yasin from Dartmouth College will soon join us as Director of Student Life and be here to welcome our fourth cohort of students this fall.. We will graduate our first class of scholars in Spring 2014 insha Allah.. I am grateful to have been called to this inspired and inspiring project of positive growth.. May Allah make it possible for us to be the very best we can be.. Colleen Keyes.. Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.. THE 2013 SUMMER ARABIC INTENSIVE:.. Take advantage of everything we offer you.. None other than the late, great American poet Robert Frost welcomed students from around the country to Zaytuna s sixth Summer Arabic Intensive, the annual residential language program.. It wasn t, naturally, the poet resurrected but, rather, his timeless wisdom, distilled through Zaytuna co-founder Zaid Shakir s commentary during a first-week session on The Road Not Taken, in which he reminded the students that the path they chose for the summer to surrender themselves to the Arabic language deserved its full right.. Contemplating the possibilities embedded in any alternative path, he added, would only serve as an unnecessary distraction away from Frost s realization that the path taken has made all the difference.. Indeed, the Summer 2013 program will demand the full attention of its student body, which, at 58 students, is the largest to date.. Take advantage of everything we have to offer you, Dr.. Fadi Elhin, the incoming program director for the Arabic Intensive, advised the students in an introductory letter last week.. Take part  ...   benefits both the giver and the receiver.. At Zaytuna, we want to remind our friends and supporters that we use.. donations only for students in need.. This is part of our effort to ensure that the.. funds we have been entrusted with are spent in the most judicious and least controversial manner.. Hence, we do not spend.. for the acquisition, renovation or maintenance of our physical infrastructure.. Furthermore, only those students who fall into the categories of destitute, indigent and debtors (tuition, housing and related costs are considered debts that the student may owe to the College) receive.. funds that are given to the College to dispense.. Prophet Muḥammad, upon him be peace, is reported to have said that people have a right to receive charity from wealthy individuals beyond mere.. Such supererogatory acts of charity fall under the umbrella of.. sadaqah.. And at Zaytuna, we use.. donations to help grow the college; we use the funds for our endowment, for renovations of our new campus, and for funding our educational and operational needs.. We will soon be launching our Ramadan campaign to seek your financial support, insha Allah.. VIDEOS: RECLAIMING OUR FAITH.. On May 25th, Zaytuna College hosted a day-long conference and an evening fundraising event in Anaheim, California, titled Reclaiming Our Faith: Negotiating Modern Theological Fault Lines.. A capacity crowd heard Zaytuna College scholars, as well as visiting scholars, address a series of topics relevant to Muslims in the West.. The videos we are posting include talks by Zaytuna scholars, including Hamza Yusuf, Mahan Mirza, and Faraz Khan, as well as talks by our guest speakers, including Tamara Gray, Jonathan Brown and Sherman Jackson.. For those who were unable to attend the event, we re delighted to post the videos of the talks.. For those who attended the event, you may want to share these videos with friends and family who were unable to attend.. ISLAMOPHOBIA IN EUROPE.. Hatem Bazian Helps Launch Major International Conference.. Islamophobia is a pervasive form of racism and discrimination, not just in the United States, but in the rest of the West, especially in France and other European countries.. That is why the Islamophobia Research and Documentation Project (IRDP), a research unit founded by Zaytuna College co-founder Dr.. Hatem Bazian at the University of California-Berkeley, is hosting an international conference on Islamophobia to be held in Paris, France, on December 13-14, 2013.. In Western Europe, Islamophobia is on the rise, says a statement released by the sponsoring groups.. France is among the countries where Islamophobia acquires complex and multi-layered dimensions.. The time is right for an international conference in Paris, France, to examine the problematic Islamophobic discourses in France and Western Europe and the curtailment of Muslim legal status as religious, ethnic and racial minorities.. The IRDP, along with Paris-based co-sponsor Centre d Analyse et d Intervention Sociologiques (CADIS), issued a call for papers in anticipation of the conference, titled The Epistemic, Racial, Cultural and Structural Exclusionary Measures in France and Europe.. The call for papers is open to specialists, academics, and activists researching issues related to Islamophobia in France and Western Europe.. Those interested in responding should send a title, a 300-word abstract, and a one paragraph biography by September 2, 2013, to Dr.. Hatem Bazian hatemb@berkeley.. edu no later than September 2, 2013.. To learn more, visit:.. http://crg.. berkeley.. edu/content/islamophobia..
