  • Title: Family Treasure - Myths and Legends
Descriptive info: BEST CROATIAN MYTHS AND LEGENDS.. CRO-A-TIA.. Did you know that the cravat originates from the Croats?.. Wise history books bear testimony to the fact that a small European nation has conquered more of the world than Batu-Khan and the Ancient Romans.. As early as the mid-17th century, this nation began its silent conquest without hatred or weapons, stretching from its native soil between the Panonian valley and the Adriatic Sea to numerous spots of the known world.. The traces of this conquest can still be seen everywhere.. People from all over the world wear symbol of this proud nation.. They wear it near he heart, between the shirt and the coat.. It embraces them around the neck like a cherished friend.. During the European Thirty Years War (1618 – 1648), the Croatian legendary light cavalry reached all the way to Paris.. It is interesting that the Croats, as part of their traditional national costume, tied lively colored scarves around their neck in their own special manner.. In time of Louis XIV, this beautiful Croatian style impressed the fastidious Parisiens so much that they adopted this new fashion item worn „ à la manière croate“ (in the Croatian way).. This is the story of Cravat's entrance into the fashion of that time, the story of Europe and the whole civilized world conquered by cravat as symbol of culture and prestige.. Legend of Marco Polo.. Marco Polo, famous world traveler and Venetian merchant, became well known because of the record of his journey through China.. One of the most famous legends of Korčula is certainly the one that locates his origin to Korčula.. In 1295 Marco Polo returned from his legendary journey to the Far East, which lasted for 17 years, where he met most famous rulers, their peoples and numerous customs.. Legend of Croatian coat of arms.. The legend of the origin of Croatian coat of arms has been linked to King Stephen Držislav.. Legend said that King Držislav fought a lot against the Venetians who wanted to conquer Croatia's Adriatic coast.. And in such a war, the King fell into Venetian slavery and was thrown into prison in Venice.. After a while Venetian Doge Peter II Orseolo was told that king Držislav played chess very well.. So he sent him the challenge: if the King won three games of chess, he would be released and could return to his country.. King Držislav accepted the challenge and won all three games against the Doge, who kept his word and the King returned home.. Then, to the memory of that moment, grateful Držislav took a chessboard as his own emblem and the coat of arms of his people, which has remained until today..  ...   In fact, she must have been a very charming maiden as the ban addressed her so nicely and tenderly: "Manda, sweetheart, scoop up some.. “.. Croatian soldiers.. In the world Croats had long been known just for their military skills while historical difficulties led them to numerous wars, where they would fight for their masters or strangers, or would willingly march in the service of those who were willing to pay.. One of the earliest episodes in Croatian history, mentioned by Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus in the 10th century, stated that the Croats, after their Christianization, had promised the Pope never to break into someone else's country nor make war there, but rather live in peace with those of good will.. During the Seven Years' War (1756 - 1763) Croatian troops almost won Berlin in 1757, and, as a trophy, managed to seize several Prussian war flags and a chess that belonged to King Frederick the Great.. In 1941 Ante Pavelić gave the chess and the flag back to Adolf Hitler, who was not too thrilled to be reminded so of the Croatian victory and German defeat.. In the early 19th century Croatian soldiers stood out in the campaign in Russia, when Napoleon said that if he had had 100,000 Croats, he would have conquered the whole world.. Under Ban Josip Jelačić in 1848 Croatian troops were involved in the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution, whose leaders refused to recognize Croatia's right to exist.. During World War I Croatian soldiers fought on the Austro-Hungarian side in Serbia, Galicia and the battlefield of Sochi, where they offered fierce resistance to the Italian army, whose goal was to occupy Istria and Dalmatia.. Svetozar Borojević, the battlefield commander, was credited as the only Croat who earned the rank of Field Marshal.. Many Croats went to Spain in the Civil War (1936-1939) as volunteers on the Republican side.. Some of them later fought in the French Resistance, such as Ljubo Ilić, who in 1943 became the commander of all units composed of foreigners.. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, the Croats were forced dying for Hitler's interests on the Russian front.. German officers praised the bravery of the Croats particularly in the Battle of Stalingrad, but out of 5000 Croatians there only few have returned home.. After 1945 some Croats joined the French Foreign Legion and fought as mercenaries all around the world.. Among them Ante Gotovina is the most famous one.. As well as several other former legionnaires he returned to Croatia and joined the Homeland war in 1991.. Croatian soldiers are still present on the world's battlefields.. As a part of the UN and NATO peacekeeping forces they are receiving praise for their professionalism..

  • Title: Family Treasure - CROATIAN COAT OF ARMS
Descriptive info: Republic of Croatia's emblem is its historical coat of arms imbeded on the Croatian flag.. It is shield-shaped while its checkered pattern has twenty five red and white fields, so that the first field in the upper left corner is red.. Above the main shield there is a crown with five smaller shields listed here in order from the left:.. The oldest known Croatian coat of arms.. Hrvatske.. - contains six-pointed golden star and a white moon on the blue field.. Coat of Arms of the Republic of Dubrovnik.. – contains the shield on a blue field with two red stripes.. Dalmatian coat of arms.. - contains three yellow (gold) crowned leopard's heads on a blue shield.. Istrian coat of arms.. – contains a yellow (gold) goat facing left with red hooves and horns inside the shield on a blue field.. Slavonian coat of arms.. - contains the shield on a blue field with two horizontal white (silver) stripes.. Between the stripes there is a red field with a left walking marten.. Inside the top blue field there is a yellow (gold) six-pointed star.. The entire herald is surrounded by a red ribbon.. The earliest known use of the checkered shield was dated to the time of King Krešimir IV (1056 - 1073) who donated a baptistery to the Archbishop of Split.. Four falcons with checkered emblem on their wings were painted on it.. But officially, Croatian coat of arms was firstly displayed in the genealogy of the Habsburgs in 1508 and 1512.. It is believed that it occurs even earlier.. It also appeared on a memorial thaler from 1525, as well as on a seal on the Cetingrad charter that confirmed the election of Emperor Ferdinand I as king of Croatia at the Parliament on Cetin on January 1st 1527.. Although the classical form of the emblem is a checkerboard usually ranged 5x5 squares, throughout history there have been numerous variations.. An example has been the Charter of the Croatian Parliament from January 1st 1527 with the coat of arms in which the shield counted 64 squares.. The most known to Croats  ...   incorporated into the state as well as his personal emblem.. The Serbian king imbeded the Croatian coat of arms into the Serbian eagle and such a state symbol was used until the end of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.. Even in exile the so called Serbian Kingdom will continue to use the Croatian coat of arms as part of the royal signet.. After years of struggle for greater autonomy, in 1939 Croatia became semi-autonomous province (Banovina of Croatia).. Banovina kept the emblem with the first red field, and above the checkerboard a royal crown was added.. During World War II Ustashi regime replaced the first red field with a white and a royal crown with a symbol of Ustashi, a capital U.. After a partisan victory in 1945 the national emblem was included into new socialist coat of arms with Soviet symbols - shield of ears of wheat and a red star on the top.. In the heart of the shield there was a chekerboard with 25 squares again, but with the red field first.. As a matter of fact communists primarily demanded the first-field-red and only red.. It used to be a crime to display the first field white variant then.. Either by mistake or on purpose, the last SFRY Constitution of 1974 adopted Croatian emblem with the white field first!.. In May 1990 when democracy won out, thousands of red, white and blue flags with ancient Croatian emblem were taken out of secret hiding places to replace red star of communism.. New Croatian government has retained traditional Croatian checkerboard with the first red square and a crown of five shields at the top to symbolize five historical regions in Croatia.. Croatian flag and its coat of arms were also carried in battles against the Turks.. A Croatian - American gunner in World War I fought under the same victorious symbols as were proudly waved all over Croatia in 1990.. Croatian flag and its checkered emblem are older than numerous European countries, being also used at the time when Christopher Columbus set his sails towards India and on his way accidentally discovered America..

  • Title: Family Treasure - GLAGOLITIC SCRIPT
Descriptive info: The Glagolitic script was Old Slavic alphabet created in the 9th century (about 863 AD).. It was retained in some Croatian regions until 19th century but was increasingly being replaced by Latin since the early 16th century.. Glagolitc letters occured in two forms: round or Bulgarian and angular or Croatian.. Cyrill and Methodius have mostly been mentioned as Glagolitic authors who were using this script in translating sacred books into the Old Slavic language.. The oldest preserved Glagolitic monuments came from the 11th century.. The first book printed in this script was Missal by the Roman court law dated on 22nd February 1483.. The Missal was our first book, the first one in Europe that was not printed in the Latin alphabeth nor in the Latin language.. Although the oldest inscriptions in the land of Croats had been in Latin, words of their own language were first recorded in the Glagolitic script.. Glagolitic superiority over Latin alphabeth lasted for 500 years, with the golden age of Glagolitism during 14th and 15th century, when numerous books (liturgical mostly) were being transcribed into Glagolitic script.. Even though letters had been moderately rounded on the most famous Croatian Glagolitic monument, the Baška Tablet, yet angular form of the script was particularly Croatian.. It was being shaped in Croatia from the12th century on, becoming mostly common in its coastal area (Istria, Croatian Coast, Dalmatia, Zadar and Kvarner islands, primarily Krk, Cres and Lošinj), but found also in the interior of Lika and Krbava up to Kupa, even in Međimurje and Slovene regions.. Angular way of Glagolitic writing flourished among the Croats in the 14th and 15th century.. Numerous and most beautiful Glagolitic  ...   gift from King Zvonimir to the church of St Lucija.. Among other things, the text listed witnesses at the gift presentation, as well as the year of donation.. The stone slab itself reportedly dated from the year 1100.. In 1934 this historic relic was taken to be safely kept at the Academy of Arts and Science in Zagreb.. A convincing replica was erected in its original place in the church of St Lucija in Jurandvor.. The church and the monastery complex, restored partially, are attracting a large number of visitors today.. The Senj Tablet.. Senj is, among others, known as the Glagolitic town.. Found in reconstruction efforts in the staircase of the fortress of Nehaj, the Senj Tablet proved that Glagolitic alphabet had already been developed there in the 11th century, similarly to the neighbouring island of Krk.. As one of the oldest Croatian Glagolitic monuments it appeared almost simultaneously with the Baška Tablet.. The Senj Tablet has been preserved only in fragments that were engraved with floral designs and glagolitic characters.. Those fragments are now housed in the City Museum of Senj.. For a long period after the Senj Tablet there was no trace of Glagolitic lettering.. But in 1248 Pope Innocent wrote to Bishop Philip of Senj, granting him permision to glorify the God in the old Slavic language using Glagolitic script in liturgy.. It was the first time ever that permission to use a vernacular national language had been formally given to a bishop.. This significant letter had laid foundations for flourishing of the Croatian Glagolitic culture in the 14th and 15th century.. Now it has been kept in the Secret Archives of the Vatican..
